ARIADNE  is  funded  by  the  European  Commission's  Seventh  Framework  Programme

Towards Interoperability: The ARIADNE Registry Dimitris  Gavrilis,  Christos  Papatheodorou

Digital  CuraDon  Unit  IMIS  –Athena  Research  Centre

ARIADNE Objectives •  Integration of the existing archaeological research data

infrastructures so that researchers can (re)use the various distributed datasets.

• Activities: •  Aggregation: gather information about the existing data resources

and services. •  Integration: implement advanced search functionalities on this

information in order to support the discovery of resources that make good candidates for integration.

Data Registries • Data organization and management approach that

provides access to and re-use of distributed data resources and services.

• Datasets, collections, metadata schemas and vocabularies along with their mappings are hosted and described by a common schema.

• ARIADNE project aims to step beyond accessibility and re-usability and integrate existing archaeological research data.

Overall Architecture

ARIADNE Catalogue Data Model Outline The central notion of the model is the class Archaeological Resource.

• REST based ingest service •  receives XML instances compliant with ARIADNE Catalog Data

Model XSD •  check for mandatory fields, integrity checks, perform auditing on

newly ingested records, etc. •  a status / response result in JSON/XML

Data Integration architecture

Main services

ARIADNE  Catalog  &  Data  Access:    •  contains  the  database  where  all

informaDon  is  stored;  follows  the  ACDM  model

•   accessible  through  a  Data  Access  Layer

Main services

Deposit  Service:    Ingest  ACDM  related  informaDon  and  to  check  for  mandatory  fields,  integrity  checks,  perform  audiDng  on  newly  ingested  records

Main services

Digital  assets  management    •  provides  tools  to  manage  digital

assets  within  the  ARIADNE  catalog    •  create  new  records  and  manage

exisDng  records  in  the  ARIADNE  catalog

Main services PreservaDon  Service  stores  the  full  lifecycle  of  each  enDty  of  the  ACDM  model  including  vocabularies

Main services Quality  Service  evaluates  the  provided  informaDon  about  an  enDty  (e.g.  a  dataset,  collecDon  or  a  distribuDon)  and  reports  back  a  quality  measure.

Main services

Metadata  Enhancement  •  Uses  ontologies  and  vocabularies.    •  Enhancements  include  mining  of

relaDons,  automaDc  linking  with  thesauri  and  vocabularies,  etc.

Main services Vocabulary  Management  •  Ingest  and  manage  vocabularies  •  SKOSify  vocabularies    •  Manage  SKOS  concepts,  ediDng  and

interlinking  with  each  other

•  What: to enable resource discovery according to •  Event Types (such as excavation, survey etc), •  Topic/theme, •  Collections/Objects.

•  Where: to enable resource discovery according to spatial criteria.

•  When: to enable resource discovery according to temporal criteria, such as local/national period terms.

•  Resource type: to enable resource discovery based on the attribute ariadne:subject of the class ArchaeologicalResource: •  Fieldwork databases, Event/intervention databases, Sites and

monuments databases, Scientific databases, Artefacts and Collections of Artefacts and Burials.

•  Need: mappings to SKOSified thesauri and vocabularies of archaeological object types, periods and topics.

Integration strategy

Main services Resource  Discovery  Allows  searching  under  the  criteria:  Language,  Geographical,  Temporal,  ThemaDc,  Keyword

Main services

Preview  Service  a  group  of  records  are  displayed  In  a  list,  On  a  map,  On  a  Dmeline,  Using  a  combinaDon  of  map,  Dmeline  and  other  criteria  (e.g.  themaDc)

• Metadata mappings • Metadata mappings to CIDOC CRM

•  Ontology based integration

• Vocabulary mappings to enable

Further needs for semantic integration
