DESCRIPTION

What does “Islam” mean? The word الإسلام [Islam] is an infinitive word derived from س ل م [silm] root in if‘al pattern and used as noun and infinitive. The word silm means “release/keeping away; and to be distant from fear, doubt, trouble, lack of peace, unhappiness, fight, war, pain, suffering, material and spiritual inconveniences, weakness and decaying, and all the negativities.” This word is also the root of salim, selam, teslim, Islam etc. The word’s “Islam” form means “strengthening” [removal from problems, worries, fear, unhappiness, fights, wars, and similar negative things]. Hence, the religion Islam means the “the religion that strengthens humans [entire range of principles that protects and secures people by putting a distance between them and problems, worries, war, weakness, spiritual illness, unhappiness, and similar things].” http://presentationofislamandquran.com/principles.html

SURAH AT-TAWBAH (THE REPENTANCE)

MEDINAN PERIOD

Division: 695

1,2An ultimatum, a decisive warning by Allah and His Messenger to those who associate other with Allah, whom you have made a covenant:

“Travel across the Earth for four months more. And know that you are surely not to make Allah fail and surely, Allah is the One Who to disgrace the infidels; those who consciously deny His Divinity and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]”.

3,4And a declaration to the people from Allah and His Messenger stating that Allah and His Messenger have no ties with those who associate others with Allah, except for those who associate, with whom you have made covenant on the “greatest day of Hajj [Pilgrimage]”,404 those who did not do any evil to you and those who never helped others against you: “If you repent, it would be better for you. And if you turn away, then know that you are not to make Allah fail”. Give the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] the tidings of a painful punishment! Then, fulfill your promises to them until their term is completed. Surely, Allah likes those who are under His guardianship.

5And when untouchable months/months of Hajj have passed, kill those who associate others with Allah wherever you find them, seize them imprison them and wait for them at each observation point. But should they repent, perform Salat [Support financially and spiritually; establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the community] and give zaqat/tax, then let them free. Surely, Allah is the Most Forgiving of the sins of His servants, the One Who does not punish them, the Most Forgiving, the Possessor of Vast Mercy.

6Should one of those who associate others with Allah beg for forgiveness, give him the chance to listen to the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his safety. This is because they surely are a people who do not know.

7How can be a covenant between Allah and His Messenger and those who associate others with Allah other than those with whom you made a covenant near Majid al-Haram? As long as oppose you, then you oppose them. surely, Allah likes those who are under His guardianship.

8-10How can it be? And had they prevailed over you, they would not have contemplated about an oath or a covenant about you. They try to delude you with their mouths but their hearts resist. And most of them are disobedient: they have sold

1

Page 2: 113 surah at-tawbah (the repentance)

the Ayat of Allah at a low price and averted people from the path of Allah. Surely, what they did was evil. They do not contemplate about an oath or a covenant with a believer. And they are the transgressors.

11And should they repent, perform Salat [Support financially and spiritually; establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the community] and give zaqat/tax, then they will be among your brothers in the religion. And thus We expound Our Ayat for a people who know.

12And should they break their oaths after having given their promise and speak evil about your religion, fight those who blaspheme; consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] right away so they may desist. Surely, there will be no covenants for them.

13Will you not fight against a people who break their oaths, intend to expel the Messenger out of his land and attack you in the first place? Or do you fear them in awe out of respect, love and knowledge? If you are believers, Allah is the One Who is worthy for you to fear in awe out of respect, love and knowledge.

14,15Fight them so Allah may punish them through your hands and disgrace them. and He may make you victorious over them and heal the hearts of a believing people, remove the hatred from their hearts. Allah accepts the repentance of whomever He pleases. Allah is the Most Knowing, the Best Law-Maker, the One Who precludes corruption best/makes incorruptible.

16Do you think that you will be set free before Allah declares/marks and shows those among you who make their best efforts, do not take close friends from among the subordinates of Allah and His Messenger and you? And Allah is the Most Knowing of what you do.

