• You can only choose 1 area at GCSE

• All areas specifications are assessed in the same way

If you want to choose a DT subject you should choose the material area that you enjoy the most.

Here are some slides showing the year 10 GCSE joint DT project completed in the first few weeks

of year 10.

This year the theme was Italy.

Other themes from past years…Ikea; Japan….

Each material area uses the theme to deliver skills in their area.

The boards are on display in the foyer and LRC.

Students work with fabrics and components; CAD packages; drawing and sketching techniques; manufacturing personal items; and Fashion and Interior design.

In the pictures opposite you can see a range of garments using a range decorative techniques based upon the Italian theme.

Here are some examples of other Textiles projects:

Design and making a dress that reflects a particular culture in it’s decoration and is suitable for the teenage market.

Other students like to design and make products other than garments.

Design and make a beach bag that could be sold in Quicksilver

Students work with metal, plastics and wood; CAD packages; Drawing and sketching techniques to create their products.

In the pictures opposite you can see a range of lighting solutions using Italy as the design theme.

Examples of coursework projects:

Design and make a storage container suitable for a teenager to be sold in IKEA

Design and make a piece of furniture to be sold in a shop specializing in sustainability.

Students work with computer modelling software; electronics kits; and basic Resistant materials.

Design and make an electronic alarm system for home use.

Design and make an electronic game for a school Christmas fair.

Students work with modelling materials, CAD packages; and hand sketching techniques.

In the pictures opposite students have worked on developing a Corporate identity for the Italian Tourism board. They have developed a range of products displaying their concepts.

Here are some examples of projects:

To design and make promotional products and packaging for a Pizza restaurant.

To design and make a range of ‘Pop Up’ greetings cards for Chinese New Year.

Students work with different food products and ingredients; Nutritional modelling programs; modern appliances and advanced preparation skills to design and make new dishes suitable for particular markets and occasions.

Design and make a dessert item suitable for Pacific coffee to attract the Teenage market.

Design and make a selection of cakes suitable for younger students to encourage them to eat fruits.
