The history of oral surgery began from 500BC to 300 BC

The famous Greek physician HIPPOCRATES, described manually reducing dislocation of mandible , indicating the long history of discipline.

In 1575 the AMBROSE PARE ( father of surgery) published complete works. Carried information on tooth extraction and jaw fractures.

SIMON HULLIHENSIMON HULLIHEN

The earliest man to be designated as an ORAL SURGEON was SIMON.P HULLIHEN.(1810-1857)

JAMES EDMUND GARRETSON(1829-JAMES EDMUND GARRETSON(1829-18951895).

He was known as the Father of oral surgery because he named the speciality.

A treatise on the disease and the surgery of the mouth , jaws and associate parts , first published in 1869 , he helped to establish oral oral and maxillofacial surgery and maxillofacial surgery as a speciality in the dentistry.

During the second world war , OMFS emerged as one of the major specialities.

The evolution of OMFS into a speciality was aided by international strife in the first half of the century.