17While those who associate others with Allah witness their own blasphemy; their conscious denial of the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], it is impossible for them to maintain the masjid of Allah. They are the ones whose deeds will be wasted. And they shall abide in the Fire eternally.

18Only those who believe in Allah and the day of Akhirat [Afterlife], perform Salat [Support financially and spiritually; establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the community], give zaqat/tax and fear Allah in awe out of respect, love and knowledge can build and maintain the masjid of Allah. And they are expected to be among those who follow the righteous path they are guided.

19Do you procure water for the pilgrim and build Masjid al-Haram as those who make their best efforts in the path of Allah? They cannot be equal before Allah. And

2

Allah will not guide those people who do wrong; act against their own good by associating others with Allah.

28O you who have believed! Those who associate others with Allah are impure. Let them not come close to Masjid al-Haram after these years. If you fear lest you will lose your income when they are away, Allah will soon enrich you with His bounties when He wishes so. Surely, Allah is the Most Knowing, the Best Law-Maker.

29Fight those among the Companions of the Scripture who disbelieve Allah and the day of Akhirat [Afterlife], who deny that which Allah and His Messenger has made haram [forbidden] and do not adopt the true religion even though they are humiliated until they will give jizyah [tax imposed of the Companions of the Scripture].

31They have taken from among the subordinates of Allah, wise, priests and Jesus, son of Mary, as their gods. But they have been commanded to worship only the One God. There is no god but Allah. Exonerated is He from that which those who associate others with Allah associate with Him.

32They intend to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths. Yet, Allah insists on completing His light although the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] dislike it. 20Those who believe, emigrate and make their best efforts in the path of Allah with their wealth and lives are more exalted before Allah. They are the ones who shall be saved.

21,22Their Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] gives them the good tidings of the gardens of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise], which have endless blessings, into which He will admit them to abide therein eternally. Surely, Allah has a great reward with Him.405

23O you who have believed! If your fathers and brothers prefer blasphemy; conscious denial of the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] over the faith, do not take them as your helpers, guides, guardians. And whoever among you takes them as his helpers, guides and guardians, he is among those who do wrong; act against their own good.

3

Page 4: 113 surah at-tawbah (the repentance)

25Surely, Allah has helped you at many places, on the day of Hunayn.406 When your number boosted your self-confidence but it did not avail you and the Earth seemed cramped to you despite its width. Then you turned away and fled.

26Then Allah cast upon His Messenger and upon the believers the tranquility and assurance/morale within their hearts and descended armies which you were unable to see. He punished the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. And this was the punishment of the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].

27Then, after all this has ended, Allah will ordain return upon whomever He pleases. And Allah is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

(113/9; At-Tawbah/23, 25-27)

Division: 698

30And the Jews said: “Uzair [Ezra] is son of Allah”. And the Christians said: “the Messiah is son of Allah”. These were the words they utter in their mouths and they pretended to reiterate the statements of the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], who had lived before them. Allah fought them. See how they are averted!

33Although Allah dislikes those who associate others with Him, He is the One Who has sent His Messenger with the guidance to the righteous path and the true religion to exalt the Religion over all other religions.

(113/9; At-Tawbah/30, 33)

34O you who have believed! Surely, many rabbis and priests consume the wealth of the people unjustly and avert them away from the path of Allah. And as for those who pile gold and silver but refrain from spending them for the cause of Allah/providing sustenance first for their relatives and then others; give them the tidings of a painful punishment!

35On that day, gold and silver that have been piling will be heated in the Fire of Jahannah [Hell] and their foreheads, flanks and backs shall be stigmatized with them:

4

Page 5: 113 surah at-tawbah (the repentance)

“This is that which you have collected for your soul. Now taste that which you have been piling!”.

24Say: “If your fathers, sons, brothers, wives, relatives, your people, your wealth, your business which you fear decline, residences you like are more beloved to you than Allah, His Messenger and making efforts in His path, then wait until Allah will execute His command. And Allah will not guide the people of disobedient.

