Girsberger zu besuch in Hamburg

Für die Präsen ta tion der neuheiten hat sich Girsbergerdieses Jahr nach Hamburg begeben. Dafür sprachen eine ganze reihe von Gründen: Die HafenCity in Ham-burg ist derzeit die grösste baustelle europas und damit ein überaus spannendes umfeld. und die an die Hafen City angrenzende speicherstadt wurde gerade 120 Jahre alt ― genau wie Girsberger. Darüber hinaus hat Girsberger hier, in der speicherstadt, vor kurzem auch seinen neuen showroom bezogen. Wir beugen uns diesen Koinzidenzen und wählten mit Freude die HafenCity und die speicherstadt als foto gra fisches umfeld für unsere neuheiten. Heraus gekommen ist dieses booklet, in dem es nicht nur um unsere sitzmöbel, sondern auch um das neue Hamburg geht. und weil die Gelegenheit günstig ist, informieren wir sie gleich auch über aktuelle entwicklungen bei Girsberger: über die neuen showrooms, über unsere neuen Geschäftsbereiche, über aussergewöhnliche referenzprojekte ― und, im Gespräch mit CeO michael Girsberger, über unternehmerische Verantwortung.

Girsberger visits Hamburg

This year, Girsberger went to Hamburg in order to pres - ent its new products. The reasons were manifold: HafenCity in Hamburg is currently the largest building site in europe and accordingly offers extremely ex-citing surroundings. in addition, HafenCity’s immediate neighbour, the warehouse district speicherstadt, has just turned 120 years old ― exactly like Girsberger. moreover, speicherstadt is where Girsberger recently opened a new showroom. We bowed to these coin-cidences and happily chose HafenCity and speicher-stadt as photographic settings for our new products. The result is this booklet, which features not only our seating but also the ‘new’ Hamburg.because it is such a good opportunity, we are including information on the latest developments at Girsberger: our new showrooms, our new business sectors, and our most exceptional reference projects, along with a recent interview with CeO michael Girsberger on corporate responsibility. We hope you will enjoy your-selves.

Hamburg wendet sich der elbe zuaus dem alten Hamburger Hafenquartier, dessen ur-sprünge in die mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zurück -reichen, ist ein stück stadt entstanden, das es vor zehn Jahren noch nicht gab: die HafenCity. Deren Wahrzei-chen ist die elbphil harmo nie von Herzog & de meuron. im rücken des neuen Konzerthauses sind wie Perlen an einer schnur die neubauten entlang dem Kaiserkai aufge reiht. sie stammen von Vertretern der deut-schen architektur szene und von inter nationalen archi-tekten, neben Herzog & de meuron auch rem Koolhaas’ Oma, richard meier, David Chipperfield, massimiliano Fuksas und andere.

nicht jeder neubau am Kaiserkai ist ein edel- stein. Gemeinsam bilden sie jedoch ein städtisches Gefüge ― im rücken die strasse, nach vorne das becken des sandtor- oder des Grasbrookhafens. am sandtorkai hingegen stehen auf der einen strassenseite keine neubauten, sondern historische speicherhäu-ser; imposante backsteinburgen aus der Gründerzeit. ein nur wenig befensterter sockel begleitet die strasse auf der neubauseite; die wenigen Öffnungen lassen sich hermetisch verschliessen. etwa zweimal pro Winterhalb- jahr droht sturmflut, weshalb man in den neu- bauquartieren der hafenCity das erdgeschoss-niveau um ein Geschoss angehoben hat. Gegen die hafenbecken blieb das ursprüngliche niveau erhalten. hier führen öffentliche Fuss- gängerpassagen dem Wasser entlang, die magellan-terrassen und die marco-Polo-terras-sen verbinden oben und unten, brücken er- schliessen schwimmende Pontons.

