Differences: Instructional design/adult learning theory basics
8
At your next job interview…
a) Sure, I’ve done that lots of times. No problem
b) The instructional materials I’ve written could easily be adapted to training. And I’m familiar with the principles of instructional design and adult learning. I believe I can do a really good job with that.
c) Doh!, I don’t know anything about training!
We also need the writer to create training materials for our
products. Do you have experience with that?”
9
Analysis first
When confronted with a workplace learning challenge, do the analysis first.
• What problem are you trying to solve?
• Is training the right answer?
• What kind of training is appropriate?
10
Is training even the right answer?

Everyone knows ADDIE
Analysis – Problem analysis, audience analysis, task analysis
Design – Selection of delivery methods, outline of learning events.
Development – Writing of materials, programming (if e-learning), testing
Implementation – Delivery of the learning solution
Evaluation – Assessment of results and improvement

50,000 Years of Instructional Design in a nutshell• Tell them
• Show them
• Let them try
• Repeat
If this does not work, or if you want to be part of the latest education fad, change the order of the steps until you find a combination that works.

Three Priorities for Effective Training:
• Ensure that learners are highly motivated to learn.
• Guide learners to appropriate content.
• Provide meaningful and memorable learning experiences.
- Michael Allen, Michael Allen’s Guide to E-Learning, 2001

Classroom materials
16
Recipe for a training guide
1 user guide
1 set of learning objectives
Classroom exercises (to taste)
1. Cut out all non-essentials from the user guide
2. Add learning objectives
3. Stir in exercises
4. Bake and serve hot
17
E-learning
18
What is e-learning?
Instruction delivered on a computer by way of disk, Internet, or intranet
Content relevant to learning objectives
Uses methods such as examples and practice
Builds new knowledge and skills
Uses media to deliver the content
Instructor-led (synchronous) or self-paced (asynchronous)
- Clark and Mayer, e-Learning and the Science of Instruction 2008
19
Ease into asynchronous e-learning
Experiment with free development tools or trial versions.
Develop… By doing this… Using a program you know or learn…
Tutorials Putting classroom training online
PowerPointAcrobat
Software Demos
Recording full-motion videos
Camtasia or Captivate
Interactive Tutorials
Adding interactivity and test scoring to your tutorials (create a storyboard first)

Presentation
22
Later in the interview…
a) Sure, I’ve done that lots of times. No problem.
b) I’ve done presentations at team meetings. That’s an area where I’d like the chance to improve my skills.
c) Imma scared!
Oh, I forgot to mention: sometimes you’ll need to fill in and teach the courses. You okay with
that?”

Training delivery skills
These are skills only come with training and – even more so – practice
• Presentation skills
• Facilitation skills
• Move from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side”
• Facilitate class interactions, discussions, exercises
• Dealing with uncooperative learners• Online session “production” skills
24
Training delivery tools
• PowerPoint – learn it inside out
• Virtual classroom platforms
Platform Comments
WebEx (Cisco Systems) Most popular. Several versions and payment options.
Elluminate Particularly nice interface. Free version available for conferencing with up to 3 people.
Citrix Go To Meeting /Go to Webinar
Also very popular. Cost effective for small organizations.
Microsoft Live Meeting Integration with Office 2007. 14-day Free Trial.
Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro
Bundled as part of Adobe Acrobat 9. Upload your documents to acrobat.com and open Online collaboration sessions.
