YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE EXCEPT UNEMPLOYMENT!

Page 3: The benefit of a good story1

You have heard and know that they ask you these questions at most interviews. You have been there at an interview and it is going great and you can already see yourself celebrating the new gig when they throw out a Star Question and it feels like you just hit a break wall doing 80 mph. You fall apart and you feel yourself crashing and burning. Been there…done that? Is there…are their solutions? Well Campers! The UJS will be working you forward with this in upcoming issues of the Used job Shack. Here is a general overview to the problem

and as we go forward we will string you along with useful tips, suggestions and INTEL…we have got to keep you reading…didn’t you know?

Tell me about a time when you went out of your way to help a customer. This trips you up by how they would define "go out of your way" and what will make you look good. Best thing to remember that you can expand this out to your real life as the answer does not need to be job related and you can draw from past experiences.

Tell me how you have dealt with an angry customer: Remember that most angry customers are angry because they believe that no one is listening to them. So the story starts at that point and then flows into how they left happy and still send you x-mas cards. The more pro interviewees might want to insert their beliefs on customer service and life. Tell me what you would do if you saw a co-worker stealing: You first must understand that this is an issue with this company and you must have a very unhuman response and be willing to send your grandma to prison for stealing three pieces of popcorn off the counter. To answer otherwise, you will be a part of the problem rather than the answer they were looking to hire. Short of being willing to hang shoplifter on the streetlight pole outside the store, you need to be a part of their loss prevention plan instead of a human being. Other questions will be focused on what the employer sees as their enteral problem(s) and are designed to tell them what your opinion is and to see if you are

Page 4: The benefit of a good story1

the solution... While these are not STAR QUESTIONS it is important to approach them in the same manner as the co-worker stealing... The result is the opportunity to talk about the impact you made. Give specifics and use numbers whenever possible. Show the employer that you do to have value and are worthy of them taking the risk on you. If the result of your story wasn’t entirely positive (which we don’t really recommend you using unless you are a masterful storyteller), state the negative outcome as well but try to illustrate how your actions mitigated the loss and improved the situation (a valuable skill in its self).

Stay Honest. Yes, the purpose of an interview is to get a job. But it’s also to determine if you’ll be a good fit. Your employer wants you to be happy and fit in. Statistically speaking, you’ll make a better employee if you do, and you’ll stay longer. Of course that’s what they want. But you’ll likely know early on if the company won’t be a good fit for you, and it can be hard to admit that. Whatever you do, stay honest with yourself and your potential employer. It’s the right thing to do.

Thoroughly Understand the Position Dig deep when inquiring what your day will look like. Ask for specific answers, so you can get a clear picture of your responsibilities. This will give you a better idea of the value of that position. Additionally, you should know the industry standard pay rate for the job.

Pretend You’re Buying a Car While going about your negotiation, think of it like you’re shopping for a car. But, instead, you’re shopping for a job. And instead of negotiating a price, you’re negotiating a salary. There are two key elements to car buying and finding a job: 1.Research - 2.Preventing yourself from getting taken advantage of…Be like the ninety percent of people who research a car online before going to a car lot, and do your research about an employer before going to the interview. At the same time, remember that you’re not actually getting a car. Don’t try to “win” the negotiation by milking the employer for all you can. Focus on the job first, and the salary second.

A long-coveted grocery store could be coming to downtown Phoenix. A grocery could be part of a new development project slated to be built at the Central Station transit hub at Van Buren Street and Central Avenue. Chicago-based Smithfield Properties LLC wants to build a $72 million, 34-story apartment tower on a city-owned parcel that now houses the transit hub. Smithfield principals have been telling real estate brokers and economic developers in private meetings that a grocery store may be inked for the ground-level retail component of the project, according

to an official familiar with the situation. A grocery store has long been desired for downtown Phoenix with more apartments and condos planned for the area and Arizona State University growing its downtown campus footprint to 11,500 students. There is speculation that Fry’s Food Stores Inc. could be the grocery looking at a downtown store. Fry’s is owned by Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) which has developed some adaptive reuse and urban setting stores in other markets. Fry’s spokeswoman Jo Ellen Lynn said the rumors of a downtown Fry’s are just rumors. “This is just a rumor,” she said. Smithfield principals did not respond to requests for comment. The city of Phoenix awarded Smithfield development rights, which include property tax breaks, last year…

NOTE: This shows the importance of following the business news on a regular basis. What did we learn here? First, we learned that the transit hub that we all use and love is going away – which will make going to and from downtown more difficult. More long term, we learned that there will be a major (a year-long or longer) construction project here in our backyard that will bring employment to hundreds of under employed construction and labor workers – and we know who the build is and that we can get a list of the construction companies that they will be using. Finally, there will be a better grocery choice than CVS in the downtown area – within walking distance from ASU (which will need up to 200 workers).

Based on skill and experience…

We need the best line cooks available! We are part of the Fez, Switch, Corduroy and Pizza People Pub family. We are hiring 4 cook staff! Part time and Full time available. Great loyal customers. Busy lunches, weekend brunches and late night dining. 1 Reference required, background check. Random drug testing. 420ok. APPLY IN PERSON ONLY 10AM-6PM Daily (CLOSED MONDAYS) at Corduroy Restaurant for ALL positions (2601 N Central Avenue) or Switch, right next door (2603 N Central). NOTE: OK Campers! This is it…this is all that the employer threw us as a bone. A lot of the needed details are missing and it becomes more difficult to prep. We must assume that at $12-17/Hr. they are looking for Pro cooks not rookies and that narrows the job pool considerably. They will be looking for specialists in their style of cooking. What is that? That is your prep work to find out by looking at their menu, their specials, and the website and even read their consumer reviews on www.yelp.com to have specific talking points at the interview. As a Pro you already know to do that. ============================================================= LAST GUY DIDN'T WORK OUT... Dishwashers, Cooks & Host/ess WEDNESDAY 17 JUNE 2015

Compensation: $9-$12hr (no mention of their normal $200 signing bonus this week) HMSHost is having open interviews and hiring for immediate openings tomorrow from 11am-1pm for dishwashers/utility, cooks and host/ess positions. We offer competitive pay, full-time schedules, excellent benefits, free uniforms and more.

