What is PRINCE2

3

PRojects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2) is a generic and structured project management method based on a wealth of experience drawn from thousands of projects undertaken in organizations around the world. Input into the method has come from many stakeholders (project managers, sponsors, project teams, industry leading experts, lecturers and consultants)

PRINCE2 is a method; a framework; an umbrella under which project management can be undertaken with efficacy. PRINCE2 provides guidance on what to do (in order to run a project) and why it should be done this way, but draws the line at prescribing how to do it. PRINCE2 is about managing projects not about doing the work

The purpose of PRINCE2 is to provide a project management method that can be applied regardless of project scale, type, organisation, geography or culture

Historical Necessity

1975: PROMPTIIProject Resource Organisation Management and Planning Techniques by Simpact System Ltd.

1979: CCTA - UK Govt. Central Computing and Telecommunication Agency adopted – PROMPTII

1989: PRINCEProject IN Controlled Environment by CCTA

1996: PRINCE2Project IN Controlled Environment 2

2009: PRINCE2Project IN Controlled Environment 2Major Revision

Developed as a response to an outcry that computer projects were overrunning on time estimated for completion and original budgets – at times double, treble or even ten-times the original estimates

CCTA adopted PROMPTII for all information systems projects which led to the development 10 years later

Published by UK Govt. agency – CCTA and became the UK standard for all govt. information system projects

An upgrade to remove rigidity and increase its application to any type & size of project within any industry or sector

A major revision – method made simpler and more easily customisable – a common request from users – new 2009 version has 7 principles not in previous versions

2014: PRINCE2Project IN Controlled Environment 2

PRINCE2 is now owned by a new company, Axelos. Axelos is joint venture between UK Government and the business outsourcer, Capita.

What does PRINCE2®offer?

The Principles - These are the guiding obligations and good practices which determine whether the project is genuinely being managed using PRINCE2. There are seven principles and unless all of them are applied, it is not a PRINCE2 project.

The Themes - These describe aspects of project management that must be addressed continually and in parallel throughout the project. The seven themes explain the specific treatment required by PRINCE2 for various Project management disciplines and why they are necessary.

The Processes - These describe a step-wise progression through the project lifecycle, from getting started to project closure. Each process provides checklists of recommended activities, products and related responsibilities.

Is a qualification Important?

PRINCE2®is internationally recognised as the “best

practice” project management approach with over 1,000,000

people qualified in the methodology –if you are not

qualified, how can you compete with those that are?

Recruiters demand evidence of your ability and will demand

PRINCE2®as a basic level qualification

A PRINCE2®qualification is evidence of your continued

professional development and your commitment to excellence

Projects are essential in delivering change and growth to

organisations. To get involved you need to demonstrate your professionalism and ability, and

a PRINCE2®qualification is a recognised and respected

qualification

Testimonials

Olawale Adeola

“Although my company already had its own project management process,

working through PRINCE2 gave me ideas for how we could improve things –not just

pointing out the bits we weren’t doing, but also telling my boss why they were important to the smooth running of the

project.”

Blessing Adeleye

“I felt empowered to change the ad hoc approach we were taking because finally I could explain why we needed

to have roles and responsibilities and a workable structure around the

project.”

Emmanuel Oludare

“By day two of the course I felt like a ‘proper’ project manager because I realised I had been

doing so much of what PRINCE2 suggests. A real boost to my

confidence.”

Tola

“After the course I could see where we were going wrong. We did not have a plan in place which would have listed the activities that needed to be undertaken and products that need to be produced to meet the deadline. We had taken dates out of the blue and published them as deadlines without much thought about complexity and the risk of achieving them..”

Bolaji

“Although I am not doing a project manager job right now, it was great to understand what's involved and where I fit into the

projects that my boss is responsible for.”

Chidima

"I hadn't realised how flexible PRINCE2 is, and that’s its OK for

smaller projects. People had told me it was bureaucratic but I think

it's straightforward.“