spannendes Planungskonzeptdie anfänge der hafenCity liegen bald zwan- zig Jahre zurück. 1991 liess bürgermeister henning Voscherau die umwandlung des inner- städtischen hafenrands überprüfen. architekt Volkwin marg legte eine erste städtebauliche studie vor, die 1997 als „Vision hafenCity“ vorgestellt wurde. Gleichzeitig gründete die stadt das „sondervermögen stadt und hafen“, in das sie ihre Grundstücke einbrachte. das niederländisch-deutsche team „hamburgplan“ mit Kees Christiaanse und astoC gewann 1999 den städtebaulichen Ideenwettbewerb. daraus entstand der masterplan, den der hamburger senat im Februar 2000 verabschie-dete. Für die entwicklung des Gebiets grün- dete die stadt die hafenCity hamburg Gmbh. die realisierung der hafenCity erfolgt nicht per Verkauf an den meistbietenden, sondern über ein „anhandgabeverfahren“. einem Inves- tor wird das Grundstück zunächst nicht ver- kauft, sondern „anhand“ gegeben, um einen

architekturwettbewerb durchzuführen, die baukosten zu ermitteln und die Genehmigung zu beantragen. erst dann besiegeln bauherr und hafenCity den Kauf. Kommt ein Investor seinen Verpflichtungen nicht nach, kann ihm das Grundstück wieder entzogen werden. die stadt kann so die Qualität sichern, und ein Investor muss den Kaufpreis für das Grund- stück erst dann entrichten, wenn er ein baufertiges Projekt hat.

das Quartier wächstZurzeit ist rund die hälfte des im masterplan vorgesehenen bauvolumens realisiert, im bau oder gesichert. 1 500 menschen leben in der hafenCity, 6 000 arbeiten hier. Gemäss Plan wächst der stadtteil von nordwesten nach südosten. In dieser entwicklungsrichtung wach- sen auch die dimensionen der Quartiere, deren Grundflächen und Gebäude grösser werden. der osten der hafenCity ist noch weit- gehend Planungsgebiet. die u-bahn linie u4 wird ab 2012 die hafenCity mit der Innenstadt und dem hauptbahnhof verbinden. bis 2020 oder 2025 erstreckt sich der ent- wicklungszeitraum für die hafenCity. Flankiert von brachen steht, wie ein Vorposten der künftigen elbfront, das Verwaltungsgebäude von unilever am strandkai. stephan behnisch hat ein bürogebäude entworfen, dessen In- nenhof als öffentliche Passage direkt ans ufer der norderelbe führt. hier wendet sich die hamburger Innenstadt wieder ihrem Fluss zu ― so wie früher, bevor sich die hansestadt von der elbe ab- und der alster zuwandte.

Hamburg turns towards the river elbeThe old docks of Hamburg, dating back to the mid -19th

century, have reemerged over the past ten years as an inspiring new part of the town: the HafenCity (har-bour city). its landmark is the elbphilharmonie concert hall which was designed by the architects Herzog & de meuron. behind this new structure, new buildings line the quay called Kaiserkai like pearls on a string. They were created by representatives of the German architectural scene and, alongside Herzog & de meuron, by international architects such as rem Koolhaasʼ Oma, richard meier, David Chipperfield and massimiliano Fuksas.

not every new building on the Kaiserkai can be called a jewel. but together they form an urban structure ― with the road behind them and the basins of the sandtor or Grasbrook har- bours in front of them. at the sandtor quay, however, one side of the road is not lined by new buildings, but by historic warehouses, impressive brick buildings dating back to the Wilhelminian period. the new buildings on the other side stand on a sparsely windowed plinth; its few apertures can be sealed her- metically. the threat of storm floods looms about twice every winter, which is why the ground floors of the new buildings in the hafen-City have been raised by one storey. on the side of the harbour basins, the original level was kept. here, public pedestrian passages lead alongside the water. the magellan and the marco-Polo terraces connect the levels with each other, and bridges provide access to float- ing pontoons.

