==============================

We're looking for employees that are hardworking and have a passion for food. To apply, print out the application below and bring it in to the store. http://www.elranchomarketiga.com/downloads/IGA_job_application.pdf

El Rancho Market IGA 8901 North 19th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85021 Phone: 602-870-3600 Hours: 6 am - 11 pm, daily NOTE: Have you been convicted of a

felony in the last 7 years? Yes/No If yes, please explain fully… (Note: A conviction does not necessarily prohibit employment.)

We have seen a difference recently in the number of resumes submitted for open positions. The long-term unemployed, who had previously given up on finding work, are trying again, and others, who had been reluctant to move from their current employer, are starting to test the waters. However, even if you are highly qualified, it can still be tough to land an interview for that great new job. How do you get your resume put into the “Yes” pile? We suggest the following:

Exactly what does this business owner or hiring manger want in a successful candidate? What skills, experience and degrees do they list as mandatory? What do they list as preferred? If you can’t check off the mandatory requirements, or at least most of them, it is doubtful that you will get an interview. While you may have a PhD or MBA, if you don’t have a background in construction or retail, you probably don’t have the right experience to work the plumbing aisle at Lowe’s.

If you are seriously interested in a job, it is worth your time to rewrite your resume to highlight the particular skills and experience you have that match the job posting. Employers often spend only a few seconds looking at each resume,

searching for specific words that match their most important requirements. If your resume reads as if it belongs to a different job opening, it is going in the “No” pile. At a minimum, make sure that your objective matches the job title. Don’t state that your goal is to find a marketing position when you are applying to an office management job. Similarly, if you have the specific experience or degree that the job posting asks for, make sure that it is easy to find on your resume.

The 30 to 60 minutes you spend across the table from your interviewers might be the most important time you spend this year. So going into this crucial meeting without knowing exactly what you want to communicate may leave you ineffectively grasping for words. It's not enough to anticipate tough questions -- that's a given. If you want to avoid interview embarrassment, you need to rehearse clear talking points and find ways to insert these into the conversation at appropriate opportunities. "Most people enter into an interview prepared to answer questions," says Amy Morin, licensed clinical social worker and author of " 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do." "But interviewers often don't ask the questions that help an interviewee shine. It's important to have a clear list of talking points that highlight your achievements and qualifications. Highlight those talking points throughout the interview, and create opportunities to discuss your main talking points."

There are few things that make you look worse during an interview than being called on to answer a question when your thoughts are clearly elsewhere. Staying focused and present throughout the grilling process is integral to appearing on your game. Leave your personal life at the door when you enter the room, and channel all your energy into following and participating in the dialogue. While it's important to get your talking points in, avoid concentrating so hard on your own messages that you miss what you're being asked.

Are you applying for a job with this employer because you're really interested in the company and the role, or are you just desperate to be working again? No matter what your answer is to that question, you'd be wise to show a specific

interest in the organization and responsibilities during your interview. Asking no questions of the interviewer can signal a red flag to employers about your general lack of interest. And asking the wrong questions can be even worse if you're trying to make a good impression. "The questions a candidate asks are really a window into what is important to them for the employer," says Ed Nathanson, talent adviser at CloudLock. "As an example, if a candidate starts asking questions about standard working hours, that can be perceived as a red flag to some employers about a clock-puncher mentality."

Instead, Nathanson suggests keeping your queries focused in directions that show interest in learning more about the role, business or career path possible within the company. "These questions show interest, motivation, and smarts -- all things a prospective employer likes to see." "In my experience, the majority of job seekers are so primed to sell themselves that they aren't actually present in the interview itself," says Amanda Mitchell, founder of Our Corporate Life LLC. "They're already listening for the cues that will allow them to deliver their two-minute pitch. Besides potentially missing important information, the interviewee can come across as self-serving and overly rehearsed."

