Brassart is a specialist manufacturcr of period and

Hcritage products in what once \\"<IS thc heart of

England's industrial basc, thc Black Country. Now

most factories are closed or gonc, but Brassart

continues to produce truly British products using

traditional skills and tcchniqucs.

The business was foundcd in 1955 by the Collins

brothers in the basement of their homc under the

name of Brassart Craft. Thcy had a flair for the

aesthetics of door furniture combincd with the

practical skills to be successful.

The brothers retired in 1988 and the company \yas

owncd in (he follO\\'ing ten ycars by two public

companies before returning to private company

o\\'nership in ~lay 1998.

The expcrtisc in casting brass, brushed lacquering

and hand finishing has lcd from a small family

busincss in Birmingham to the current factory in

Lye and sales in over forty countrics.

Long rcnowncd for thc range and quality of

finishes from 'Lye' Polished Brass to Gold Plated

Brass, thc authentic period fittings can recreate

an accurate historical sccnc in buildings of

importancc whilst also putting that perfect

finishing touch to arcas of ncw interior design. In

spccial situations Brassart can makc usc of the

cxtensivc archive of pattcrns dating back to the

] 7th century, or alternatively, thc craftsmen can

cxactly match customcr requirements.

Each picce of door furniture, bathroom accessory

or electrical fitting made in thc factory is crafted

from local materials and hand finishcd and

polishcd by craftsmen using timeless techniques.

Brassart is committed to combining the skills and

values of the past with thc performance and

standards of the future. Traditional methods,

authcntic designs and quality worl\manship merging

to give the best concept in brass.

Casting material SCBJ / Stamping material CZ122

(Both of these grades are the best for the purpose).

Abbre\iations arc used on the packaging and on other

descriptive material as follows:

LPB Lye Polished and Lacquered. Each component is

individually lacquercd

BMA Bronze ~Ietal Antique. This is an applied finish.

Some spccial designs suitable for casting \\ill bc

cast in gunmetal and described as 'real' BMA

GP Gold Platc. This will be supplied 5 microns thick

unless specified otherwise

Tcsting Performancc

A. LC\'cr handlcs - havc bccn succcssfully tcsted to

13S-1951 category 1 'hemy duty'. The European hard·

warc standard for Icver handles and knobs at the date

of publication of this catalogue remains provisional

\\'ithin standard numbcr pr E:-i1906.

B. LocI,s - hm'e been sueecssfully tested to 13S5872

eategor~' 13 'hcavy duty'. Thc European harthntrc

standard for loel\s within pr E;\ 12209-1/2 rcmains

provisional.

C. LocI, cylindcrs - havc bcen sucecssfully type tested

for conformity to thc requirements of 13S ~2NI303.

D. Hinges (ball bcaring) - have bccn suceessfullv

testcd to 13S7352 catcgory 8. The European hard\\'arc

standard for hingcs \\'ithin pr EI\1935 rcmains

provisional.

Brassart IC\'cr handlcs Iw\'c bcen assessed as suitablc

for installation to 30 minute or 60 minute fire

rcsistant door scts tcstcd to BS476. Part 22 1987.

Unless ordered othcnl'isc, Icver handles and 6-1mm

knob scts arc sprung and 51mm knob scts arc

unsprung.

Pcriod, Prinecss, ConstHblc, Art Deco: faec fixed' with

Icvcr or knob circlipped to backplates for extra

strengtb. In addition they arc fixcd spindle to spindle

with self tapping sere\vs into the Lve spindle.

B. Lye spindlcs are 8mm square, slotted and II0mm

long. Spindles for bathroom turns are 5mm squarc.

C. Pull handles - for bolt through handlcs 102mm

long bolts with a V-1 \\'hit\\'orth thread arc supplied.

For back to back fixing left and right hand thrcaded

self loel(jn.~ bars \\'ith an overall size 152mm arc

supplied.

D. j\1l products arc supplied with appropriate size slot

headed sercws for wood doors. If alternative methods

of fixing arc requircd for mctal doors this should be

stated on the order. Washers and fixing bolts arc

supplicd with the pull handles.

Lock ccntrcs

A. Brassart locks have standard centres of 57mm for

lever keyhole and bathroom locks and 51mm for

cylinder locks, and locks \\ill be supplied \\'ith these

centres unless ordered otherwise. It is essential to

check loel, een tres on ordcrs.

B. Backplatcs of minimum Icngth of 171mm \\'ill

accommodate locks of 72mm centres.

A. Switchcs arc 6 amp with brass rocl\crs. Sockcts are

1.1 amp with white plastic rocl\Crs.

B. Single switch plates arc 95111m square and double

switch plmcs arc 155 x 951Tlm.

C. Thcrc arc a largc numbcr of variiltions available in

the elcctrical accessorics. Details may bc obtained

from the company.

Thc company recommends that products, whcrc

sUitablc for lacquering. arc lacquered wben installed

intcrnall~'. It is recommended that unlacquercd pro-

ducts should be supplied wben installcd cxtcrnally.

Cleaning details arc supplied \\'itb all surface fi."ed

products and thc company cmphasiscs thc importancc

of cnsuring that tbcy arc uscd.

Articlcs that have been coatcd with lacquer must

undcr no eirenmstances be polished with mctal polish

or abrasive cleaners as this will cause damage and

carll' diseolouration. Regular dusting \\'ith n soft brush

or camel hair brush supplemcntcd by occasional

washing \vith warm sonpy watcr should kecp the

product in good condition.

For articlcs fitted on cxterior doors rcgular dusting is

nch-isablc plus applving a thin coating of a good \\'ax

polish once a \\·eek.

Period ranges

Thc first age of elegance. Louis, called "The Sun

King" for adopting that fiery firmamcnt as thc

royal emblem, was thc cpitome of style and

good design.

Born in IIanovarian Gcrmany in 1660 and late

to the throne, the Bavarian influcncc is easy to

observe in the decorative lines of this period.

nder George, thc Baroque reached its

dramatic eminence.

The reign of Louis A'Vmarks the end of Baroque

and the start of thc lighter, more refined style

of the Rococo. The rangc is a fine example

of the elaborate ornamentation and

delicacy of the period.

Georgian

1725-1760

Continuing in the Rococo, this period of

Georgian rule saw the Italian influence come to

prominence. In the Georgian range the lighter,

more youthful style is cvident in the delicate

clean tooling.

Born in Scotland in 1728, Robert Adam was

greatly int1uenced by his grand tour of Italy in

1755. The Brassart range was created to reflect

classical interiors that he