an exciting planning conceptthe beginnings of the hafenCity date back almost twenty years. In 1991, the mayor of the town, henning Voscherau, commissioned a survey on the transformation of the inner-city harbour fringe. the architect Volkwin marg submitted an initial urban development study which was presented to the public in 1997 as “Vision hafenCity”. at the same time, the town set up a special fund, the “sonderver- mögen stadt und hafen,” into which it placed its real estate assets. In 1999, the dutch-Ger-man team “hamburgplan” with Kees Christiaan- se and astoC won the urban development ideas competition. this provided the basis for the master plan which was passed by the senate of hamburg in February 2000. the development of the district was given to hafen- City hamburg Gmbh, especially incorporated by the town for the said purpose. the construction of the hafenCity is not based on the sale of land to the highest bidder, but

follows a so-called “handing over procedure” instead. to begin with, the building plot is not sold to the investor. It is “handed over,” so that he can organize an architectural competition, calculate the building costs and apply for building permission. only then do the investor and hafenCity finalize the sale. If an investor does not meet his obligations, then the plot of land can be taken away from him again. the town is thus able to ensure the quality of the project, and the investor must not pay for the land before he has a project which is ready to be built.

the district growsCurrently, about half of the overall building vol- ume provided for in the master plan has either been completed, is under construction or has been spoken for. 1 500 people live in the hafenCity, and 6 000 work there. the district grows from north-west to south-east, as planned. and the individual sections of the district also expand in the same direction, gaining in territory and acquiring larger buildings. the east of the hafenCity is, to a large extent, still being planned. as of 2012, the underground railway line u4 will connect the hafenCity with the city center and the main railway station.the period of time needed for the hafenCity’s development will last until 2020 or 2025. Flanked by waste land, unilever’s administration building stands on the strandkai like an out- post of the future elbe waterfront. designed by stephan behnisch, the office building has an inner courtyard which acts as a public passage-way, leading directly to the banks of the norderelbe, the northern arm of the river elbe. this is where the town center of hamburg and its river meet again ― as in former times, before the hanseatic city turned its attention away from the elbe and towards the alster.

OTTO is the realization of an ideal for office com- munication areas. What makes the OTTO lounge port-folio so distinctive is its remarkable configurability. The chair’s shape and the use of coupling sets and table elements allow a great variety of seating land-scapes. One look at OTTO confirms this fact. With corners cut cleanly at 45°, the upholstered seat indi-cates the many possible combinations while it estab-lishes the essence of the chair’s appearance. similarly, the width of the OTTO seat suggests both aesthetic clarity and versatility and offers generous space for typical work equipment. There is sufficient room on either side of a seated person for briefcases, papers, and laptops. Just as easily, OTTO serves as a comfort-able two-seater. OTTO’s design is refreshingly new and friendly. at the same time, the chair represents modern classicism at its best. Frame and upholstery are clearly separat-ed, revealing the structure of the chair at a glance. The hint of a curve in the seat lets the upholstery look inviting and comfortable. The frame is reduced to the essentials, with a shape that can cope with the pres-sures it will have to bear.

OTTO ist ein Loungesessel, der sich speziell für die einrichtung kommunikativer Zonen im büro eignet. Die besonderheit von OTTO liegt in seiner vielfältigen Konfigurierbarkeit. aufgrund seiner Form und mit Hilfe von Verbindungssets und Tischablagen lassen sich die unterschiedlichsten sitzlandschaften bilden. und das sieht man OTTO an: signifikante 45°- an-schnitte des sitzpolsters weisen auf die Kombinations -möglichkeiten hin und prägen das eigenwillige er-scheinungsbild des sessels.ein weiteres merkmal von OTTO ist seine sitzbreite.als einsitzer bietet er grosszügige ablageflächen für typische arbeitsmaterialien: Taschen, unterlagen und Laptop finden links und rechts der sitzposition ausreichend Platz. bei bedarf eignet sich OTTO aber auch als Zweisitzer.Die Gestalt von OTTO wirkt erfrischend neu und freundlich. Dabei ist sie im besten sinne der klassi-schen moderne verpflichtet. Dank der strikten Trennung von Gestell und Polster lässt sich die struk-tur auf den ersten blick ablesen. Das sitzpolster wirkt aufgrund der angedeuteten schale einladend und bequem, während das Gestell minimiert und den auftretenden Kräften entsprechend gestaltet ist.

