Who Are You In 30-Seconds or Less?

In 30-Seconds or Less

Presented by Tanya White-Earnest

Agenda

• What is an “Elevator Speech”?

• The four essential elements of a great elevator speech

• Creating a “Tag Line”

• Creating your “commercial”

In today’s webinar we will discuss:

What’s an

“elevator

speech”?

• Overview of your skills, experience, strengths, accomplishments and goals

– Personal Commercial

– 30 Second Commercial

• Used to introduce yourself to a potential employer, an interviewer, in a cover letter, or at networking events

– Employment possibilities

– Internship opportunities

Why do you

need one?

• You run out for a quick bite to eat and while waiting you meet someone who could be a connection for the job you are seeking – but you don’t have a resume with you. . .

• You go to your child’s play/game/performance, etc. and another parent is there that could connect you with your dream job, but you don’t have a resume with you. . .

• You happen to meet someone at a networking event AFTER you have already given out all your resumes. . .

• In casual conversation, someone asks “so what do you do?”

POLL QUESTION

Have you developed an effective elevator speech?

Yes/No

Four Essential

Elements

• Complete – gives a complete overview of who you are and what you bring to the table that is of value (interesting) to the listener

• Concise – Focused on what the listener needs to know to make a decision

• Composed – not something you make up as you go along, be prepared!

• Compelling – makes them want to know more

Supporting the 4

Essential

Elements

• Who are you – education, work, personality?

• What problems do you solve?

• What do you love about what you do?

• What unique contribution have you made recently (and thus can make to the new organization)?

• Where have you contributed?

• What impact have you had?

Tips

• Relate to the person you are speaking with:

– Use something you know about them/company

– Seek to be memorable

– Be engaged and enthusiastic

– Create a call to action

• Keep it short, simple, and sweet

– 25-30 Seconds

– 80-90 words/8-10 sentences

Tips

• Grab their attention right away

– Choose language that paints a vivid picture

– Focus on what’s in it for them

• Talk about what you offer them/company – I offer... provide... supply... create... produce... analyze... diagnose... prepare...

plan... design... develop... compose... construct... build... engineer... implement... install... fix... correct... improve... organize... facilitate... coordinate... manage... work with... consult... advise... solve... help... show... teach... train... support...

• And your impact – I was able to drive. . . impact. . . effect. . . save. . . implement. . . deliver. . .

Tips

• Tailor your commercial to the industry, company, “listener” (when possible)

– Use what you learned in your research

– Touch their “pain point”

• Show them how you’ve done it in the past!

– Provide a solid, concrete example of how you have used specific skills (those needed in the job you want) in the past

– Start with a strong “tag line”

POLL QUESTION

Do you use a “tag line” to brand yourself?

Yes/No

Why Tag Line

Work

Who do these tag lines refer to? (type answer in the question box)

• You’re in good hands with _________

• Melts in your mouth, not in your hands.

• Got ________?

• The ultimate driving machine.

• What’s in your wallet?

• The happiest place on earth.

Let’s Practice

Take a moment to develop a “tag line” for yourself:

• Memorable and Repeatable

• Short – About 7 words

• Concise – If they read it on your introduction card, will they know what you do and the value you offer

without it having to be explained?

• Convey your unique value to the employer – Verizon “Can you hear me now? Good” (most reliable coverage, AT&T/T-Mobile)

• Show your personality – Does it evoke an emotional response/“pull them in”?

• Establish your brand

Enhance Your

Pitch

Hi, my name is ________________ and I am a comptroller with over 15 years of experience in finance and accounting. I am results oriented, solution focused, and able to save your company money. I have an accounting degree from Big Name School and an MBA from Trident University International. I would love to talk to you about the comptroller position with your company.

I was working on a project I’m particularly proud of as VP of finance for a company where the drivers were charging a lot of overtime and eating up company profits. I found a vendor and implemented a technology solution that documents driver activity so the supervisors could hold them accountable for hours worked. This saved the company $1.6 million with no impact on customer satisfaction and no loss of jobs. My name is __________, and I am interested in a position as a comptroller.
