Prefixes are added to the beginning of a base word. They change the meaning of the base word. I. Co (with, together) =>Co-pilot means “Assistant or second pilot” =>Co-worker means fellow worker, colleague =>Co-operate means that work together.Example: She got the goods on her co-worker after reading his e-mail.

Ex-(former, before)

=>Ex-husband means former husband=>Ex-serviceman means that one =>Ex-boyfriend mean that A man who is no longer a woman's boyfriend

Examples: her ex-boyfriend stalked her

Re-(again)

=>Re-paint means paint again, recoat with paint, cover with a new layer of paint

=>Remarry means marry again, wed another time=>Restudy means learn again; study again

Examples: If you fail these exam, you will restudy this course the same.

Inter- ( between)

=>International means between countries, involving or belonging to two or more countries, of relations between two more countries.

=>Inter-city means that between cities. Travelling between cities.

Ex: an international team of doctors urge some patients to hospital every day, in order to cure their TB

Bicycle means two-wheeled vehicle operated by pedaling.

Bimonthly means that event which occurs every two months

Ex: The magazine is published bimonthly, with six issues a year.

Counter -(in the opposite direction) Counterespionage means that espionage

intended to detect and prevent enemy espionage, secret action taken by a country to prevent another country from discovering its military, industrial or political secrets

Counterattacked means that retaliate, make a counterattack, fight back (=an attack on someone who has attacked you)

Ex: The Republicans have launched a strong counterattack against the Democrats' manifesto.

Pre -(before) Pre-school means that prior to school-age, an educational institution

for children too young for elementary school.

Pre-conscious means that fore conscious, part of the mind which exists on a deeper level than the immediate memory or conscious

• Semicircle means that half of a circle

• Semidetached means that house divided into two in order to inhabit two families

• Example: They live in a semi-detached-house.