One can barely see that the aL3 adapts itself to the movements of the body. The chairʼs mechanism is integrated in its standpipe. This eliminated the need for a mechanism casing, which is usually positioned under the seat. so the aL3 has all the ergonomic func- tions of a modern swivel chair, yet the mechanics of the chair do not influence its appearance ― and a completely new kind of design just became possible.The idea for this standpipe mechanism and the design of the aL3 both came from the independent devel-oper and designer Thierry aubert. The result was an office swivel chair made of aluminium, which evokes emotions and sets itself apart from all the other products on the market. Different versions ― with fab-ric- or leather-covered upholstery, or fitted out with stretched mesh ― allow the aL3 to appear coolly exclu - sive one moment, transparently delicate the next.The aL3 synchronously adapts itself to every move-ment of the body, thanks to a comfortable triple-joint mechanism. This technique guarantees optimum support during active sitting.a conference and visitor chair complements the func-tional chair. The conference chair features a 4-prong base with glides instead of the 5-prong base with castors.

Dass sich der aL3 den Körperbewegungen anpassen kann, sieht man kaum. Die stuhl mechanik ist ins standrohr integriert. Das mechanikgehäuse, das sich bei bürodrehstühlen üblicherweise unterhalb des sitzes befindet, konnte deshalb entfallen. so ist der aL3 mit allen ergonomischen Funktionen eines moder-nen Drehstuhls ausgestattet, ohne dass die mechanik sein erscheinungsbild beeinflusst. Das hat ein völlig neues Design ermöglicht. Die idee dieser standrohrmechanik wie auch das De-sign des aL3 stammen vom selbstständig tätigen entwickler und Designer Thierry aubert. entstanden ist ein bürodrehstuhl aus aluminium, der emotionen weckt und sich von am markt erhältlichen Produkten abhebt. Verschiedene ausführungen ― mit leder- bzw. stoffbezogener Polsterung oder mit netz be span-nung ― lassen den aL3 bald edel und kühl, bald transparent und filigran erscheinen. Dank einer kom-fortablen Drei-Gelenk-mechanik passt sich der aL3 körpersynchron jeder bewegung an. Diese Technik ga- rantiert eine optimale stützung beim bewegten sitzen. ein Konferenz- und besucherstuhl ergänzt den Funk-tionsstuhl. anstelle des 5-stern-Fusses mit rollen weist der Konferenzdrehstuhl einen 4-stern-Fuss mit Gleitern auf.

YanOs ist ein vielseitiger Drehstuhl für die unter-schiedlichsten einsatzgebiete. Dank einer elastischen rücken bespannung und zahlreichen Verstellmög- lichkeiten passt er sich individuellen Körperformen optimal an. Das markante merkmal von YanOs ist die Y-struktur seiner rückenlehne. sie ermöglicht es, die Lehne in der Höhe zu verstellen und der Körpergrösse entspre-chend zu positionieren. Die elastische bespannung passt sich dabei der individuellen Form des rückens von sich aus an. ein tiefen verstell bares Lendenwirbel-kissen gewährleistet zudem eine punktgenaue ab-stützung des Lumbalbereichs. auch sitz und armleh-nen sind vielfältig und individuell einstellbar. Heute führt michael Girsberger die Firmengruppe in der vierten Generation. im Gespräch erläutert er, wie sich Girsber ger als mittelständisches schweizer unterneh-men erfolgreich im Wettbewerb behaupten kann und dabei nachdrücklich für ressourcenschonung und soziale Gerechtigkeit eintritt.

Warum sind Girsberger Produkte am markterfolgreich? Was zeichnet sie aus?

michael Girsberger: der büromöbelmarkt ist von einem intensiven Wettbewerb geprägt. es ist heute schwierig, sich über die Produkt qua lität, das design oder ergonomische Vorteile von der Konkurrenz abzuheben. unsere erfolgreichs - ten Produkte waren häufig solche mit echten alleinstellungs merkmalen. das ist ein wichtiger teil unserer Produktstrategie. ein beispiel dafür ist die neuartige mechanik des aluminium-drehstuhls al3, die unsichtbar im stand rohr integriert ist. Wie viele andere unserer entwicklungen ist sie mittlerweile patentiert.