Many job seekers assume they're off duty until they're behind closed doors with their actual interviewers. But Mario Almonte, managing partner at Herman & Almonte Public Relations, suggests that impression is false. "Your interview begins the moment you walk in the door and sit down in the reception area," he says. "Assume everyone is your interviewer, including the receptionist. Everything about you

needs to project professionalism. If you're slouching, texting and laughing at things you're seeing on your cell phone, it detracts from your image as a professional. If you do anything odd, it will get noticed -- and it could cost you the job."

It may seem like a no-brainer to arrive on time to any and every interview, even if the company you're meeting with has a more casual work environment. But in a 2013 survey by the Center for Professional Excellence at York College of Pennsylvania, nearly 30 percent of the of human resource professionals surveyed noted that having candidates show up late for an interview was the most common mistake they see during the hiring process. "There may be times when a late arrival is out of your control, but the last thing an interviewer wants to start off hearing is a list of excuses," says Matthew Randall, executive director of the CPE. "Candidates should always do their best to expect the unexpected and allow enough time to accommodate travel delays that might occur." Randall adds that if something comes up that is truly out of your control, it's better to contact your interviewer as soon as possible to explain the situation and explore the possibility of rescheduling, rather than to show up late and waste the employer's time.

HIRING 20+ CONSTRUCTION LABORERS

START TOMORROW!! Don't wait! Positions are First Come, First Served!

Skilled, semi-skilled and skilled construction laborers needed ASAP! APPLY AT: EASTRIDGE WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS 2113 S. 48TH ST, STE 108, TEMPE, AZ 85282 (SE Corner of 48th St - Broadway, across from Whataburger) NOTE: This is a long way to go and it might be good to call first to see if they can use you and your skills and make an appointment to go over to see them. Call them @ 602-437-3355. Remember calling is never the way to go if I really want a job. Any employer who would hire you sight unseen is a job that is not a job you really want. But, in this case, call and always start your conversation with listing your skills and then say “Oh! My name is _____”

THERE IS A HIRING PALOOZA COMING (RETAIL) REQUIREMENTS…

W

• MOST COMPANIES START HIRING AT 16 YEARS OLD • MANY ENTRY-LEVEL RETAILS JOBS REQUIRE NO EXPERIENCE BUT REQUIRE

GOOD PEOPLE SKILLS, PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE AND THAT HAVE AN INTEREST IN WHAT THE STORE SELLS.

• CASH HANDLING AND/OR GOOD MATH SKILLS ARE A PLUS – ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE A CASHIER. Not required though.

• WALKING, TALKING AND BREATHING…WILLING TO SHOW UP EVERY DAY – ON TIME

• AVAILABLE TO WORK MORNINGS AND/OR DAY SHIFTS – THEY DO NOT USUALLY NEED YOU LATE IN THE DAY, IN THE EVENING OR MANY TIMES ON THE WEEKENDS. OPEN AVAILABLE IS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY AND HAVING IT MAKES YOU GOLDEN AND HIREABLE.

Didn’t they just finish hiring their summertime players? YA! But, guess what? Many of those students and teenagers have already fallen by the way side, took off on vacation, got grounded or lost their driver’s license. Even though the employers are not geared up to start hiring for next month’s coming back-to-school blood bath, why not get a head start and go to the head of the coming line by going out to introduce yourself.

That’s right! We are telling you to put some clean clothes on and head out to introduce yourself. Wouldn’t you rather be the only one waiting to talk to someone about upcoming opportunities instead of scrambling about in a line that goes out the door?

• You seriously need to prepare yourself for each stop and know more about the company than the manager.

• Know their products lines and what they sell. If a clothing store, knowing your fashions and designers is highly valued and interesting.

• Know what they hire and be prepared to illustrate to them that you are that person…Prep! Prep! Prep!

• Wear clean clothes – you go with what you have. Worry about actually dressing for work and clothes only after they hire you not now.

• Go with an excited attitude, interest in the company and expressing a desire to work for them. Leave kids and your life’s problems on the door step before you leave. If you must take your kids, take a friend to watch them why you go in. Nothing says “I am going to be late…I have issues with daycare…” more than having kids in tow.

• Do not go out on Mondays, Fridays or before or after a major holiday as there will be no one to talk to you.

