In what ways does your media product use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
In my magazine I use conventions that I had previously researched before making this product. My research showed that the main conventions of any typical rock magazine would be to show instruments, have the main subject and the main image on the front of the magazine and show attitude, and have a clear, bold masthead at the very top of the front cover; all of which my magazine does have.
If I were to compare my product, and challenge it to another rock magazine such as Kerrang! or Mojo, it would show that they share similar conventions and both aim for the same thing.
My Magazine.
Issue of Mojo published in 2014.
However my final piece would demonstrate how I have thought through carefully everything that I have added and everything that I have refrained from putting into my magazine. For example, I have specifically chosen black, white and red as my main colour scheme, to keep an on going theme within my magazine. I told myself not to put toomuch writing on the front cover otherwise it would look too busy.
I have tried to remain as closely as possible to my audience research and convention research. However I have made a few changes.Traditionally the main image would not cover the masthead unless it was a well known brand. I have gone against this purely because, if I had put it the other way round, it would look out of place, risking not being attractive to a potential customer.
Hat in front of masthead.Although the masthead is still readable.
Restrained amount of writing. One cover line is anchored my poster.
'FREAK' magazine has many typical conventions such as a masthead, strap lines, taglines, strips, cover lines, copy pictures, quotes, different fonts, main image that link to a double page spread and a letter from the editor that any new magazine may have.
'FREAK' magazine offers new and upcoming bands and artists to become known in the public eye. There are mentions of notorious bands, but the main aim of my magazine is so the readers and buyers of 'FREAK' become aware of these new and exciting musicians. 'FREAK' has another aim, which is something to challenge other popular rock magazines on.
