DESCRIPTION

The objective of Local401 is to develop and test human centered product design strategies in local communities. The process focuses on developing partnerships and participating in engaged research, where it is crucial to meet, work with, and learn from, local overlooked communities. The solutions utilize a variety of local material scrap, and manufacturing cut-off, creating an affordable and sustainable product. Production jobs and job training will be made available to homeless individuals in the community. Local 401 aims to connect local communities with local resources to develop local solutions.

2009calendarStreet Sights serves as a forum for advocates, homeless and formally homeless individuals, students, state officials, and the general public to share accurate and honest information about issues relating to homelessness. Our goal is to shed light on a subject not often addressed, and to some degree ignored. We aim to provoke discussion and give a voice to the voiceless in our com-munity. We provide a space free of judgment, in which we recog-nize the dignity and worth of each person and in doing so empower the group as a whole. The purpose of selling the calendar is to raise needed funds to keep Street Sights operational, and to provide better service to those in need by keeping the doorway of communication open to the society as a whole.

Today I StandBy Naomi Caniff

I sit back and rememberWhat it‛s like to be withoutI‛ve walked in shadowI was secure in my doubtNever would I walk away from the painNever had I imagined a life lived without bondage & chainsUntil the day I fell upon my kneesSurrendering was all I had left in meI‛m no longer the lost woman standing on the streetI‛m no longer the one who is abused & beatI rise up from the ashes of my defeatToday I stand with my back stood tallToday I stand in yesterday‛s fallI‛m no longer the daughter who is missingI‛m no longer the one, who gives it all upwith some winking & kissing…Today I stand freedWhere once I was bound To the lies I believed Today I stand in my past mistakesToday I stand because I‛m willing to do whatever it takes Today I live… …TODAY I STAND

“I‛ve been writing poetry since I was a child as a way to express myself without any barriers or boundaries. I find it a way of re-leasing my ‘true self.‛ I enjoy the Arts, theater, singing and paint-ing. I feel privileged to be a part of something bigger than myself.”

HPAC is the Homeless Peoples Action Committee. They are a group of homeless individuals who organize out-reach and provide services to other homeless individuals, headed by Jonh Joyce. I met John early in the process and he has been one of my main advisors for the project. Currently HPAC runs a sit down meal site on Tuesdays and an overnight shelter every night temperatures drop below 40. HPAC works directly with HOPE a Brown student group.

-Not having an id is the only factor that would deny you acess to Cross-roads Shelter. If the beds are full you sleep on the floor.

-After 911 it is against the law for shelters to provide lockable storage.

-You Have to be out by 9 am and checked back in by 5 pm.

-You have to carry your possessions with you throughout the day.

-Many choose not to stay at the shelters because it is “degrading”

-If it’s raining you and the contents of your packs will get wet.

-Between 5 different meal sites in Providence you can eat three meals a day most days of the week.
