Society Changer
Me in a nutshell My name is Shirley Giraldo, and I’m a Society Changer.
I strive to change society everyday by discovering ways to increase relations amongst different groups and achieve social justice.
I have a thirst for helping students succeed in college and develop into leaders with social awareness of people that differ from themselves. I envision a world where these college graduates will go on to change society through actions based on diverse and inclusive perspectives.

The Course ------------------------------------- Life Lessons 101 mimics a college course in terms of a syllabus and teaches valuable personal skills, prepares seniors to apply and transition to college, in addition to normalizing the dorming experience for students who are unfamiliar with dorming.
Outcomes ------------------------- All 13 students applied to residential colleges. Students at residential colleges- 3. Students at local colleges- 6. Students who did not graduate- 3. Students who graduated and are not in college- 1.
The Students ----------------------- 13 graduating low-income high school seniors who are the first in their recently immigrated families to attend college, and the only ones from their graduating class applying to colleges away from home.
Impacting Others Syracuse, N.Y. National Coalition Against Domestic Violence Raised funds and made blankets with inspirational messages for victims of domestic abuse
The American Red Cross Organized a blood drive through the Multicultural Living Learning Community
Locks of Love Donated 12 inches of hair so children with cancer could have wigs made
Washington, D.C. CHCI Community Event Organized a Health and Education Fair for local residents along with thirty-three fellow interns
Boston, M.A. Greater Boston Food Bank Sorted donations to feed a family for a year
Cambridge, M.A. Food Drive Led food drive for local food pantry
Jamaica, N.Y. Caribbean Club Clothing Drive Spearheaded a clothing drive for hurricane victims in Grenada
New York, N.Y. AIDS Walk New York Raised funds for AIDS research and marched in the walk at Central Park

The Project ------------------------------------- Faces of HGSE aims to increase understanding amongst HGSE students and reduce prejudice by highlighting common assumptions that students receive as well as aspects of themselves that others do not usually expect of them.