Woher kommen die neuen Ideen? auch IhreWettbewerber denken ja nach.

michael Girsberger: als mittelständisches unternehmen in Familienbesitz haben wir den Vorteil, dass wir die gesamte Wertschöpfungs-kette von der Produktidee über den entwurf bis hin zur Produktion im eigenen haus haben. natürlich gelingt es auch uns nicht immer, Produkte zu entwerfen, die völlig neuartig sind. Wir gehen jedoch grundsätzlich anders an die sache heran als manche Wettbewerber: das Ziel, etwas neues zu entwickeln, ist teil unserer unternehmenskultur und damit auch der ehrgeiz unserer mitarbeitenden. Keine Firma kann diese denk- und Verhaltensweise von heute auf morgen einführen. hinzu kommt, dass wir uns zunächst intensiv mit den Grundlagen einer materie ausein -ander setzen, wenn wir ein neues Produkt entwickeln. so haben wir beispielsweise im Zuge der entwicklung des loungesessels otto dr. thomas schriefers gebeten, gemeinsam mit uns das thema „lounge im büro“ zu untersu-chen. daraus ist das buch loungeWelten entstanden. Wir haben also nicht einfach nur ein neues Produkt entwickelt, sondern wir wollten die hinter gründe und die besonderen anfor-

derungen genau verstehen. Ich bin überzeugt, dass auch solche Vorbereitungen notwendig sind, um auf neue Ideen zu kommen.

und worin liegt die neuartigkeit des ottoloungesessels?

michael Girsberger: die liegt in seinen vielfäl- tigen Konfigurierungsmöglichkeiten. mit otto lassen sich die unterschied lichsten sitzlandschaften bilden. das ist in dieser Kon- sequenz tatsächlich neu und für effiziente raum- planung sehr wichtig.der Wille zur neuartigkeit manifestiert sich bei uns aber nicht nur in den Produkten, sondern auch in der unternehmensausrichtung. ein beispiel: unternehmen und organisationen ver- suchen immer häufiger, ihre marke mit den mitteln der architektur und des Interior design zu vermitteln. diesen trend bedienen wir mit dem Geschäftsbereich CustomIZed solu-tIons, der sich ausschliesslich mit der reali- sation von kundenspezifisch entworfenen einrichtungen beispielsweise für besprechungs- räume, Kantinen, lounges oder empfangsbereiche beschäftigt.

die Girsberger Produktionsstandorte sindmehrheitlich dort, wo sie schon immer waren.Warum produzieren sie noch immer in hoch-lohnländern wie beispielsweise der schweizund deutschland? man muss doch davonausgehen, dass sie nicht die gleichen renditenerzielen können wie ein mitbewerber, der dortproduziert, wo es am kostengünstigsten ist.

michael Girsberger: seit der Gründung unserer Firma im Jahr 1889 ist es bei Girsberger immer auch darum gegangen, den wirtschaftlichen erfolg mit der sozialen und ökologischen Ver- antwortung im Gleichgewicht zu halten. so haben wir beispielsweise mitte der neunziger Jahre an unserem Wohnmöbelbereich festgehalten, obwohl er hoch defizitär war. Wir

wollten einfach das handwerkliche Know-how und die damit verbundenen arbeitsplätze be- wahren. das hat sich ausbezahlt: heute sind wir mit den Wohnmöbeln, insbesondere mit unseren massivholztischen, sehr erfolgreich.