(113/9; At-Tawbah/24)

36Surely, twelve is the number of the months in the decree of Allah He from the day He created the Heavens and the Earth. Four of which has been made untouchable. This is the religion that protects. Therefore, do not treat yourselves unjustly during the untouchable months. And fight those who associate others with Allah and attack you together. And surely, know that Allah is with those who are under His guardianship.

37 “Nesi” (deceit through postponement)407 is only an increase in blasphemy; conscious denial of the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb that with it the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]are deluded; they consider it halal [permissible] one year and haram [forbidden] in the following year so they may match the number of that which Allah has made haram [forbidden] and that which Allah has made halal [permissible]. Evil nature of their deeds made enticing to them. and Allah will not guide the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].

38O you who have believed! What is the matter with you that you cling heavy to the ground/stuck at where you are when you are told to set out to fight for the

5

cause of Allah? Do you prefer simple worldly life over Akhirat [Afterlife]? But benefits of the simple worldly life are rather less than of Akhirat [Afterife].

39If you resist fighting, Allah will punish you with a painful punishment and replace you with another people and you cannot harm Him. And Allah is the Omnipotent.

40Should you not help the Messenger, know that Allah will surely help him. When the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] drove him out as the second of the two. When they both were in a cave. When he said to his friend: “Do not grieve, Allah is with us indeed”. Then Allah cast upon their hearts tranquility, assurance and morale, reinforced him with unseen soldiers and made the speech of the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] the most humiliated. Word of Allah is the most exalted. And Allah is the Most Exalted, the Almighty, the Most Honorable, the Invincible/the Subduer, the Best Law-Maker, the One Who precludes corruption best/makes incorruptible.

41Set out to fight with light equipment and heavy equipment and make your best efforts for the cause of Allah with your wealth and lives. If you should know, it is better for you.

(113/9; At-Tawbah/38-41)

Division: 703

42Had it been a close booty and a simple campaign, they would surely have followed you. But that which was hard was distant for them. yet they will swear by Allah, saying: “If we were able to, we would certainly have set out with you” –they destroy themselves- And Allah knows that they are liars.

43Allah has forgiven you. Why did you let them until the righteous and the liar were clear to you?

44Those who believe in Allah and the day of Akhirat [Afterlife] will not ask you for permission to make their best efforts for the cause of Allah with their wealth and lives. And Allah is the Most Knowing of those who are under His guardianship.

45Those who ask you for permission are the people who believe in Allah and the day of Akhirat [Afterlife] though their hearts are in doubt and they struggle in their doubt.

6

Page 7: 113 surah at-tawbah (the repentance)

46Had they wished to set out, they would certainly have made some preparations. Yet Allah was not pleased with their sending and He kept them back. –And they were told: “Sit with those who sit!”.-

47Had they set out with you, they would have only increased corruption and they would have hasted to ignite a social fire among you. Among you were those who were to heed them. and Allah is the Most Knowing of those who do wrong; act against their own good.

48Surely, they tried to avert people away from their religion before and plotted against you. Then the Truth came and the command of Allah emerged although they did not wish for it.

49Some of them say: “Let me go, do not let me be in the social fire/do not put me in trouble!”. Open your eyes! They have already fallen into the social fire. And Jahannah [Hell] will enshroud the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].

50When good touches you, they resent it. And when evil touches you, they will say: “We have certainly taken precautions before”. And they turn away and leave, rejoicing.

51Say: “Never will touch us other than that which Allah has decreed upon us. He is our guardian. Therefore, let the believers rely only unto Allah for their affairs”.

52Say: “Do you expect for us other than one of the two good things? We, on the other hand, expect for the punishment of Allah, either from Himself or through our hands. Now observe, surely we do observe with you”.

53Say: “Spend in the path of Allah, either willingly or not; it will never be accepted. Surely, you have become a people of disobedient”.

54And their blasphemy; their denial of the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] and their reluctance to perform Salat [Support financially and spiritually; establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the community], and unwillingly expenditure in the path of Allah caused their expenditure not to be accepted.

