• An intelligent network

platform that provides safe,

reliable and efficient electric

services by integrating diverse

resources to meet customers’

and society’s evolving needs.

• Fosters broad market activity

that monetizes system and

social values, by enabling

active customer and third

party engagement that is

aligned with the wholesale

market and bulk power

system.

Con Edison: Enabling customers, thru AMI, to make

better decisions about DER

• Implementation of Siemens EnergyIP for 4 million proactive and passive customers

to support (in)direct participation in REV markets.

• Enables Distributed System Platform (DSP) functionalities through two-way

communications for:

Engaging with customer-sited devices

Integrating with customer service and other internal systems

Informing engineering and operations modeling for Grid

planning/modernization

• Facilitates Demand Response and DER penetration resulting in system-wide

efficiencies, enhanced visibility, and control functions:

Providing near real-time electricity usage, capacity constraints and customer

generation data

Reshaping the load curve through responsive device integration

Demand response as part of an overall DER strategy

• Used for transmission-level benefits

• Wholesale markets contracted load from

aggregators to deal with issues

• Utilities were left to deal with distribution

challenges separately

Until recently

• Investments in the distribution network

along with the penetration of DER’s is

creating challenges

• Utilities are more active in wanting control

of DER resources

Now

Already monitoring the FINTECH disruption?

The Financial Services industry is facing even more disruption than any time

since 1970 (ATMs, discount brokers, index mutual funds).

• Traditional retail banks versus Online-only banks

• Traditional lenders versus Peer-to-peer marketplaces

• Traditional asset & portfolio managers versus Robo-advisors on trading

platforms

• Traditional cash functions versus Apple/Samsung Pay and Google Wallet

The wildcard underneath all this change is Blockchain-as-a-services platform.

This technology could lower the cost of many financial activities to near-

zero.

What about Blockchain?

• Blockchain uses cryptography and a distributed messaging protocol to

create a shared ledger between trading counterparties to execute simple

transfer of asset ownership or more complex transactions using ‘smart

contracts’.

• Data on the ledger is pervasive and persistent and creates a reliable

‘transaction cloud’.

• Offers potential to reducing the complex billing and settlement functions

in each country.

The mantra of business “Trust but verify” changes to “Trust because you can

100% verify”.

Devices will be able to choose between power suppliers

picking up the cheapest tariffs

• Accenture developed a Blockchain-based, smart

electric plug for adjusting power consumption.

• Accenture work has changed the Blockchain to

let it negotiate deals on behalf of its owner.

• The Blockchain adaptation can be seen as a step

towards the future Internet of Things since it

enables re-ordering supplies based on a

precoded pre-order.

Experts worldwide see Blockchain as a basis for development of the

Internet of Things
