Julian Treasure: How to speak so that people want to listen .
This is a very interesting presentation for me because I have sometimes problems with making a presentation attractive enough to follow. I’ve already got many comments of my voice which I use to much in a monotone way.
Julian Treasure starts his presentation with an amazing quote: “ the human voice, it’s the instrument we all play, it’s the most powerful sound in the world and probably it’s the only one that can start a war or say ‘ I love you ‘ and yet many people have the experience that when they speak, people don’t listen to them. How is that possible? “
He says that there are 7 aspects that we need to avoid when we are talking. It contains 7 aspects: - Gossip ( not a nice habit) - Judging- Negativity- Complaining- Excuses- Lying- Dogmatism ( having a meaning that can’t change by anything)
While giving a speech, there are 4 powerful foundations where we can stand on. Julian uses a mnemonic to explain this, it’s a kind of a memory aid.
H = HonestlyA = AuthenticityI = IntegrityL = Lover
The word ‘Hail’ also have already a great definition = greet or acclaim enthusiastically.
Then he explains that our voice is e very great instrument and that you can transform your own voice in a good way by using 6 elements.
- Register = lower voice by using the chest (fact: more votes for politicians with lower voices)- Timbre =the way your voice feels ( make sure that your voice feels warm- Prosody = talking in one note isn’t that attractive- Pace = a moment of silence can be very powerful ( e.g. after e strong statement)- Pitch = good intonation ( a question must be pronounced as a question )- volume = turn up the volume when you’re exuberant, whisper if you want extra attention
He ends with 6 warming up vocal exercises which he always do before giving a speech, if you want to know what the exercises are, you have to watch the presentation.
