Alternative Building Technology
Need to build a house quickly? Or build a lot of houses quickly to shelter a growing population? The moladi plastic mould formwork is filled with cement and sand, with plumbing, electricity, window, and door frames placed "between the formwork." The shell of the house is ready overnight. The main idea: very quick construction. "The question is whether conventional building methods are able to cope with the ever-increasing demand for quality homes," says Moladi founder Hennie Botes "Due to the simplicity of the method, construction techniques and skills can be transferred in a short time. In this way, the communities benefit from affordable shelter and entrepreneurs are skilled at the same time, creating employment," he says. The plastic formwork, which is reusable, goes up in four hours and is filled with the mix in about two. The walls are set on reinforced bar foundations and left to cure for three to seven days. Adding roof, windows, and doing some painting takes another three days. This construction process completes a house per day after the initial production start-up has been implemented. Impact of poverty housing
Poverty housing affects people’s health and well-being, their job prospects and ability to make a living. It locks people into a cycle of poverty. It also holds children back from fulfilling their potential: children living in bad housing are more likely to suffer from serious health problems, to have learning difficulties and miss school and to face unemployment and poverty later in life. The impact on children’s development is both immediate and long-term. Growing up in poor or overcrowded housing has been found to have a lasting impact on a child’s health and well-being throughout their life. Housing the homeless - Slum dwellers
• Alternative Building Technology
• The world is experiencing a global housing crisis. About 1.6 billion people globally live in substandard housing and 100 million are homeless, according to the United Nations. If no serious action is taken, the United Nations reports that the number of slum dwellers worldwide will increase over the next 30 years to nearly 2 billion.
• Despite the progress in meeting low cost housing in Africa, UN agency Habitat, says that the continent requires 4 million units per year to cover its low cost housing needs.
Growth in slum population
In its recent report, the UN agency notes that the failure of policies and the formal housing market to cater to the housing needs of the poor and lower middle-income households have translated to the growth in slum populations. The body further blames huge housing deficits in Africa to poor response of governments to the issue, ignorance by governments on the housing issue, land delivery systems, urban planning and poor organization of construction sectors.
But with the adoption of new building technologies, it remains to be seen whether housing in Africa could be significantly boosted given that the continent’s population is rapidly increasing.