• Knowing what time to go is critical. Never go anywhere during lunch and really expect to have some stop everything to talk to you. You need to hit them when they are not busy and would have time to talk with you (if they take a liking to you) In retail and the service industry, the times are pretty well set to 10-11 AM or 2-4 PM.

• Have a game plan unless you are the Duke of BS. Know what to say and more importantly what not to say is equally critical.

• Never walk in and ask “are you hiring?” This is a “yes” or “no” answer and will be an easy way of blowing you off.

• Never walk in and ask to talk to a manager. This is the nuclear option at most locations as the need for a manager means that the sales associates have failed in their job to keep people away from the manager. Once you ask for a manager you have been profiled as a troublemaker or complainer and the rest of the conversation will be stressed. Not a good way to get them to like you?

• When you see someone who isn’t busy, go up and ask them to help you find something and start a conversation about the store and ask them “what is it like to work here?” Go from there. Somewhere in that conversation you ask “would ANYONE have a few minutes to talk to me about UPCOMING OPENING?”

• Not a people person? This is probably not a good job choice for you. But, you can simplify this process (less successful approach) by walking up the customer service desk and say “I just moved into the neighborhood and I was wondering if ANYONE would have a few minutes to talk to me about upcoming openings {without taking a breath} because I have _______(insert your specific skill set both hard and soft skills that match up with what they hire).

• DO NOT BE SHY! Every day, we see skilled people lose jobs due to this. If you are afraid of them, you will run and hide from customers.

Resumes (work histories) are not really necessary unless you want to work at Macys. In fact a resume can kill you if it does not specifically show retail experience because it will bring to the employer’s attention that you experience is in other areas and you will spend the entire interview trying to explain why you don’t want or can’t be an office clerk anymore. Again, they hire 16-year-old don’t they? Ever seen a 16-year-old’s resume? It is a blank piece of paper. If a resume was important, they wouldn’t be hiring a 16-year-old. Instead be prepared to impress them with what you know about them, what they do and what makes them special. This type of presentation mixed with open availability or a part-time schedule where they can use you as a floater mixed with those clean clothes and your sense of “it would be really neat to work here” attitude will get you any entry level job. Now if you have a lot of specific experience in retail and/or the service industry, do not apply for entry level jobs because you will (again) spend the whole interview trying to explain to the employer why you do not worthy of a more senior opening. If you want a more senior job stop here because this is NOT how you get those jobs (not at the entry store level). Second keys and assistant managers need to go back, research how the company (REALLY) recruits for these positions and who you need to get yourself in front of. The larger the company, the more you need to understand their process and this usually means bypassing the HR Office. The larger companies have specific recruiters (enteral or third party) to recruit and screen for management opening(s). Understand that there is no cookie cutter solution of cutting-n-pasting generically written resumes for this process and understanding that the process does require more work, paperwork and time to achieve. Here

applications and resumes MUST be very specifically matched to what the employer’s needs and standards are. Here technology (designed to ease the process) sometimes complicates the process. Recruiters don't always call back when they say they will. Job descriptions rarely tell the whole story about what the company is actually looking for. Shall I continue? But, sometimes, when a job search isn't going as planned, it has as much to do with you as it does external factors. Specifically, you not are taking this big, important process seriously enough. The good news here is that, once you identify where and how you're sitting down on the job, you can fix these issues. Let's take a look at a handful of the more common violations and how you can sidestep them.

If a skill or qualification was listed as "required" on a job description — and it's one that you don't have — don't be surprised if you're never contacted for an interview. Now, don't assume you're going to be flat-out dismissed without a required credential (unless, of course, it's something essential to the role). However, you can't expect the software that scans your resume to flag you as a "yes" if it has been programmed to reject everyone who doesn't list that specific skill.

If you are missing a mandatory requirement and still truly want to take a run at this application, you should find ways to buddy up with someone on the inside of the organization. (Here are a few tips.) You will need the opportunity to explain where you're coming from in applying for this job and how you can deliver in spite of that lacking credential.

