‘Surrealism occurs in everyday life’This collection is a visual exploration of the surrealism that occurs in everyday life, particularly that of

body manipulation and mutation, warping the frame and silhouette to represent distortion and abnormalities in the body. A fresh take on beauty and aesthetics combining a controversial theme

with a high fashion avant-garde style. The design process has been heavily influenced and inspired by surrealism, both in real life and in art, particularly the work of Jenny Saville and her portrayal of the

female form. Tight panels of warn leathers and skins adorn many of the garments indicating a sense of struggle and restriction, where as the contrasting quilted jerseys bulge and protrude from the

figure with the sense of abnormality found in mutated fat and skin. The collections colour theme is based around the warm yellow tones of the body, with the inkblot inspired black used to enhance and

cut through the garments with line and structure inspired by the surrealist sculptor Gabriel Orozco.

This collection is a visual exploration in to the ideology that madness resonates within us all and it is only those who embrace it that really ever begin to live. My initial inspiration for this came from the quote “A PER-SON NEEDS A LITTLE MADNESS, OR ELSE THEY NEVER DARE CUT THE ROPES AND BE FREE.” I wanted inject a sense of aesthetics into this body of work, therefore have used the work of artist ANNAKATRIN KRAUS as further inspiration. She depicts the juxtaposition of harsh truth versus inner beauty through controversially thought provoking sculp-tures. I began to see madness as a form of freedom and further developed my concept with the idea that what would normally be seen as a restraint such as hard leather buckled straps could in fact be an embellishment to a being with the right hard-hitting attitude. This therefore creates the base for many of my designs that feature leather, skins and metallic fastening and trimmings. My final inspiration comes from the 1973 TRIPTYCH BY FRANCIS BACON in which de portrays is lover on the eve of his drug over dose suicide. Within the paintings deep burgundy and dark plum tones ap-pear to represent the blood and life of a soul, balanced by soft minks and skin tones showing a blanker maybe dying canvas. This balanced tonal composition heavily influenced my concept of colour within the collection.

”CREATING FORMS OF THE ANTAGONISM BETWEEN TRUTH AND BEAUTY TO EXIST WITHIN.”