55Therefore, do not envy after their wealth and children. Yet Allah intends to punish them in the simple worldly life and take their lives while they are infidels; the people who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] with them.

7

Page 8: 113 surah at-tawbah (the repentance)

56They swear by Allah that they are among your people while they are not. But they are a people who fear.

57Had they managed to find a place to hide or caverns to settle or a cove to shelter, they would certainly have headed towards there with their heads high in the air.

58Some of them accuse you about the charity. Yet, if the charity is given to them you see them pleased but when the charity is not given to them, they become angry.

59If only they were grateful for that which Allah and His Messenger had given to them. and if only they had said, “Allah is sufficient for us. Allah will soon bestow upon us His blessings and His Messenger too. Surely, We incline towards Allah”.

60Truly, as an allocation/an obligation from Allah, the Sadakah [Charity]/public expenditures are only for the poor, the needy, the unemployed, public servants, those whose hearts to be encouraged to Islam, unfree slaves, those in heavy debt, those in the path of Allah [soldiers, students and teachers] and the stranded travelers. Allah is the Most Knowing, the Best Law-Maker.

61And some of them hurt Prophet and say: “He does and approved everything he is told!”. Say: “He is an ear for good of you; he believes in Allah, he believes in the believers and he is a mercy upon those believers among you”. And as for those who hurt the Messenger of Allah; for them will be a painful punishment.

62They swear by Allah for you to please you. If they are believers, it is more appropriate for them to convince Allah and His Messenger.

63Surely, whoever strives to take on Allah and His Messenger, do they not know that the Fire of Jahannah [Hell] will be for them to abide therein eternally? This is the greatest disgrace.

(113/9; At-Tawbah/42-63)

Division: 704

64The hypocrites fear lest a Surah that will inform them that which is within their hearts will be sent down. Say: “Mock! Surely Allah will disclose that which you are afraid of.

65And should you ask them, they would certainly answer, “We were distracted, just playing a game”. Say: “Were you mocking Allah and His Ayat and His Messenger?”.

8

Page 9: 113 surah at-tawbah (the repentance)

66Do not apologize, you have certainly blasphemed, consciously denied the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] after having said: “We have believed”. Should We forgive some of you, We sill surely punish them for they are sinners.

(113/9; At-Twbah/64-66)

Division: 705

67The hypocrite men and the hypocrite women are from each other; they command the evil, avert from the good and they withhold their hands/are stingy. They have abandoned Allah and Allah has abandoned them. truly, the hypocrites are the ones who have gone astray from the righteous path.

68Allah has promised to the hypocrite men and the hypocrite women and the infidels; those who consciously deny/disbelieve His Divinity and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] the fire of Jahannah [Hell] to abide there eternally. He is sufficient for them. and Allah has cursed them and deprived them of His mercy! And for them will be a persistent punishment.

69You are like those before you who are more exalted than you in power, wealth and children and who enjoyed their share. So, you wished to enjoy your share as those before you had enjoyed theirs. You have distracted like the distracted. Their deeds have been wasted in the world and in Akhirat [Afterlife] and they are the losers and sufferers.

70Have they not revived the news of those before them; the people of Noah, Ad, Thamud, the people of Abraham, the Companions of Midian and devastated cities? Their messengers came to them with manifest evidence. And then Allah did not treat them unjustly. But they did wrong by associating others with Allah.

(113/9; At-Tawbah/67-70)

71The believing men and the believing women; some among them are helpers, guides and guardians of others. They command the good which is accepted by all and forbid all that is evil, perform Salat [Support financially and spiritually; establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the community], give zaqat/tax, obey Allah and His Messenger. Upon them Allah will have mercy. Surely, Allah is the Most Exalted, the Almighty, the Most Honorable, the Invincible/the Subduer, the Best Law-Maker, the One Who precludes corruption best/makes incorruptible.

