Week Two: Day 8 (Wednesday)First and Second Hours (7:30 – 9:30) - 2

120 minutes

• These are your last two hours on applications, resume, and cover letter. By the end, students need to have final, edited, good-as-possible copies of all 3 items completed in their Foundation Course binder. Plan a stretch break, as needed.

• Circulate, monitor, assist students, refer them to the rubric, and remind them of the time.

Job Search Skills 3

60 minutes

• In this hour, you’ll cover Job Skills 3: job survival, workers’ rights and responsibilities, and apprenticeships. Adjust your normal materials/approaches for this section to fit in the allotted time. For apprenticeships, you need to mention how apprenticeships work in the construction industry.

• Since workers’ rights and responsibilities is not always the most exciting topic for students, you might want to try covering this through a learning strategy called Jigsaw.

• Unpack the Jigsaw activity in the “Try” section within today’s lesson or link to the Jigsaw strategy to learn more.

Week Two: Day 8 (Wednesday)Third and Fourth Hours (9:40 – 11:30) - 3

60 minutes

• Today, students begin with a review of their preparation to date and then write their thank-you letter. They will practice for their interview tomorrow.

• Reviewing preparation to date: Have students meet in Work Teams to review each other’s checklist answers, particularly the answers to the questions in items #5-9. The idea is to have everyone help get each person’s answers as clear and relevant as possible.

• Writing the thank-you letter:

1. Explain the purpose of the thank-you letter.

2. Give students a copy of the thank-you letter rubric and review each part of the rubric with the whole group.

3. Have students meet with their Pair-Share partners to write their thank-you letter draft and edit it for grammar, organization, and clarity, using the rubric.

4. Have students meet as Work Teams to review each other’s drafts and make suggestions.

5. Then each student writes the final draft of their thank-you letter and places it in the binder.
