FRONT COVER PLANNING

I have arranged with a local band to pose for my magazine as a mod band. It is a all female band. Male bands dominate the music industry, and therefore dominate music magazine covers. Both of the iconic mod bands such as The Jam or The who, are made up of all males. I therefore think it will be interesting turning a girl band into a mod band. I want to transfer the key connations of mod such as parka jackets and Fred Perry tops which were famously wore more by man but put them on females. While researching the mod genre I noticed most of the photographs includes males having out in groups, however I wanted to create a new, modern take on the genre and I believe using females will make it refreshing. The audience I am aiming my magazine at hang out in unisex groups, therefore they will not mind if a female or male appears on the cover, as long as they look cool they will want to find out about them.

WHAT I’VE LEARNT..

There is one dominant figure in the band is obvious

They are not all stood in one straight lines, they either at different levels or angles

To make the cover band out, the band such be presented in a striking way

I now need to identify everything that will appear on my cover to many sure it ALL relates to the genre. This includes hair, make-up and props.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT

The hair was big and bouncy. Youth cultures were popular in the 60’s, and so I looked at 60’s hairstyles for inspiration. It had volume in and sometimes a hair band. I therefore must make sure my models have hair like this to ensure it relates with my genre of mod.

Eyeliner was BIG. It was all over the lid in straight bold lines. Eyeshadow colours like greens and blues were popular.

Fashion includes fred perry, mini skirts, parkas, knee-high boots. I want to experiment with using all of these pieces to get a strong mod influence.

Union jacks were popular in the mod culture, so using a union jack prop would be a interesting relation to mod. A scooter (Vespa or lambretta) is essential. As well as music instruments.