Division: 707

73O Prophet! Strive against the deniers and the hypocrites. And treat them harshly. Their residence will be Jahannah [Hell]. And how an evil settlement it is!

74They swear by Allah that they did not say. Yet, they did utter blasphemy; and denied the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. And, after having converted to Islam, they have become infidels; a people who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. And they desired deeply for that which they could not reach and have. They were resentful for Allah and His Messenger had enriched the believers with the blessings of Allah. Should they repent for their sins, it would be better for them. should they desist, Allah will punish them in this world and in Akhirat [Afterlife] with a painful punishment. And there will be no helpers, guides nor guardians for them on the Earth.

75And some of them swore by Allah, saying: “Should Allah bestow upon us His blessings, we will surely give charity and be among the righteous”.

76And when Allah bestowed upon them His blessings, they became stingy and turned away and refused.

77And finally, Allah punished them for they broke their promises and lied, planting within their hearts the hypocrisy that would remain within their hearts until they would meet Him.

78,79Surely, those among them who accuse the believers who contribute voluntarily to Sadaqah and are unable to give more than their capacity and then mock them; do they not know that Allah surely knows their secrets and that which they whisper and that Allah surely is the Most Knowing of all that is unknown? Allah will mock them. and for them will be a painful punishment.

80It is same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or not. No matter if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them. this is because they disbelieved Allah and His Messenger. Allah will never guide a people who have gone astray from the righteous path.

81Those who were left behind/did not participate the war rejoiced over that they stayed sitting as opponents of the Messenger of Allah and disliked to make their best efforts for the cause of Allah with their wealth and lives, and also said: “Do not set out for war under such a heat”. Say: “The Fire of Jahannah [Hell] will be hotter”. If only they could comprehend.

82And let them laugh less and suffer much for the punishment of their sins.

Division: 709

83Should Allah return you to a group from among them and they ask you for permission to set out, say: “You will never set out with me anymore. And you will never fight the enemy along with me. Surely, you preferred to sit during the first fight. Now be among those who are left behind!”.

84And do not support for any of them who has died and do not stand and pray over his tomb. Surely, they are infidels; a people who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] and His Messenger is the true messenger. And they have died astray from the righteous path.

85Do not envy their wealth and children. Allah intends to punish them in this world with them and let them die hard while being infidels; a people who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].

And they preferred to be among those who were left behind. And their hearts were sealed. So, they could not reason and understand.

88But the Messenger and the believer beside him made their best efforts with their wealth and lives. And to them will belong all that is good. And their condition will never decline and they will succeed.

89Allah has prepared for them gardens of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise], underneath of which rivers flow, to abide therein eternally. This is a great salvation.

90Those who demanded Bedouin Arabs to apologize came to ask for permission. And those who had lied to Allah and His Messenger remained sat. a painful punishment will soon touch the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] among them.

91,92There is no sin upon the weak, the ill and those who have nothing to spend and also those who go back crying for they could not find anything to spend in the path of Allah and after you tell them, “I could not find anything to let you ride” when they come to you to ask you to ride them, as long as they are sincere for Allah and His Messenger. There is no way against those who do good deeds. Allah is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.

93The accusation is only against those who ask you for permission although they are wealthy. They preferred to remain back with those who were left behind. And Allah sealed their hearts. Therefore, they do not know.

94When you return to them, they will apologize to you. Say: “Do not apologize. We will never believe you. Allah has given us important news about you”. The Allah and His Messenger will conclude the matter for you. And then you shall be returned to Allah, the Knower of the unseen and the seen. Then He will inform you about that which you did.

95When you return to them, they will swear by Allah so you may keep your distance from them. So leave them alone. Surely, they are impure, unclean. And their final destination will be Jahannah [Hell] as the recompense of their earnings.

96They swear by you so you may be pleased with them. should you be pleased with them, know that Allah will never be pleased with those people who have gone astray from the righteous path.

97Bedouin Arabs are more severe in disbelieving the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] and infidelity; and they are more inclined towards being unaware of the limits of that which Allah has revealed to His Messenger. Allah is the Most Knowing, the Best in principle.

