A MESSAGE FROM ATTIVIO’S CEOI spent the first ten years of my career hoping that business intelligence, client relationship management and enterprise resource planning applications would help my colleagues and I run our businesses with precisely tailored and timely decisions. In reality, though, all we really got were graphs and tables, so we still had to call around just as in the old days in order to fully understand the causes driving variations — whether for the good or bad. This is because structured data can only tell you WHAT is happening in your organization, but not WHY.

I spent the next ten years in the world of unstructured content and data, analyzing the information in content management systems, support logs, document management systems, emails, documents and the Web.

While this was a great step forward, we still could not figure out what a 10% growth in support calls or more recently what a 15% decline in positive comments in social media and other such findings actually meant in terms of transactional value, because unstructured content on its own, represents just one more piece of the overall picture. In the quest to make the best possible decisions, analyzing structured data and unstructured content independently just results in more questions and more work.

This is the reason we founded Attivio — to create a unified information access platform that correlates every available piece of structured data and unstructured content, enabling our customers to seize opportunities, solve business challenges and fulfill their strategic vision.

enterprise deal with thousands of IT incidents, many of which are critical and time-sensitive. Before deploying AIE, the analysts had to manually sift through individual silos of information,

including service databases, vendor documentation, wikis, emails, SharePoint

and more, causing unacceptably high resolution rates.

Attivio worked alongside the company to seize the opportunity – deploying AIE to

give the support team a single unified view into every relevant information source. The cost-per-ticket decreased dramatically and

mean-time-to-resolution was reduced by more than 40%.

S O LV E C H A L L E N G E SA major bank was required to reserve more than $1 billion in cash to guard

against fines that could result if it was found to be in violation of the ever-changing landscape of regulations

governed by more than 200 agencies worldwide. Different parts of the bank

concentrated on local, national, and global regulators, all disparate and in

constant motion.

Attivio worked with the bank to solve their challenge – creating an automated

system to identify changes on regulatory sites and in the news; alert

the appropriate personnel to implement policy changes, via role-specific

dashboards; and provide an audit trail of updates. The money in reserves

reduced by half.

countries, 50,000 employees and more than 100 separate application sources

of information.

Attivio worked with them to fulfill the vision – converging more than

90 customer-facing and internal applications – all of which gathered

data in different ways – into a single, unified point of entry.

All of AIE’s technical layers integrate easily with other enterprise applications and systems using an enterprise service bus and other enterprise messaging infrastructures. AIE utilizes a layered, service oriented architecture (SOA) with event-driven workflows. As one component within an AIE workflow completes desired tasks, system messages are forwarded to the queue of the next component, advancing the workflow through AIE’s technical layers as needed.

UNIVERSAL INDEXAIE ingests all types of structured data and unstructured content, building a schema-less index of unified information that can be accessed with a single query, AIE does not require relationships between any data or content to be defined in advance. AIE ingests structured data on a table-by-table basis, retaining logical structure and data integrity — unlike other information solutions that “flatten” or denormalize databases, severely diminishing their business value.
