About Me

With a curious nature and the determination to do well, I’ve learnt how and why to adapt my film passion to the Advertising and Marketing industries. This continuous learning and development has helped to turn my passion for film into a career in Advertising Design and Motion Graphics – something that has helped me to get a job as a Design and Marketing Officer in Cardiff.

Take a look through my portfolio to see my timeline of work, showing you where I am now and how I can help your company.

Challenge

Solution

During my time at Geolang, I have been set many challenges. The first was to design and develop the company website. After this I was to create and manage social media channels, as well as explore marketing strategies that could be used. I was also hired to create a variety of videos, including product demos, exhibition videos and video for social media content.

In order to produce industry-standard work, I took an online course, where I learnt basic html, CSS and Javascript. In order to allow for better control of the website for all members of the company, I created the website using Wordpress. I set up the company’s Facebook page and amended the existing Twitter account to fit in-line with company branding. I have also been managing and scheduling content using Hootsuite, allowing me to track the organic growth of the company over the past months. I have since taken an after effects course in my own time and learnt how to design and produce motion graphics, applying this new knowledge to GeoLang’s logo – animating it for the start of company videos. Due to the company product being a software-based product, I used screen recordings to create demo videos. I am now currently working on a company animated advert, as well as a series of cyber security interviews, which will be released in March 2017. These are in support of the social media strategies I have already set up.

PQAFilm and Television Specialist Teacher and Marketing Assistant

Challenge

Solution

As a Film and Television Teacher, my biggest challenge is to teach children between the ages of 5-18. Showing a young group how to film, the importance of industry roles, how to act in front of the camera and how film can be used is a challenge in itself. I am also responsible for the marketing of the film module for the Cardiff academy, using footage produced by my students.

Understanding the latest generation trends has helped me to communicate with my students on a personal level, whilst also helping me to choose relevant content with structuring my lessons.

As well as teaching at the academy I have recently started an Instagram page called Slo.Sam.Jae. Everyday, I upload a new slow-motion video that I have shot on my iPhone to help encourage the children to film more at home, in an amateur capacity. This has reflected in class with many asking how to achieve certain shots and why they should be used, as well as presenting footage they capture outside of the academy. I also edit together student shot footage in order to demonstrate the type of work produced at the academy, which is then used to advertise PQA as an academy across our social media channels.

Quantified AthleteLogo Design

Challenge

Solution

I was approached by Paul Walker, founder of Quantified Athlete witha brief to redesign his logo, for use on his website and potentially promotional material. Paul Walker has attended two Common Wealth games as a pole vault athlete and has now set up Quantified Athlete as a blog area for all types of athletes who wish to share their tips, ideas and stories.

To reflect Paul’s past, I wanted to incorporate a pole-vaulting feel, whilst keeping the design simplistic and modern. This led to the use of an A as the path over the Q, as well as the use of a san serif font. The use of the colour palette orange, white and black links to Paul’s previous colour theme during his time as an athlete. I also created a simple animation for the logo to use on any video material he may later produce for the Quantified Athlete marketing.

FortressCampaign Managerand Production Assistant

Challenge

Solution

For the film Fortress, I was responsible for raising the budget covering actor’s fees, crew and cast accommodation, travel expenses, props and costume hire as well as location hire and kit hire. I also was responsible for the recording of sound throughout the production of the film.

The producers for Fortress had estimated that the required budget for the short film would be around £2000. To raise the funds I set up a variety of social media channels in order to promote the film and a crowd funding campaign that I later managed. I used Kickstarter, with a goal of £2000 and created numerous, cost effective, rewards along with supporting video to inform our audience of the project we were to produce. We regularly shared the portal across our social media channels, as well as providing daily updates and behind-the-scenes content to encourage engagement. The campaign was successful and I managed to exceed the target by 10%. This extra funding was then used to submit the final fi lm to any relevant festivals after production.

