Sound: Sound of her heels when she is walking but with quiet background music of dramatic, sinister music then silence when she stops on the stairs.

Content: Bridge over is used with the sound effect of a door knock, as you can hear the sound of it in shot 9 and then in shot 10 we see the character opening the door, which suggests that the film may start to get thrilling fairly quickly. Also, we see ‘LAMBERT RESIDENCE, 1986’ this suggests that this is an important date and location.

Page 3: Insidious 2

Shot – 10

Camera Shot: Mid shot

Sound: Sound of a door knock then the first character we had seen introduces herself as ‘Elise’ then the other character in the house speaks to her about her son.

Content: The fact that we haven’t seen the first characters face yet may suggest that they want the audience to be shocked by who the character is and also we only hear her name being mentioned so this also suggests that she is an important character.

Mise en scene – During the first two minutes, the lighting is very low key which suggests darkness throughout the plot of the film. The characters costume does not influence the idea of horror due to how normal it is, although, the fact that it is everyday clothing may instead influence the idea that this could happen to a person with a normal life. The setting of the film is in a characters house, which may make the audience feel uneasy because these events are happening in the comfort of this character s home. Her facial expression really shows how serious the situation is and that the next scenes may be disturbing or just simply not very happy and even though we do not see ‘Elise’s’ facial expression we know that the situation is bad and she wants the it fixed. The female character in the house has a natural look, with her makeup being very light and her hair not looking styled, this connotes that they want her to be shown as stressed, anxious and overall distressed.

Sound – The sound is mixed between it being loud at the beginning up until 56 seconds then suddenly stops to become quieter but still loud in the sense of what sound affect it being played. When the music suddenly stops it may make the audience feel unknown on what is going to happen next which again builds up tension and an uneasy feeling is created again. The high pitched, disturbed sound that is played whilst some of the credits are being shown sounds very sinister and may make the audience feel in trepidation because of the altered swing saw like sound. We do not hear dialogue from the characters until 1:52 minutes and from that we know the name of the first character shown, which is ‘Elise’ but we do not learn the name of the other female character which obviously shows how important ‘Elise’ is and the audience may need to know her name for the storyline to be familiar. It starts off with very eerie, spooky music which is non diegetic.

Editing – During the institutions/productions the editing is mostly fixed on fading, at the end of the first institution the shot fades away and which then the screen turns black then white clouds fade out from the black and turn into the background of the next institution. After the second institution is shown, it again, fades away and then the screen turns black for the next institution to be played, but then for the last institution the shot comes from the bottom of the screen then up. The last institution shown then fades the same way the others did and the black screen is turned into a background for some of the credit s to role. Once the credits have been shown the shot fades, again, into the first scene of the movie then bridge over is used (door knock when she is standing on the stairs) then jump cuts to her standing outside the door.

Camera Shots – The camera shots are varied during the first two minutes, the first shots being wide, this is up until 45 seconds, from then on the shots become more varied. A mid shot of a chair moving around in the air is used, as well as a long shot of the room (which could also relate to wide shot, as the shot is wide) then another mid shot of a little girl and then finally a wide shot showing the name of the final production. After the productions, the wide shots continue up until ‘Shot-9’ then a long shot is introduced. The camera shots used are most effective because we can see what needs to be seen, like the productions and the credits, also in the first two minutes we are known of a location, a date and a characters name.

Representation: I believe that gender is not really represented during the first two minutes of this film, due to the fact that we do not meet many of the characters, to be exact: two female characters. I could point out that the females hair is down and she looks very distressed, as do most females in a horror film. She may be a single mother, due to the idea of her answering the door alone ,also in her dialogue she states she has a day job but raising her son is a ‘night job’ this supports the idea that in most horror films the female characters have to deal with most things on by themselves. Mothers that are represented in most horror films are shown as scared, unsure on what to do, in need of help by someone else, whereas most Father Characters are shown as the brave, uncowardly and knowledgeable people in certain situations. A perfect example would be in this film as the father is brave whereas the mother is in need of help.

Genre: The genre is horror, but I believe we are not aware of this during the first two minutes; there are no real clues into making us believe that this film is in fact a horror. The only clue that I could find was the uneasy, disturbing sound we hear during the credits being shown before the film has opened with its first scene. The dark colours used may also help support the audience to believe that the genre is horror. One of the productions ‘BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS’ gives a very uneasy feeling due to the heavy (worried) breathing that is used as the background sound which is also combined with the heart pounding sound, as the sounds get more frequent so does the audiences anxiety. We then see a sinister looking little girl who looks almost evil, with her dark, scrawny looking hair which clashes with her pure white dress, so this adds to the uneasy feeling that is already in the audience’s thoughts.

Stereotypes/ Ideology: The stereotypes of woman are clearly shown throughout the first two minutes of this film. The facts that the woman or mother is in need of desperate help is telling the audience that a single mother cannot cope with this kind of situation on her own. Also the fact that she is a female in a horror film highlights the stereotype that she as the woman is in desperate need of help and she is seen as vulnerable due to her desperate need to help her son overcome what is happening to him.

Theories and theorists: Theorist Stephen Prince states that “like other genre movies, any given horror film will convey synchronic association, ideological, and social messages that are a part of a certain period or historical moment. One can analyse films in terms of these periods or moments, much like they can do with gangster movies. But unlike this genre, horror also goes deeper, to explore more fundamental questions about the nature of human existence, and other questions that, in some profound ways, go beyond culture and society as these are organized in any given form or period.” From this, we understand that Prince feels that the horror genre is an elite genre within the field of film, as it is the most realistic, and some of concepts and ideas placed into films in the genre are relative to ‘real life’.

Stage 6 Films is a label created by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions in fall 2007 that acquires, produces and

distributes 10–15 low budget (capped at approximately $10 million) films and direct-to-DVD releases per year. It is Columbia TriStar's fifth specialty label. Overall, it is the

seventh theatrical label by Sony Pictures. The label takes its name from the location of its main office, the Stage 6

building at Sony Pictures Studios (originally an actual sound stage used for such films as The Wizard of Oz).[1][2] Adrian Alperovich, Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions

Group, said Stage 6's slate will mostly be geared toward ancillary markets, but the label will also release some of the titles theatrically through Sony's distribution labels (mostly TriStar Pictures) and other companies like Samuel Goldwyn

Films and FilmDistrict. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will determine whether a Stage 6 title bows

theatrically after the film has been made.
