This document provides a short reference to
programmable microcontrollers and
microcomputers – such as the Arduino,
Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone - with the aim to
inspire makers to build their own project
leveraging these easy to program and easy to
connect tools.
Why have we wriUen this? Because -combined
with vast range of cloud based services- these
tools might be used to imagine, shape and
prototype the Internet of Things.…and -btw- we
don’t want to just inspire the crea=on new ways
to water your balcony plants (have a look at our
MEG project): we want to encourage creators in
playing with the future.

WhoaretheMakers?
According the “Urban Dic=onary”, the
expression “maker” is used to describe those
who love to create things in their spare =me
(o`en with their own hands) and can also be
called Hobbyists. These days, the term is
popular in the open hardware and hardware
hacking electronics communi=es.
Today, a maker is someone that plays with
both 3D printers and welding equipment, but -
we believe - a maker is -first of all - a creator,
producer, author, manufacturer, builder,
constructor, inventor. …and – ul=mately –
adesigner.

TheMakerCulture
© DESIGN GROUP ITALIA
The maker culture is a contemporary
subculture that intersects with hacker culture,
however, it is a culture that is predominantly
physical. The maker culture includes physical
material processes such as 3-D prin=ng,
numeric control cudng tools, woodworking
and metalworking.
Everything in the maker culture is informal,
networked, peer-led, with shared learning
mo=vated by fun. Due to the influence of the
“opensource” movement, the maker culture
stresses a cut-and-paste approach that
encourages the re-use of any knowledge,
components, tac=cs and designs.
© DESIGN GROUP ITALIA
TherealMakers’challenge
The maker movement was born as modern
hobby -a social movement with an ar=san
spirit- that celebrates a market of crea=ve
person individuals.
The real maker challenge is to go beyond
individual sa=sfac=on, overcome the applause
of the social neighborhood and target the real
big issues facing the world.
We think that play is totally good and makers
must have a learning curve. However, we are
not here to water plants on the balcony
anymore.

Measuringtherelevance
© DESIGN GROUP ITALIA
To help makers to forecast the impact of
their own projects, we propose a tool to
evaluate seven key dimensions of a project,
which we have compiled into a web-chart. The seven dimensions are listed as follows:
Purpose (from personal to planetary)
Time (from a day to a year)
Cost(from a cent to a million)
Complexity(from based to your own
knowledge to Nasa rocket science)
Access (from easily replicable with low cost to
not accessible)
Shareability(from not interes=ng to other
to viral on any social)
Novelty(from replica=ng something exis=ng to
something never saw before) How will the tool be used in its aggregate form?
This is too corporate and not individual!!!
Purpose
Time
Cost
Complexity
Novelty

There are people, projects and plaforms that have inspired us with
their achievements and we would like to say thank you to all of them.
Kudos to all and to anyone else that -star=ng from this ini=al prototype

Arduino is an open-source computer hardware and so=ware company that designs and manufactures microcontroller based kits for building digital devices and interac@ve objects that can sense and control the physical world. The project is based on a family of microcontroller board designs manufactured primarily by Smart Projects in Italy, and also by several other vendors, using various 8-bit Atmel AVR microcontrollers or 32-bit Atmel ARM processors.

The Intel Edison is a @ny computer offered by Intel as a development system for wearable devices. The system was ini@ally announced to be the same size and shape as an SD card and contain a dual-core Intel Quark x86[2] CPU at 400 MHz communica@ng via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. A later announcement changed the CPU to a 22 nm Silvermont dual-core Intel Atom CPU,[5] and in September 2014 a second version of Edison was shown at IDF, which was bigger and thicker than a standard SD card.
