Plights faced by content writers- a tribute to all the world wide web writers
Content writing is one such profession which is in progress around the clock. Trust me, I know.
Well I have been a Montessori teacher for seven years and a content writer for almost three years
now. People have certain misconceptions about content writers, particularly if we work from
home.
“ Oh you are so lucky, you don’t need to travel. You sit at home and get paid. You must have
such a lot of time free time on your hands.’’ Those of you, like me, have home based free lance
writing jobs, must be used to hearing these silly one- liners on a regular basis. Well, how wrong
they are!
While content writers don’t need to travel and can certainly save on the commuting time, there is
no such thing as free time for a freelance. The invisible pressures of projects and deadlines
always hang heavy on their minds. Along with that, comes family management. Feeding the
kids, cooking, dinner and bringing the groceries are some of the household chores which need
to be taken care of, either before or after completing your articles. No one else is going to give
you a helping hand, no sir, not even your so called critics or so called well wishers.
A home based job means having a workspace, professional set up or a home office within the
residential premises from where we work. A content writer’s home office would be the room or
place where he writes his articles in peace, proofreads, edits and mails them to client. So it is not
at all a bed of roses if you think that I sit pretty at home and my bank balance increases on its
own. No way, as I wrote above, a home based business is also a business and is handled like one.
Freelance writers have more pressure than the regular nine to fivers as content writing is an
ongoing global business. I know as I have had to work on weekends or even late into the night to
complete my articles and blog posts. It is not to say that I don’t enjoy my work but the point is
emphasized to make the readers realize that life is not exactly sugar and candy for a content
writer. It is about writing in a customized manner to meet your client’s needs and trust me, it
isn’t easy.
Writing is fun only when you are doing it for a lark. But for me, my friend, writing articles from
home is my bread and butter. Sometimes articles are returned to be edited and modified which is
frustrating but then again that is the essence of being a content writer. Changing your writing
style to meet different client needs and keeping the target audience in mind isn’t easy either.
There were times when I had slog on into the wee hours of the morning, although I wanted
nothing more than to hit the sack.
Want to become a content writer? Well ask yourself if you have these skills? Are you net savvy,
proficient in English, write well, are deadline oriented and willing to work hard? Most
importantly, can you manage the occasionally odd working hours or the pressures of the content
work which may sometimes crush you? If the answer is yes after careful thoughts, welcome
aboard and good luck.