98And some of the Bedouin Arabs considers that which they spend for the good of the public is a debt paid forcibly and hope for trouble to come upon you. –Upon them may be that evil trouble!- And Allah is the Most Hearing, the Most Knowing.

12

Page 13: 113 surah at-tawbah (the repentance)

99And some of the Bedouin Arabs do believe in Allah and the day of Akhirat [Afterlife] and assume that what they spend will return as close relations before Allah and support of the Messenger. Open your eyes! Surely, it will bring them closer. Allah will soon admit them into His mercy. Surely, Allah is the Most Forgiving of the sins of His servants, the One Who does not punish them and the Possessor of Abundant Forgiveness and Vast Mercy.

100And the forerunners among the Muhajirun [Those who emigrated from Mecca to Medina] and Ansar [Residents of Medina who helped Muhajirun] and those who followed them in doing good deeds; Allah was pleased with them and they were pleased with Allah. And Allah has prepared for them the gardens of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise], underneath of which rivers flow, to abide therein eternally. This is a great salvation.

101And beside you are hypocrites from among the Bedouin Arabs. And among the residents of Medina are those who have become accustomed to hypocrisy. You do not know them. But We know them. we will punish them twice then they shall be returned to a great punishment.

102And there others who have confessed their sins. And they have confused a righteous deed with an evil one. So Allah may accept their repentances. Surely, Allah is the Mot Forgiving of the sins of His servants, the One Who does not punish them and the Possessor of Abundant Forgiveness and Vast Mercy.

103Take Sadaqah from their wealth so you may purify them with their charity. And support them. surely, your support is peace upon them. Allah is the Most Hearing, the Most Knowing.

104Do they not know that Allah accepts repentances of His servants, takes Sadaqa and that Allah is the Most Accepting of repentance, the One Who gives chance to repent, the Most Merciful?

105And say: “Do what you can! Allah, His Messenger and the believers will see your deeds. And you shall be returned to Allah, the Most Knowing of the unseen and the seen. Then He will inform you about your deeds”.

106And the others who are being held for the command of Allah. He will either punish them or accept their repentances. And Allah is the Most Knowing, the Best Law-Maker.

107And those who build masjid to harm, blaspheme; consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb the Possessor of Abundant Forgiveness and Vast Mercy, sow discord among the believers and watch out for those who waged war against Allah and His Messenger before; strove to corrupt swear: “We did not wish for other than the best”. And Allah testifies that they are certainly liars.

108Do not stand/serve within that masjid forever! And those masjids that are built to surrender under the guardianship of Allah during the first day are more suitable for you to serve. Within it the men who favor purification. And Allah likes those who purify themselves.

109So, is the one who has laid the foundation on submission under the guardianship of Allah and pleasure of Him or the one who has laid the foundation on the edge of an abyss and then roll down into Jahannah [Hell] with it? And Allah will never guide those who do wrong; act against their own good by associating others with Allah.

110Unless their hearts are shattered, the foundation they have laid will remain a doubt in their hearts and will nor perish. And Allah is the Most Knowing, the Best Law-Maker.

111,112Surely, Allah has purchased from those believers who repent, worship, praise, emigrate, acknowledge the oneness of Allah, surrender and prostrate, command the good that is accepted by all, forbid the evil deeds, preserve the limits of Allah their lives in exchange for Jannah [Heaven/Paradise]. They fight for the cause of Allah; then they die and kill. This is the true promise of Allah that is contained in the Torah, the bible and the Qur’an. and who else is more faithful to his promise? Then, rejoice over the exchange. And this is the great salvation. And give to the believers the good tidings!

113,114There will be no forgiveness for those who associate others with the Prophet and the believers, even their relatives, after it was clear to them that they are the Companions of the Jahannah [Hell]. And Abraham’s request for forgiveness to

his father was because of a promise he had given to his father. And when it became clear to him that his father was an enemy of Allah, he turned away from him. Surely, Abraham was compassionate and patient.

