Background Checks – Is That Important For Hiring Process?

As pert study 2/3rd of organizations run criminal record check on their employees

prior to hiring process.

For some jobs like for accounting and financial responsibility, the screening should be done in compliance with the federal or

state law.

What is background check?

Background check includes the detail check of applicant's commercial, criminal and financial records.

As per studies, more than 70% of employers run a strict background check before hiring.

Why employers conduct background checks?

The reasons are different for different employers :-

First thing the employer want to check whether you are telling truth about your background or the information is tweaked.

As per studies, 40% of resumes contain false information which makes the employer to do a background check to know the truth

about the employees.

The employers want to know whether you are really graduated from the same school or did a job from the same company that

you have stated on the resume.

When the employer is hiring, he is making all the expenses on the new hire and if the employee behaves poorly then it would

be waste of money.

So to reduce or eliminate the expense, employers follow a thorough background check before hiring.

Let's know in brief :-

Negligent hiring :-

If the new hire's action hurts someone (whether emotionally, physically or financially), then the employer is

liable for it .

Terrorist act :-

As there is an issue of terrorist act or criminal records, the employers can take more precautions before hiring.

Tweaked credentials :-

As 40% employees produce fraudulent credentials and wrong information, the employers are now more worried of

accepting anyone by face-value.

And also there are corporate scams or scandals which also caused by wrong selection of new hiring.

There are millions of records where personal data are easily available so it's a good aspect for employers to study you in

personal level.

In many states, state and federal jobs require an extensive investigation on security clearances for the safety of the

federal organizations.

If the employer finds some negative things in your background checks:-

If you have any negative issues or problems in the past that you are afraid of, then make sure to explain it to the employer the

question why it won't affect the current job.

Does a criminal record or arrest record means no job?

Not necessarily, the equal employment opportunity commission(EEOC) has said the records affect differently for

different jobs.

There are different criteria to consider if the person has criminal history ::--

:- The nature of the criminal offense

:- The time gap since the conviction has attempted.

There are extensive guidelines suggested by EEOC in regards to hire persons with criminal record.

Does the background check also interviews the neighbors and friends?

Some employers also interviews your neighbors and friends to know your general reputation, mode of living etc.
