Using historical and contemporary researchUnit 9Contextual References

a research into historical and contemporary work, showing understanding of the contexts which influenced the work .

What have you learned about the influences on other’s work?

B recording and presenting information explaining the use of visual language in others’ work. Where have you analysed examples? What did you learn?

c use of contextual references in own work How have you used references? What impact did they have on your ideas?

a) When looking for contextual references I focused my research on contemporary illustrators. Working in a range of styles, with some of these artists it was clear to see where the inspiration came from: for example the work of Eric van den Boom shows clear links to 80’s pop-art style.

b) I have analysed examples of other people work throughout my research. Looking at illustration focused on buildings to relate the work to my own. For example Andre Chiote and Zeb Love. Along with environmental posters. From this I have learnt how best to display my work in a poster format and how simply shapes can clearly give an impression of a building, it does not have to be complex.

c) When creating my initial designs and prototypes I referenced my research in each design. In order to clearly show where my ideas have been developed from.

Location studies All Pathways- Fine Art, Design, Multimediaa. recording of experiences or information to develop intentions What approaches did you use to examine and record your location? Representing the space; details; light etc. How did you decide and which worked the best? Why?

b use of materials, processes and technology or a combination of materials, processes and technology to develop ideas What did you learn through your initial enquiries? Experiments and techniques, use of an experimental process to generate new ideas, suitability of some rather than others?

a) I used a number of approaches to examine and record my location. I first begun with photographs to create a good record of the building from different angles to use later in class. More importantly I did a number of studies using a number of different materials. I began with a detailed sketch in order to gain a good understanding of the building, the angles etc. I learnt a lot about the shapes and angles within the building in particular its main visual qualities which play an important role in what my final outcome looked like.

b) I used a wide range of materials greatly experimenting in particular with printing techniques, to create my ideas, some timed these worked well other times they were not as successful as I would have likes (the collagraph print). However overall this added to my development and knowledge of this subject area. All in all greatly improving my final result.

Unit 13 (Design)

a) Resolve the needs of the brief to develop intentionsHow did you develop the final brief? What client / end user is it for? Why?

What constraints and requirements did you consider?

What research did you undertake into your chosen area of creative enquiry?

b) Develop a range of ideas in response to the brief. How did you develop your ideas for the final outcome? What techniques did you use to generate ideas? What influenced you in doing this?

Developing your personal brief a) I undertook a lot of research into the techniques and styles

of my chosen enquiry. I feel my use of screen prints and illustrator show a good level of skill using specialist techniques and materials. I also think that my final design to a greater extent answers the brief. The use of different printing techniques has increased by ability to successfully respond to an illustration brief. Within my sketchbook and evaluation I talked about changes that I would make to the final design and how this would make my design better.

b) I developed my ideas for a final outcome from a range of 6 initial ideas. These ideas were inspired by my own thoughts (the test piece) and my research. Combining your work with others makes for a more developed final piece. I ensured that each idea stuck closely to my brief to ensure that the meaning/purpose of the poster was not lost along the way. To generate ideas I did artists studies and my own versions, along with my own experiments. This was very useful as it allowed my to combine a range of ideas to create my prototypes.

Unit 11 Develop & Produce Own Ideas

a) Create and develop ideas in response to the brief. How did you interpret your brief? What different approaches to the same theme did you explore? What decisions did you make to refine your ideas?

b) Plan and produce finaloutcome using specialist working methods and processes. How did you decide on the final outcome? Why was this the best approach? How did you choose the techniques you’ve used? Did they work effectively?

Developing your personal brief a) I interpreted my brief via my research into the

buildings visual qualities from my experiments. Here noticing the use of colour, Reflection, shapes and pattern, and also the juxtaposition between the building and its surroundings. This last element helped me in creating an environmental campaign sort of brief. To refine my ideas I made a decision early on to focus around recycling and the ‘make Esher greener’ moto.

b) I decided on the final outcome by creating a number of different prints, a screen print and ‘block’ print I then chose between the two which would be most effective to combine with my graphic design work on illustrator. Overall I think the techniques I used were effective. The screen print was on the most part successful and the print over it was also a good standard. I would make some changes, such as lighter colours in the screen print, but overall I think it worked well.