If you selectively paid attention to the instructions on what this company wants you to submit, or how it wants you to apply, you may well strike out by failing to provide something specific that the organization has

asked for. Worse, you could be tossed into the "no" pile simply because the reviewer figures you can't follow simple instructions. (And yes, I recognize that job applications are rarely "simple.")

In any instance that you're applying for a job via online application, pay attention to the instructions, and follow them to a T. Better yet, cultivate an "in" with someone influential at that firm, and forward your materials (resume, cover letter) directly to that person.

If your job search can be summed up in its entirety by "fill out online application, wait for however long it takes," then you shouldn't (at all) be surprised if your phone isn't lighting up with job interview requests. You must realize that you and a gajillion other people are all trying to shove your way through the front door of the company when you apply for a job online — at the same exact time. And for every single job you pursue, someone is sidestepping the online application, then finding and endearing themselves to the right people on the inside. And it's these very people who will typically be invited in first.

After you apply for a job, at a minimum, zip over to LinkedIn, do a quick people search, and see if you have or can cultivate, an "in" at that organization. (Sensing a theme here?) Get on the radar of the people already working there. Every time.

In spite of what anyone has ever told you, quantity does not typically trump quality in the job search. Machine-gun spray methods rarely work. You're almost always better off with a single, well-executed rifle shot. For every job you apply for, at least a few of the candidates in the mix are going to make absolute, perfect sense to the reviewer. If you're blasting out 15 resumes a day? It's nearly impossible for you to compete with people who are delivering clear, customized, "I'm just what you've asked for" resumes and cover letters.

Big stores need more people, they are going to hire more people but, everyone knows this and they are going to apply at them. Little stores are going to hire a smaller

number of people, they are more difficult to find (they don’t run $100K ads) and hiring is more based upon you going in person and introducing yourself. The downside to big stores is an impersonal, hard to navigate online application, a vast ocean of applicants, no one to help you if you have a question and assembly line interviews. Little stores require that you come to them, introduce yourself and usually fill out an application. The downside at the small store is that everything is based upon how well you introduce yourself and if they take a liking to you. Friendly, bubbly and people with a lot of social skills do well in a little store setting while, people who are more information-based (remember a lot of facts) do well at the big stores – where there is much to learn and remember do to all the inventory that they have. Consider this…for every Super Target there are nine little stores….94% of all Arizona businesses employ ten people or less. So if you want to have a lot of choice and are a bubbly person, go little and if you are not so bubbly but have good memory skills…go big!

At entry level, there is not a lot of difference in salaries between big and little stores. The going rate is from minimum wage to about$8.50/9.00 per hour. Most companies have insurance in name only (high deductibles

$5-10K) so don’t make a choice based upon insurance. If you don’t have $5-10K to pay your deductible…then you have no insurance…you still need to get better or die…

Not a good idea. Companies are filling FT/PT positions right now because of back-to-school sales and that their work force is leaving. If you are hired now and if you are a real dependable, hard-working employee…why would they fire you at the end of Back-to-School only to rehire you for the holidays…THEY WOULDN’T! If you are still working at the end of the holidays…you are not going anywhere. So, the best time to secure a position that will become permanent in retail is right now… “But, I already applied several weeks…months ago!” The best thing to do is re-apply because your old application (if it still there) is buried at the bottom of all the newer applications and they are pulling from the top. They pull from the top because they know that these people are available now and that they are looking for work NOW…Not six months ago…

Last week the Used Job Shack ran a special job book issue on Big Store Retail and Back-to-School. This is a good reference tool to use because of the “Used Job Shack Insider” Columns for each store. The Insider is a collect of people who have already gone to the interview, been hired and have selected to share the experience with you…aka…what questions were asked…what you need to know for the interview and/or just the structure of the hiring decision. The great thing about the Used Job Shack is that they are online and you can go read or download this issue for FREE! http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Auntie-Sue-Uncle-Bobs-USED-4550443?trk=myg_ugrp_ovr

Most of the frequently asked questions are in last week’s edition but, here is something that Uncle Bob said to throw in…at no additional charge! In selecting a company to work for, review and consider the following: • I have an interest in the things that they sell. • They are nice, friendly people who treat me well. • They are flexible with my work hours or days. • This is a place I would enjoy working for a long time. • The store is easy to get to or to get home from. • Are there future opportunities to advance or not?