Zurzeit kommt es ja auch gut an, wenn sich un-ternehmen um Corporate social responsibilitybemühen.

michael Girsberger: das stimmt, bemühungen in diesem bereich werden heute gern in die Öffentlichkeit getragen. Ich betrachte das nicht als negativ. die Konsumenten sind sich be- wusst geworden, dass die Gewährleistung von sozialer Gerechtigkeit und ressourcenscho-nung eine Veränderung unseres Wirtschaftens erfordert. das hat auch bei den unternehmen zu einem umdenken geführt, egal, ob es nun kommerziell begründet ist oder auf echter Überzeugung basiert. so oder so ist es zu be- grüssen, dass Corporate social respon sibi lity ein zunehmend wichtiges thema gewor den ist. bei Girsberger war sie schon immer zentraler teil der Firmenphilosophie. nach aussen haben wir jedoch wenig darüber gesprochen. Viel wichtiger scheint mir, dass wir an der Corporate social responsibility auch in Zukunft konse-quent festhalten.

das klingt sehr allgemein. Worin zeigt sich Ihrbemühen um verantwortungsvolles handelnkonkret, zum beispiel im bereich der umwelt-schonung?

michael Girsberger: In der seriellen Produktion sind ressourcenschonung und nachhaltiger Verbrauch von grosser bedeutung. daher werden bei uns Wasser-, energie- und material-verbrauch laufend kontrolliert und optimiert. darüber hinaus interessiert uns die gesamte ökologische bilanz unserer Produkte und dienstleistungen. bei einem massivholztisch ist das vergleichsweise einfach: es handelt sich

per se um einen nachwachsenden rohstoff, und wir beziehen unsere stämme aus nachhal-tiger Forstwirtschaft. schwierig ist dies aller- dings beim ulmenholz. dieses wird überdurch-schnittlich oft von Pilz befallen, weshalb die nachforstung sehr aufwändig ist. Wir arbeiten gerade an einem Projekt, mit dem die nach-forstung von ulmen in der schweiz gestützt werden soll. mit einem anderen Projekt versu- chen wir sicherzustellen, dass unsere dreh-stühle zuverlässig geeigneten recyclingprozes-sen zugeführt werden. schon heute lassen sich unsere Produkte fast vollständig rezyklie-ren. es geschieht aber längst nicht immer, und das möchten wir ändern. Verantwortungsvolles handeln ist aber nicht nur eine Frage von einzelprojekten, es ist teil der unternehmenskultur und -ausrichtung. dazu zählt unser standbein serVICe & remanuFaCturInG, mit dem wir sitzmöbel aller art überholen und aufarbeiten, auch im grossen rahmen. Kürzlich haben wir beispielsweise 1100 Zuschauersitze für die Konzert- halle von bad salzuflen saniert. das heisst konkret: die alten Polster und schaumstoffe ent- fernen, sortieren und umweltgerecht entsor-gen, neue schaumteile auf die schalen kleben, stoffe zuschneiden und nähen und die sitze neu polstern. Im Vergleich zu einer kompletten neubestuhlung ist dies ein beitrag zum be- mühen um nachhaltigkeit und ressourcen-schonung.

“The aim to create something new is part of our corporate culture.”The origins of the Girsberger group of companies go back to a woodturner’s workshop which was founded as a family enterprise in Zurich in the year 1889. Today, the group is managed by michael Girsberger, who belongs to the family’s fourth generation since the company was founded. During our talk, he explains how Girsberger, a medium-sized swiss company, successfully manages to hold its own against the competition and, at the same time, stands up strongly for resource protection and social justice.

Why are Girsberger products so successful on the market? What singles them out?

michael Girsberger: the office furniture market is characterized by intensive competition. nowadays, it is difficult to stand out from one’s competitors on the basis of product quality, design, or ergonomic advantages. our most successful products have often been those with unique characteristics. that is an important part of our product strategy. the new kind of mechanism hidden in the standpipe of the al3 aluminium swivel chair is such an example. It has since been patented ― like so many of the other products we have developed.

