EXHIBITION DESIGN
Dóing - The Augmented ShopIt’s great do fail…but…We’ve succeeded.
CHALLENGE
So one day, one of the biggest Science Centres in Europe
thought we could help them envisioning a 524m2
exhibition. They’ve defied us to think and design an
unconventional maker space that would bring parents,
kids and geeks in to the same level of experience.
After a few months tinkering, we ended up with
Dóing - The Augmented Shop.
This is a shop, not a kindergarden.
Since the beginning this was our motto.
Together with the Science Centre team, we designed
a space that makes the participants feel curious about
the surrounding activities.
There is no constrains, visitors are free to explore the
different activities the way they want. They can learn
from their mistakes and have fun while doing it.
There is no room for “I can’t do it”!
CURIOSITY IMAGINATION REALIZATIONResearch
We went deep into understanding
the Maker and DYI culture.
We got to know a bit more about
creative processes and how adults
and children behave differently towards
a new challenge.
Inspiration
For some weeks we were kids again! We
tried the very activities that would be
presented at Dóing and we had little
fellows making us company! They taught
us how to fold paper planes and building
circuit boards.
Concept
The Augmented Shop.
As simple as this. We took a cosy, noisy and
small shop and make it huge enough so it
can take hundreds of curious visitor at a
time.
Visualization
You should have seen our studio!
We filled our walls with sketches,
pictures, post-its and mockups.
Prototyping
It's not only how it looks but how it feels.
We prototype in real scale to understand
the usability and the experience of the
exhibits. If it's not fun we go back and try
it again.
Scenarios
Who’s going where, who’s gonna do what? Is it
a group, is it a family? We solved this by
simulating different types of situations, paths,
and spaces suitable for a lot of different
activities.
Architecture
We went technical. Inside Dóing’s exhibit
there is a real shop with more than 100m2 and
a 3 meters high metal structure as an "airport"
for paper planes. This was a job for grown-ups!
Production
We rolled up our sleeves, it was time
to work hard! We supervised and joined the
production of all the elements and material
that were part of Dóing. Wasn't the concept a
Tinkering Space? Said and done.
