Bicycles are already a reality in Rio de Janeiro's Downtown, despite the lack of cycleways.
The challenge is how to deal with the new situations that arise, with quality and safety for everyone and coherence with local and
user needs.

The original idea was a petition for cycleways in downtown
But why a petition, or a protest, which would probably be ignored, if we can do it better?

Rio de Janeiro's downtown area

Workshop with (big, paper) maps

Asking for online contributions, and mixing them later
Three groups:
- G1 people who use bicycle in the area,
- G2 people who use bicycle somewhere else and would like to use in the area,
- G3 people who don't use bicycle, but would like to.
Four maps:
- M1 Routes used today and desired,
- M2 Origin/destination,
- M3 Bicycle parkings, bicycle shops and support equipment (such as showers, air pumps) existent and desired,
- M4 Existent projects superposed to identify conflict points and connections.
Each group worked for 30 minutes on each map.
Next step, debating the work done and defining points for the support countings.
Now it's time to superpose the maps produced on the workshop with posterior contributions to consolidate the most used and
desired paths.

From the 3,000 grand total,only 3% were women :(
40% of the bicycles in downtown area are of services or delivery1 in every 4 bicycles in downtown area are cargo trikes.
Given the big number of trikes found out in downtown area, the cycleway's width must be adequated to these vehicles.

We collected data in 100 points of downtown area, looking for every single segments of the streets.
