Employability is about more than your technical skills. Its about making sure you have the "right stuff" in three critical areas.

The say a picture tells a 1000 words. I have chosen 6 pictures to tell the story of the current global work place.

On this slide you see 8 pictures they say a picture is worth a 1000 words so let me briefly take thru how each one is related todays program.

The first 5 economic and organizational realities

Think Globally the world is now a very connected place. What happens in Asia or Africa directly impacts every other country . It means no company is just local anymore. We have to act here in the UAE but we have to keep an awareness of world event.

Squeeze we have all felt the squeeze of the world wide recession of 2008 and we live with the aftermath. You are fortunate in the Etisalat has worked hard to minimize the impact of the financial squeeze and has done its best to keep its keep developing its workforce despite trying times.

Competition increased, harder, more players, smaller margins, increased concern for productivity and profit

Flatter organizations- organizations require each level of mgmt. to be closer to the action and to guide and supervise larger teams. This translates into fewer steps or positions in organizational charts.

New organization structures the shamrock core staff, outsourced vendors, and contingent or temporary contributors

So, what is The impact on workers, like you and me ?

We work is more project based we come together do something create a outcome and realize a benefit for the organization and its customers, then we do something other tasks.

We have to collaborate more collaborate means we labor together we all contribute and have accountability for the final product or service. We work across depts., units and sometimes with others outside the company.

It means that in our careers will are likely to wear many hats, have different roles and different assigned roles. Research in careers and work across the world, shows that workers today are likely to have 5-10 different positions in their life and may even change career 3-5 times. It means that we have to keep re-inventing who we are. (example I have had a retail management career, several non profit management roles, 8 years in higher education and now 6 years as a consultant, and Im preparing for my next shift ( which is NOT retirement).

So lets take a closer look at what career development means - to me and to you

Because of many of the factors we discussed, flatter organizations, re-definitions of jobs, etc, career progression can longer be viewed as the road to promotion. Career paths are varied, and can take many shapes, or trajectories.8Many Different Career Paths9

Skills Enhancement is the Priority10

Career development is about enhancing, or growing your skills. Its like finding and putting pieces together to that you can build a whole puzzle of ways in which you can apply knowledge, skills and attributes , or your competencies to work tasks. Its your employability quotient or what makes an employer want to hire you... And keep you.

Career progression is the movement through various job roles and assignments. Notice the picture. ( point to pic) The arrows go in several directions not just up...

This means that career progression can have several paths. Up , lateral, expanded roles, or roles in other units. These movement is a combination of several factors, your interests, your capabilities and the current business needs and types of positions available.

What does this mean for you? It means that you must focus on your employablity quotient

General skills these are the set of skills cut across all fields, disciplines and job roles. The ability to communicate, to problem solve, to manage yourself, your time and your deliverables. The ability to analyze needs, and appropriate action, and connect your work to the goals of your dept. and to organizations business objectives.

Subject depth relates to your technical knowledge and abilities. How much depth do you have in the body of knowledge related to your work in engineering, or graphics, finance, HR, supply chain management etc.

Corporate skills these relate to your ability to navigate and play nice in the organization. Are you a team player, do you adhere to the business culture norms of your company, when the client meets you you ARE etisalat to them, have you developed a good network across the dept and the organization that helps you get the job done when the going gets rough? Do you handle challenges with tact, diplomacy and patience? How adaptable and flexible are you willing to be?

Most companies around the world see these attributes - adaptability and flexibility among the most important hiring and promotion traits.