115And Allah never averts a people after guiding them to the righteous path unless He makes clear to them that which would make them surrender under His guardianship. surely, Allah is the All Knowing.

116No doubt that Allah is the only possessor of the dominion of the Heavens and the Earth. He gives life and He takes lives. There are no helpers, guides or guardians from among His subordinates.

117Surely, Allah has bestowed repentance upon Prophet and the Muhajirun [Emigrants] and Ansar [Residents of Medina], who followed him in the most difficult hour, when the hearts of a group from among them almost inclined. Then He accepted their repentances. Surely, He is the Most Compassionate over them, the Most Merciful.

118And He accepted the repentances of the three people who were left behind. Insomuch as the Earth seemed cramped to them despite its great width, and their souls were under stress. And they firmly believed that the only way to escape from Allah is to seek refuge in Him. Then Allah bestowed upon them repentance and then accepted their repentances. Surely, Allah is the Most Accepting of repentances, the One Who gives chance to repent, the Most Merciful.

119O you who have believed! Surrender under the guardianship of Allah and be among the righteous.

120,121It was not appropriate for the residents of Medina and the Bedouin Arabs living nearby to lag behind the Messenger of Allah and care for themselves before him. And that is because every thirst, every fatigue and every starvation that may hit in the path of Allah will agitate the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb,

for every place they set foot on and every victory they gain against the enemy there is a deed decreed upon them,

15

for every expenditure that make for the cause of Allah, small or large, and every valley they pass, a reward from Allah that is better than their deeds is decreed upon them. surely, Allah will not let the rewards of those who do good deeds get lost.

122It was not appropriate for the believers to set out all together to take precautions. Then, should a group from each class of them have set out to get deep knowledge in the religion, to warn people when they turned to them?

123O you who have believed! Fight the deniers who pose danger and treat them harshly. And surely, know that Allah is with those who are under His guardianship.

124And when a Surah is revealed, a man from among them says: “Which of you has that Surah that has just been revealed increased in faith?”. But as for those who have believed; the Surah that has just been revealed has increased them in faith; reinforced them and they are continuously given good tidings.

125And as for the ill-hearted; ill-minded; it has added filth upon filth to their evil. And they will have died as infidels; a people who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].

126Do they not see that they are tested every year with a miserable event or two? Then they do not repent and take no lessons.

127When a Surah is revealed, some of them look at the others: “Does anyone see you?”. Then they turn away and go. Allah has averted their hearts for they are truly a people who do not understand.

128Surely, there has certainly come to you a Messenger from among you who grieves upon you when you are in distress, who is concerned over you, who is very compassionate, who makes your affairs convenient, who is very merciful.

129Should they turn away despite this, say: “Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but Him. I rely only unto Him for my affairs. He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of the Great Throne”.

404 The greatest Hajj was the one the Prophet participated and managed in person.

405 Due to technical and semantic reasons, we rearranged this passage differently than the Official Mushaf. For detailed information, see Tabyeen al-Qur’an.

406 Hunayn is a vast valley that is located between Mecca and Ta’if, in the Tihama Region. After the conquest of Mecca, Muslims and the Hawazin people who associate others with Allah fought the Battle of Hunayn in this valley.

407 The term Nesi (deceit through postponement) expresses the refraining of Arabs from following the haram [forbidden] months and their efforts to degenerate them.

408 In these Ayat, Muslims are reproached, behaviors of the infidels and the pleasure seekers are condemned and Muslims are instructed to make their best efforts in the path of Allah with their wealth and lives and without making any excuses, under any condition, harsh or insignificant.

The Battle of Tabuk mentioned within this passage (Tabuk is the name of a fertile area with abundant water sources and date palms that is located between Medina and Damascus) was a military expedition initiated in 9 AH from Medina toward Damascus with the intention to fight the 40.000 man Byzantium army. To fully comprehend this subject, at least encyclopedic level information on the Battle of Tabuk should be obtained.