Where do you get your new ideas? Your competitors are, of course, also looking for something new.

michael Girsberger: as a family-owned, medium- sized company, we have the advantage of a complete in-house value chain, stretching from the initial idea for a product to its design and, finally, its production. of course, we do not always manage to design products that are completely innovative. however, our basic ap-proach is different from that of many of our competitors. the aim to create something new is part of our corporate culture. It is, there- fore, also the ambition of our employees. It is impossible for a company to establish this attitude in thought and behaviour overnight.What’s more, when we decide to develop a new product, we start by taking a very good look at the basics of the matter. such was the case when we developed the otto lounge chair and asked dr. thomas schriefers to help us in- vestigate the “office lounge” issue. the loungeWorlds booklet is the result of this cooperation. In other words, it was not just the case of developing a new product; we also wanted to thoroughly understand the relevant background and special exigencies. I am

convinced that such preliminaries are neces-sary when looking for new ideas.

and wherein lies the novelty of the otto lounge chair?

michael Girsberger: It lies in the many config- urations the chair allows. by using otto, one is able to create a very large variety of different seating landscapes. accordingly, otto is indeed a new kind of chair and an important element in efficient interior planning.however, our will to be innovative not only man- ifests itself in our products, but also in our company’s strategic orientation. For example, companies and organizations are increasingly attempting to use architecture and interior design to convey the essence of their brand. our business sector CustomIZed solutIons re- sponds to this trend by concentrating solely on the realization of interiors specifically designed for individual customers, such as conference rooms, canteens, lounges, or reception areas.

the majority of the Girsberger production sites are still found at their original locations. Why do you continue to produce in high-wage coun- tries such as switzerland and Germany? We must assume that you cannot achieve the same return as the competitor who chooses locations with the cheapest means of production.

michael Girsberger: In Girsberger’s case, find- ing the balance between economic success and social and ecological responsibility has always been important ― ever since the company was founded in the year 1889. that is why, for example, we hung on to our residential furniture sector in the mid-nineties, although it was operating at a high loss. We simply wanted to protect our expert craftsmanship and the re- lated workplaces. It was well worthwhile: today, our residential furniture products, especially the solid-wood tables, are a great success.

these days, it makes a good impression when a company concerns itself with corporate social responsibility.

michael Girsberger: that is true, nowadays companies are eager to let the public know about their efforts in this respect. I do not find this negative. Consumers have become aware that we have to change our economic systems if we wish to ensure social justice and protect our resources. as a result, the companies have also modified their stance; whether they acted for commercial reasons or because they were truly convinced is of little importance. either way, the fact that corporate social responsibil-ity is becoming more and more important is a welcome sign. In our case, it has always been a central part of the Girsberger company phi- losophy. outwardly, however, we never made much of a show about it. to me, it seems to be much more important that we remain strictly bound to corporate social responsibility in the future.

that sounds very general. Where can we find concrete proof of your endeavours to act in a responsible way, for example, in matters concerning environment protection?

michael Girsberger: resource conservation and sustainable consumption are of great importance where serial production is concerned. that is why we keep a routine check on our consumption of water, energy, and materials. moreover, we want to know where our products and services stand on an overall ecological basis. that is, in the case of a table made of solid wood, comparatively easy: Wood is, per se, a commodity which will grow again, and our logs come from sources committed to sustainable forest management. there are, however, difficulties where the wood of the elm tree is concerned. this wood’s susceptibility to fungal attacks is above average, so replant-

ing and growing the tree takes a lot of time and trouble. We are currently involved in a project to promote the replanting of elm trees in switzerland. In another of our projects, we are trying to ensure that our swivel chairs will undergo the right recycling processes on a regular basis. today, our products are already almost totally recyclable. however, they are by no means always recycled ― and that is something we want to change.but we do not only act with responsibility where individual projects are concerned; acting in a responsible way is part of our corporate culture and strategic orientation. our serVICe & remanuFaCturInG sector is a case in point. here, all kinds of seating are overhauled and refurbished on a large scale. For example, we recently restored 1 100 audience seats belonging to the concert hall in the town of bad salzuflen. In specific terms, this means that old covers and foam padding are removed, sorted, and disposed of in an environmentally compatible way. new foam padding is glued to the shells, the covering material is cut and sewn, and the seats are reupholstered.Compared to replacing old chairs with completely new ones, this constitutes an effort towards sustainability and the conservation of resources.

