Spare Food is Share Food!

DCFA aims to stop good, in-date food produce from going to landfill. DCFA aims to share it out to those community organisations in Devon & Cornwall that help the disadvantaged either by providing meals or issuing food parcels. Hence its Strapline: Spare Food is Share Food! DCFA has just one paid, part-time member of staff as its Project Coordinator. All other helpers, including its Board of Trustees, are unpaid volunteers. Many also work or volunteer for other charitable organisations in the area, which means each of them understands all too well just how difficult it is to provide food for the disadvantaged among us. It is so sad to see food producers and retailers sending good

food to landfill sites and anaerobic digesters simply because it’s been packaged or labelled incorrectly, or whatever! Especially sad when there are so many hungry people in our

communities these days during this current economic downturn. The result of redistributing this food produce to our registered charitable organisations means that they in turn can save money. And the cash saved can be put to their own core-aims. A good result all round! DCFA does not and will not issue food directly to individuals... but only to the charitable organisations that have registered with DCFA.

A little history of DCFA: DCFA registered with Companies House in October 2010 and became a private company limited by guarantee. This was achieved with thanks to a monetary award from the Church Urban Fund which enabled DCFA to pay its legal fees and the necessary insurance premium to cover food handling, etc.. DCFA is recognised by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) as a charitable organisation for tax purposes which means it can benefit from the Gift Aid Scheme amongst other things. DCFA first started the trading in February 2011… after months of careful planning and preparation.

DCFA currently: Without any permanent premises of its own, DCFA is only able to operate on Thursday mornings at the Congress Hall on Armada Way in Plymouth City Centre. DCFA is so very grateful to the Salvation Army for their generous hospitality! Robert Wiseman Dairies, based at Pensilva in Cornwall, supplies DCFA with short-date dairy produce that would otherwise go to landfill! Our team of volunteers take delivery of this produce, sorts it, date-checks it, and then updates our databank. Then it is issue immediately to those charitable organisations that have registered with DCFA. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated team of volunteers, which started off with a group of students from the City College Plymouth. And one of our gentleman volunteers on the Produce Issuing Team is 82-years-young! By the end of October 2011, DCFA had helped to divert nearly 10,000 litres of milk from landfill which has brought smiles to faces of the ten or so charitable organisations in our region. This has saved them an expenditure of over £9,000 in just 40 weeks of trading! More savings will be made as DCFA progresses. DCFA has already been promised produce from local producers and food outlets. Exploratory meetings have been held in Exeter and Truro during 2011, where DCFA Working Groups are in the process of being set up to get things established in those areas. DCFA will make Plymouth the main Hub for the entire region of Devon and Cornwall. With permanent premises of its own DCFA could be operating on a daily basis and providing charitable organisations with so much more than just milk and cream!

The next steps for DCFA: DCFA aims to acquire warehouse-type premises or a vacant shop in the central area of Plymouth. DCFA has already started bidding for funds in order to achieve this purpose! DCFA will also need additional funds to pay for utilities, council rates, funds to set up a basic office facility, to pay for racking or shelving, food storage containers, including chillers and refrigerators. Ongoing costs will include the need to purchase display stands, print posters and leaflets and other sundry items. We will need your help!