Marigold CostumesProducer

Challenge

Solution

Wanting to create an advert for a local company, my crew and I approached Marigold Costumes. After a few meetings, we were set the challenge of creating an advert for Marigold‘s website and social media channels.

As producer, I had to ensure the client expectations were understood and carried out by my crew – including showcasing some of Marigold’s best costumes. I was responsible for organising shooting schedules, locations, transport of cast, crew and costumes and ensuring all appropriate kit was hired. After production I worked closely with the editor to ensure the final cut was short, effective and met the client’s expectations, which also involved multiple cuts with feedback from our client.

Drawing AprilDirector and Producer

Challenge

Solution

For drawing April, I was set the challenge of creating a realist short film. As well as directing, I also co-produced this film, which presented extra challenges in the pre-production phase. The role of producer also involved organising the advertising and marketing around the film. As director I had the challenge of casting actors who would work for expenses only.

Having lived in South Wales for most of my life, I wanted to showcase some of my most memorable landscapes. Knowing that my challenge was to create a realist film, I based the film on a couple that take a trip out of the city. The plot also sees the female character draw the landscapes to further showcase the locations chosen. I used an unconventional method of auditioning by making the actors read a poem. This was so I could see their natural smile and emotion, which would reflect well on camera. Rehearsals helped gain material to use on the film’s social media channels, which supported the marketing and advertising of the film. Detailed planning and location recces ensured the smooth running and safe production across the challenging locations.

OdiumDirector, Camera Assistant and Sound Editor

Challenge

Solution

Odium was a university project under the module of experimental film. The first challenge was to decide on how the short would be experimental. The main challenge was being able to direct and support the crew in order to create a successful short film.

I wanted to experiment with image on image, using a perspective from inside the mind of a sufferer of the Ebola virus (very topical at the time of filming). Instead of adding image on top of image in post-production, we used a projector during production, in order to play pre-captured shots on top of our scene. I worked very closely with the D.O.P to understand and achieve shots desired, as well as working with the sound team to understand the soundscapes they wanted to achieve.

As a 2:1 graduate from Newport Film School, USW, I have extensive knowledge of the film industry and have since been scouted and requested to teach as a film and television specialist for the Pauline Quirke Academy. With a passion for video, as well as commercial advertising, I decided to expand into the world of marketing.

By doing so, I have been able to learn the fundamentals of marketing including web design, graphic design and motion graphics.

GeoLang (June 2016 - Present) Design and Marketing Officer - www.geolang.com

At GeoLang, I am responsible for the design, build and management of the company website. Initially I designed this using Adobe Muse and Dreamweaver but later redesigned the site using Wordpress for easy editing by the whole team (CMS). SEO is conducted by myself to ensure the companies website achieves the highest search result possible. Video production is also a big part of this role to support any collateral or social media content. This involves demo videos, motion graphic infographics and exhibition visuals. Other responsibilities include print design, social media content creation, scheduling and management as well as blog writing.

PQA (October 2015 - Present) Specialist Film and Television Teacher - www.pqacademy.com

Teaching a vast group of children between the ages of 5-18 about how to create videos and how to act in front of camera. This involves explaining the key roles and responsibilities within film as crew members, with industry standard techniques. I am responsible for the safety of all children whilst at the academy and especially when conducting film projects. Planning, organising and briefing the principal on my lesson aims and objectives is required weekly to ensure smooth running of each hourly session. Footage shot by the children is also edited by myself and used to support the marketing of the academy across its social media channels.

Sam Jae (August 2014 - June 2016) Freelance Filmmaker - www.samjae.co.uk

As a freelance filmmaker, I specialised in directing, producing and sound (production and post-production). I directed and produced short films that involved the organising, planning and execution of the whole video. Other work included adverts for Happy Eggs and Marigold Costume, a feature film named Don’t knock twice, and charity short films Neverland and Suffering in Silence. In 2016 I was also responsible for the marketing and successful fundraising for a short film called Fortress.