ende 2009 wurden am hamburger hafen die „Columbia twins“, zwei achtgeschossige bü rotürme der schifffahrtsgesellschaft Colum- bia shipmanagement, fertiggestellt. der neubau orientiert sich in der höhe an den umgeben- den alten speichergebäuden und schliesst die letzte baulücke am altonaer hafen rand. dieser exklusiven lage entspricht die hohe Qualität des Gebäudes mit seiner kupfer farbenen edel- stahlfassade. die neuen büros bieten den an- gestellten einen atemberaubenden Überblick über den hafen und die schiffe, die objekte ihres täglichen Wirkens. mit der lieferung von bürodrehstühlen und Freischwingern sorgte Girsberger dabei für den nötigen sitzkomfort.

at the end of 2009, two eight-story office towers, the “Columbia twins,” of the shipping company Columbia shipmanagement were completed. the new building harmonizes in height with the old warehouses in the vicinity and close the last gap in the row of buildings along the altona harbour front. the building’s quality and copper-coloured, stainless steel façade do justice to its exclusive loca tion. the new offices offer the company’s staff a breathtaking view of the harbour and the ships, the objects of their daily work. the office swivel chairs and cantilever chairs supplied by Girsberger maintain their environment’s aesthetic standards while providing exceptional comfort.

„In der Premium-lounge der bayarena in lever - kusen treffen sich businesspartner, Gäste, spieler und Funktionäre von bayer 04 nach dem abpfiff zur analyse des spiels in angenehmer atmosphäre. die lounge des vollständig reno - vier ten stadions sollte zwar funktional sein, gleichzeitig jedoch hohen ästhetischen anfor - derungen genügen. mit Girsberger haben wir für dieses umfangreiche Projekt einen herstel- ler gefunden, der uns tische, stühle und bänke wie auch zahlreiche sonderanfertigungen in einwandfreier Qualität fertigen konnte. dabei waren wir auf pünktliche auslieferungen angewiesen ― auch in dieser hinsicht hat die Zusammenarbeit mit Girsberger reibungs-los funktioniert.“

Girsberger service & remanufacturing vereint Kompetenzen in handwerk-lichen und industriellen bereichen des Holz- und metallbaus, der Polsterei und der Oberflächentechnik. it is not always necessary to replace worn furniture. such pieces can often be overhauled and restored. Perhaps the owner wishes to make a contribution towards sustainability and the conservation of resources, or prefers to keep the authentic furniture for aesthetic reasons. Girsberger’s service and remanufacturing combines the companyʼs competence in different sectors: manual and industrial processing of both wood and metal, upholstery work, and surface technology.

die ostwestfälische stadt bad salzuflen hat ihre 1963 errichtete, denkmalgeschützte Konzerthalle im Jahr 2010 einer kompletten sanierung unterzogen. aus ästhetischen und ökologischen Gründen entschied man sich dabei gegen eine neue bestuhlung. Girsberger hat die 1 110 abgenützten Zuschauersitze saniert und aufgefrischt: Innerhalb von nur zwei monaten wurden in der Produktionsstätte in endingen die alten Polster und schaumstoffe entfernt, sortiert und entsorgt, neue schaumteile auf die schalen geklebt, stoffe zugeschnitten und genäht sowie die sitze neu gepolstert. Pünktlich zur saisoneröffnung folgten der rücktransport und die montage.

In the year 2010, the east-Westphalian town ofbad salzuflen completely renovated its concert hall, built in 1963 and under historical pres- ervation protection. For aesthetic and ecological reasons, it was decided not to replace the old seats with new ones. Girsberger restored and refurbished the 1 110 worn-out audience seats. at Girsberger’s production plant in the town of endingen, the old covers and foam padding were removed, sorted and disposed of; new foam padding was glued to the seats, the covers were cut and sewn, and the seats re- ceived their new upholstery. this took only two months. the seats were returned and re- mounted in time for the season opening.