Our interviews will be in Terminal 4 Baggage Claim Starbucks. If you are driving please park in the T4 parking structure and take the elevator to Level 1. Baggage claim is located on the south side on level 1. Once you get to Starbucks please look for the HMSHost sign and I will be there to get you signed in HMSHost operates many local restaurants within Sky Harbor International Airport including Chelsea's Kitchen, LGO, Blanco Tacos + Tequila, Modern Burger, Olive & Ivy, Sauce, Cowboy Ciao, Barrio Cafe and more. If you enjoy a challenging fast paced environment then this is the place for you. Please apply online at

www.hmshost.com/careers Apply before you come...if you can….as it speeds up the process… We offer a complete benefits package for all fulltime employees that includes health, vision, dental, life insurance; vacation, holiday and sick pay; pay increases every 6 months; free airport parking or a free Valley Metro Pass and many more benefits!

Dress to get hired here means that you wear clean clothes, a recent bath/shower as this employer is more concerned with your skills, abilities, availability, your motivation to work for them @ the airport than how well you look in a power suit or how killer your resume is.

Page 8: The benefit of a good story1

You need to bite the bullet on this if you want this job and really “GO OLD SCHOOL” after you apply online, get yourself spruced up in your best Clean Casual Clothes (Trim any facial hair or shave…they are nice people but, they are old school too) and go over to the interview and introduce yourself while asking them to pull your application. If you impress them with your personality, availability and your motivation, they will.

TIPSTER: You need to be able to successfully have a conversation about them, their history and why you would be a great candidate. They are not (in most cases) looking for the Iron Chef as they are looking for extremely people friendly staff that want to be there and are excite to learn new things including working at the Airport. You need to go over there with you “A” Game or do not waste the trip! The reason why you may want to do this can be found at www.hmshost.com

TIPSTER: You MAY not see the actual position posted on the website, apply to the closest one available THEN, when you go the Job Fair at terminal #4…(you are going over to the job fair, right?) have a list of the positions that you applied for. Tell this way “I was interest in _____ position @ _______but, I am open to other opportunities that might be open or that you feel that I would be a better fit?” TIPSTER: If you have not already been to ONET to properly pad your killer resume with key words, phrases and to insure that you are showing ALL of the skills and abilities you have…then REALLY do it and reform your resume to include all this…Unless, you got Old Lady Luck riding with you today… If she is…buy some lotto tickets coming back. http://www.onetonline.org/ 35-2015.00 COOKS, SHORT ORDER http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/5/35-2015.00?s=cook 35-3022.00 COUNTER ATTENDANTS, CAFETERIA, CONCESSION-COFFEE http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/12/35-3022.00?s=cook 35-9021.00 DISHWASHERS http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/11/35-9021.00?s=cook 41-2011.00 CASHIERS http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/3/41-2011.00?s=cashier%20fast%20food

Three years ago, next month, we started to hit the MSHOST Hiring Events and with that first group we took ten players. Nine of the ten were professional kitchen people and one was a young kid who claimed to have about three months of fast and furious Food Experience – although, I wouldn’t have sworn that to be true. The young kid had never flown in an airplane (local Greyhound Travel kid) and so he had never been to an airport either. We were at Terminal Three that has the First World War Biplane hanging from the ceiling. The plane blew him away and walking through the terminal, he looked like a kid who had just discovered Christmas and ice cream at the same time. He just couldn’t believe that the plane was real and that people really flew it.

At the Interview, the gang of nine pros did UMOM proud and presented, showcased their skills and years of experience when they were asked: “Why do you want to work for us at the airport?” To a person the HMSHOST Recruiters said: “Thank you very much, we will let you know…” Then our young kid with questionable experience was asked and his answer reflected that sense of animation and excitement that was so different from the gang of nine. He went on to say:

“WORK for you at the airport????” Why wouldn’t I want to work for you at the airport because this is the most exciting place that I have ever seen…You know they have a WW1 Airplane hanging from the ceiling! And so many interesting people…I have never seen so many people and it’s interesting to think about where they are going…you know I love working with people…I am kind of a people person and where could I ever get such a chance to work with them all?” He claimed that he didn’t but, I know he did get so carried away that he said “I am almost willing to pay you to let me work here!” Instead of thank you very much, he alone heard those golden words: “You are hired!” It was there they we understood that it was motivation, excitement and interest that gets you hired here because they are not looking for the Iron Chef…they will train you the cooking skills but, they can’t train you to like people.

Page 10: The benefit of a good story1

FINAL TIPSTER: Availability is a new issue here because the airport is a 24/7 operation and some actual opening may require shift work and they will question your ability to get to/from the airport. UMOM Campers have the advantage but, you must put it into play and introduce the fact that you live less than 10 minutes away from the Sky Harbor’s new Sky Rail terminal with the light rail (it runs almost 24/7). So the correct answer to the question of reliable transportation is: “Yes I do…it is called my two feet because I live ten minutes and away and could be here in less than 20 minutes anytime

you need me…I live in the neighborhood!” This is critical for you to say as we had several lose a job offer because they thought the recruiter was asking them if they had a car. Please memorize this script as the job you save might be the one they were going to offer you!

*** MUST HAVE THE AVAILABILITY THAT THEY NEED… OPEN AVAILABILITY PEOPLE GET HIRED FIRST ***
