N. Scientific Equipment (mainly Department of Research and Development, Sandoz Ltd.) 19931990

Designed probe for stimulated feeding in amphibians Designed, constructed, and operated a Continuous Slurry Analysis Unit: a continuous flow device thatrecorded simultaneously and automatically the adsorption of chromatic dispersants (Langmuir,

4

Isoterms), pH, [Na+], [Ca+2], [Cl-], ionic conductivity, refractive index, viscosity, and temperature of the filtered aqueous phase from a hydrating cement slurry (water-cement ratio remains constant), invention disclosure made.

1989 Operations manual written for an in-house custom-built calorimeter used to record ceramic primaryheat of hydration and secondary hydration peaks. Explained the use of custom software and operation.

19891989

Repurposed a small tabletop compressive strength machine to continuously monitor mortar initial set.Repurposed lab balance to measure shear strength of reinforcement in cement paste.

O. Equipment Design (secondary research projects, most initiated, canceled due to time constraints) 2002-2003 Experimental Laboratory Cline, initiated a series of mockups made to simulate in the lab the

genetic relationships that develops between tributary populations and the population inhabiting downstream at a river’s confluence. The setups would have used bacterial genetics in a molecular ecology model to monitor rates of recovery from induced lethal population catastrophes, CSU

1990-1991 Finishing Apparatus, measured the finishability (surface drag) of a wet concrete mix using verticaland horizontal accelerometers attached to finishing floats on motorized mount, The device wouldmake repeated sweeps over a 1.5 ft x 10 ft track filled with 3 inches of poured concrete, Sandoz Ltd.

Calorimeter, scaled up for standard 6 inch x 1 ft concrete compressive strength molds, Sandoz Ltd.Measure Corrosion by Capacitance, Fe electrodeposited on two sides of insolating film, corrosion is quantified by oxidized metal proportionally reducing the capacitance of the laminate, Sandoz Ltd.Silicate Gardens Research, used CaCl2(s) and Na2SiO4(aq) as model for cement-admixture interactions, Martin Marietta CorporationMicroware analysis of flint, collaboration of petrography lab with Cleveland Museum of Natural History using SEM, Martin Marietta CorporationCalorimeter, six medium scale samples (100 ml) on a single heat sink. Martin Marietta CorporationTouch-screen Computer Monitor (senior project), computer interfaced by screen infrared diode-detector array. Prototypical housing, chassis and wire-wrap circuitry board constructed, CSU

P. Product Research (Department of Research and Development, Sandoz Ltd., Beachwood, OH ) 1987 Proposed and evaluated a ceramic antisegregant that prevents the segregation of course aggregate in a

concrete mix. The additive was based on initiated research which correlated an admixture’s degree of polymerization and pendant functionality with concrete’s water-reduction (dispersant activity of admixture), air content, and initial set (some field tests and polymer synthesis), invention disclosure made. and data used by colleagues to write research paper.

1987 Designed a study on a product of competitor and coauthored a paper which indicated that the productwas not as effective as claimed (competitor company W. H. Grace later filed for bankruptcy in an asbestos class action suite).

1986 Proposed and evaluated epoxy-fiberglass pultruded rods (high tensile strength rods embedded inmortar) to replace iron rebar in concrete. The composite material eliminates damaging structural corrosion caused by chloride ion ingress and has a tensile strength 10x greater than steel rebar.

Q. Product Testing (Martin Marietta Corporation, Sandoz Ltd., Beachwood, OH)199019891985

Continuous Slurry Analysis Unit: Analysis of adsorptive properties of NaSCN accelerator productWiss, Jenny, and Elstner test: corrosion test used on alkyl silanes to prevent rebar corrosion HPLC analysis of degree of polymerization distribution of inhouse synthesized dispersants
