A Backpack (full of) Culture is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Culture of Croatia and the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia. It is financed by the state budget. The programme provides children with access and brings them closer to art and culture, develops their aesthetic cultureand educates them to become regular art and culture consumers, regular visitors of museums, galeries and theatres when they grow up. The programme is intended for schools further away from city centres to which culture and art programmes are less accessible.

The art and culture programme offers children and pupils a high level of artistic quality and professional standards. Our school “got” a Backpack ful of culture on January 30th 2015. Children’s Theatre Dječje kazalište Branka Mihaljevića from Osijek performed a puppet play “Tobija” for our younger pupils. The play was performed by professional actors Tihomir Grljušić and Zvjezdana Bučanin. It is a story about growing up. Young people are rarely happy with their looks and have numerous other problems, but they all want to fit in. Tobija is a dachshund and wants to change, to be different. A dog-fairy wants to help him.Tobija goes to the ZOO and talks with several animals and in the end he realizes that the best solution is to remain true to himself.

After the puppet play, actresses Areta Ćurković and Lidija Helajz ran an interesting educational workshop for pupils and their teachers. They learned a lot about kinds of puppets and acquired basic knowledge about animation through improvisation.

Older pupils enjojed the educational music programme called “The Harmonica in Blues” developed by Tomislav Goluban, a Croatian blues musician, harmonica player and singer. He won 4 Croatian top discography awards “Porin” (the equivalent of Grammy in Croatia). He was accompanied by Tomi Novak, the best blues guitarist in Croatia. Their show was very interesting and interactive.
