Reasons for migrating (going) into the Cloud

5

• Features features and features (Cloud first)

• Managed storage

• License costs

• Availability

• Performance

• Connectivity

IBM Cloud solutions – good choice?

6

• Hell yeah!

• IBM Cloud solutions / >7 billion $ 2014

• Amazon Cloud solutions / 4.6 billion $ 2014

• Microsoft Cloud solutions / 4.4 billion $ 2014

Choose SmartCloud Connections (Notes): Service Only or Hybrid

7

• Fundamental decision. You have to get it right the first time!

• If you get it wrong you have to knock down and start over

• If you have to start over you will very likely lose your data!

Page 8: Challenge accepted: IBM Cloud onboarding & Upgrades to IBM Notes Browser Plug-in

Differences between Service Only and Hybrid

8

• Service Only:

– Your entire Email structure is in the Cloud including your Directory

– All of your Administration is done in the Cloud via web interface

– It’s all or nothing: When you move your MX-records your entire organization has to switch to Cloud all at once

– Very limited options for customization

– No knowledge about Notes/Domino Administration required to manage your users

• Hybrid:

– SmartCloud Notes becomes an extension of the on-premises Notes/Domino infrastructure

– Administration of users is done both using Domino tools on-premises and the webinterface

– You can put your users on Cloud over time at a pace that you set

– You can migrate users email to the Cloud due to the integration with your on-premises servers

– More options for customization

SmartCloud Notes Hybrid? yes, if ...

9

• … you want to migrate user email

• … you want to move to Cloud in stages

• … you want to keep some users on-premises

• … you have Notes/Domino applications and will use them after the move to Cloud

Need very minimal Administration capabilities Yes Maybe

Can start with clean slate inboxes Yes Yes

Can cutover all at once Yes Yes

Have Notes/Domino Admins skills and require flexible env. No Yes

Have Notes/Domino apps and want to maintain once move email to Cloud

No Yes

Want to keep existing user Ids No Yes

Want to migrate existing email No Yes

Require coexistence (Cloud and on-premises) No Yes

SmartCloud Notes Hybrid: What does it require?

11

• One (*) server with IBM Domino in a passthru role (Domino 8.5.2 or later)

– This server does not perform any mail routing or replication

– It doesn’t require any significant disk space and processing speed

• One (*) Domino hub server for directory replication and mail routing (Domino 8.5.1FP2 or later)

– that’s often an existing server

• Notes/Domino infrastructure (Directory server, etc…)

– Domino servers at appropriate (recent) versions

(*) two recommended for redundancy

Everybubble is a database andits color indicates the type, like mail or application.Small bubbles are used byfew users, large bubblesby many. The X-axisshows read traffic, the Y-axis shows write traffic -so databases on the topright are have mostnetwork I/O while ones onthe lower left are rarelyused.

This demo visualizesoptional iDNA functionalityto integrate Domino weblog data. This enablesvarious reports around weband mobile usage. Thisexample shows what typesof databases are used byrich clients only, both richclients and browsers, or byweb browsers only(desktop or mobile). Appsthat are accessed from richclients usually involvehigher risks in e.g. Cloudand migration scenarios, compared to apps that arealready usable viabrowsers.

This "bubble chart" showshow alive the emailinfrastructure is. Everybubble is a mail domain andtheir color indicate differentTop-level domain names like.com, .de, .co.uk, etc. Thebubble size indicates theamount of users who havebeen in contact with thismail domain. The X-axisshows number of received, the Y-axis shows number ofsent messages - so withdomains on the top right, lots of messages have beenexchanged while ones onthe lower left are rarelycommunicated with.

We’re assuming “Hybrid” in this session.Let’s onboard user mailfiles and their local IBM Notes client installation!

Hybrid: Onboarding methods

25

• OPT (Onboarding Planning Tool)

– Used to gather and fix potential problems in mail files at the start of the transfer process

– Time spent fixing issues here can save lots of time and aggravation later

• OTT (Onboarding Transition Tool)

– Used to manage the transfer of “batches” of mail files to the IBM data center

• To get access to OPT/OTT an IBM business partner needs to take classes and certifications

• OPT / OTT has been developed to enable Partner led Cloud service provisioning with data transfer

• IBM also delivers chargeable Cloud onboarding via Software Services for Collaboration (ISSC)

Page 26: Challenge accepted: IBM Cloud onboarding & Upgrades to IBM Notes Browser Plug-in

@panareima

#ICONUK

Hybrid: Onboarding methods

26

• MOM Tool (Mail Onboarding Manager)

– moves your on-premises IBM Notes mail data to the cloud

– provisions new or existing Connections Cloud accounts with SmartCloud Notes mail

– creates a replica of your on-premises Domino directory in the tool locally

– transfers mail files and assigns subscriptions

– is organized into 5 pages, each of which provides information or capabilities that step through the onboarding process

– controls when and how mail files are moved and accounts are provisioned

– monitors the onboarding progress on the tool's Dashboard or the Detail view on the Staging page

– can be used without the help of an IBM business partner

Hybrid: IBM Notes Client onboarding

36

• Client Configuration tool (config.nsf)

– Checks for the following information (besides many other things – see more info link below)

• The client is a version supported for IBM SmartCloud Notes access

• The config.nsf file contains information needed to perform the configuration

• The downloaded data is less than 24 hours old

– Confirms that the user is logged in using the ID that they will use in the service.

– Creates a wildcard Connection document that the client will use to connect to a mail server in the Cloud through the proxy server in the service. The server name in the Connection is */your_certifier, where your_certifier is the name of the OU certifier you provided for your mail servers during Cloud service configuration.

– Creates a Location document called ‘SmartCloud for username’, or updates it if it already exists and is incorrect