DO NOT MAKE A DECISION BASED SOLELY UPON SALARY…YOU WILL BE SORRY IF YA DO! ==============================================

There is not a real GPS System that will help you identify little stores…but, then there is.

REMEMBER ALL OF OUR PREACHING ABOUT LOCALIZING YOUR JOB SEARCH? Really…that is a shame as it would really help right now.

For the benefit of all our new readers, your local GPS System to find little stores is and will be the phone book (for all you die-hard, old school seniors). If you didn’t ride in on a dinosaur, use the online editions…including www.yellowpages.com TYPE IN “RETAIL” OR “STORE” AND THEN YOU ZIP CODE. This will give you a list of every retail store within 5-10-15 miles of your home location. Also remember the common sense of the fact that the closer you are to your home…the closer you are to a job…employer like to hire locals…!

This Job Search list gives you the name of the company, the address and a phone number. Good so far…but, now what? Depending upon the industry; your next step could be to call each company utilizing (modifying to your own info) our suggested scripts or it might be important to go in person to introduce yourself (with one of our suggested scripts). Different industries require different contact methods. The restaurant, fast food or retail employers will be best reached between 2-4 PM – which is their downtime and when they are more likely to have the time to talk to you. With other businesses; the best time is 10AM to Noon.

Small business owners put much value on face-to-face meetings and put even more value upon in a person who was interested enough to present themselves in person. The go in person approach shows that you are motivated and that you are really interested in working for them. Calling is less time consuming; you can screen many more companies and it is easier but…you must realize that without the proper script; you might be wasting time and energy.

===============================

Use the phone to call each and use the following script: “I live here in the neighborhood and I have _______years working in _______________ (food/retail/warehouse/etc…) and I was wondering if I could stop by later today and talk to someone about UPCOMING JOB OPENINGS*? By the way, my name is _______________. ” If they have an opening(s)…write the info down, get dressed "ready for work" and go over to introduce yourself...Explain to them why they should hire ya! * Use this phrase and it will get you a lot more invites because you are not depending upon them having a current opening and remember that, truly, many jobs didn’t exist until they took a liking to ya!

BEING HIRED DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL WORK!

MANY FACTORS TIE INTO YOU GETTING HOURS WITH THEM…also, know that they require an expensive uniform requirement for banquet services – tuxedo pants and etc.… some people with open availability and their own transportation can do good by them… If you ride the bus, can’t work certain hours or have concerns about end of shift, stay home and do not go apply, they will hire you but, you may never work! If you match what they are looking for, then check them out as they do have a ton of short term employment. The more dependable you are, the harder you work…the more they will over ya!

Courtesy Clerk Interview I applied online. The process took a week

Interview: I already knew somebody who worked under the store director, so it was already pretty easy for me to get my foot in the door. It did my application online, went and saw the director the next day, but my application did not show up on their system (it takes a few days) so I came back 3 days later and basically we just had a conversation of "why do…

Interview Questions: • Have a brief version of what your schedule is. Instead of "all day this day, all

day that day, X am to X pm on this day, oh wait I’m not available that day, hold on let me think."

Front End/Courtesy Clerk Interview I applied online. The process took 3 weeks

Interview: I applied for the position online and was called back probably 3 weeks later for a interview that was scheduled for a week later at 3pm. I got there 10 minutes early and after waiting 5 minutes we started the interview. The interviewer was nice he basically read my application and made sure nothing had changed. He left the interview twice for a few mins a time. I don't believe it was a fair interview for me to explain what i can offer.. it seemed to me that they have already hired someone else before the interview. I was very excited to work there. I didn't have much of a interview. At the end of the interview i asked when should i be hearing back from you?. He said with in the next week. I didn't' even get a call back just a email informing me they had chosen someone who better qualifies for the position.

Interview Questions: There was no difficult questions really. Very short interview. =================================================================
