All things, connected and considered. !

From teaching hobbyists how to prototype electronics projects !I have commercialised my own connected product for global families.!

Tinker London! Good Night Lamp!

I travel the world to help my clients understand what is possible!and how to make it happen.!

I just came back from CES 2017 after being there in 2013.!

Most things can now be connected. !

Most things can now be connected with:!!•  LoRa!•  Radio (Xbee)!•  Wifi!•  Bluetooth!•  GSM !

Most things can now be connected!!•  Cheaply(ish)!•  Quickly (but not at software speed)!•  Semi-reliably!

Even then, most things can now be connected. !

Why is this important?!

Why is this important?!We have created a new territory of innovation.!

We have created solutions to problems!that we haven’t yet completely understood!or scoped.!

1. Smart cities.!

nominet.uk/researchblog/global-snapshot-great-uses-iot-urban-contexts/!

Global research!

Hello Lamp Post!

Your city is talking to you!

But who is that exactly?!

Big Belly! Veolia!

The city is a public concept, but a privately !owned reality. !!•  Energy!•  Water!•  Tax!•  Waste management!•  Policing!•  Transport!

What if the solution to the cities problems is!an economic conundrum?!

What if the solution to the cities problems is!too expensive?!

What if there is noone to glue it all together?!!•  Budget cuts!•  No in-house expertise!•  Too many possible solutions!•  Fear of vendor lock-in!•  Too much politics!

Sometimes, no matter what the tech, it’s the!service delivery that makes a difference.!

For cities, connecting things doesn’t help!solve people problems.!

2. Local and global connectivity.!

Services around the world.!

Behaviours around the world.!

3. It takes a long time to adopt new product !categories and the price has to be right.!

Those products may not however help them!much.!

And the company knows exactly !what is going on.!

4. Seamless connectivity is an illusion.!

Designing ways for a product to fail gracefully!is an important challenge.!

5. Educating consumers and being transparent.!

How can you get involved?!!•  Experiment around global / local connectivity !& services!!•  Work around farming, elder care, air quality & !climate change / city solutions.!

How can you get involved?!!•  Work with SMEs on small pilots.!!•  Work locally, plan globally.!

•  Develop in-house capabilities to cater to small!hyperlocal applications that may scale.!

Oxford Flood Network!

Air Quality Egg!
