The pain point = Sleep
• Sleep is a third of our life
• But 50% of adults are not satisfied with their sleep!
– Difficulties falling asleep
– Tough wake-up & sleep inertia
– Waking up during the night
– Leading to a lack of energy and efficiency during the day
• In a context of
– Increasing levels of stress leading to sleep difficulties
– Growing awareness about the need for quality sleep
– Major advances in sleep research
– Many home equipment innovations but little in the bedroom

Sleep & the influence of light
• Light and different lighting wavelengths have an influence: – on melatonin (the ‘hormon of sleep’)
– on the body clock (circadian rhythms and metabolisms)
– this has been demonstrated in recent scientific research at Harvard Medical School and Inserm in France
• Traditional light sources (incandescent bulbs, neon & halogen) have a negative impact on sleep as they inhibit melatonin and tend to create difficulties falling asleep
• For many people, waking up with sound only (alarm clock, mobile phone, hotel wake-up call) results in strong ‘sleep inertia’ (*) which leads to high sleep dissatisfaction – The body and mind are not ‘prepared’ for waking-up
– The wake up alarm can sound in deep sleep or REM sleep stages
– Pre-wake-up progressive lighting helps reduce ‘sleep inertia’ (*) by lowering the level of melatonin in the body and taking the sleeper to lighter sleep stages at wake-up time
(*) the scientific term for feeling half-awake half-asleep after wake-up.

NightCove and Sleep 1/2
• NightCove leverages proprietary LED lighting, control and
dimming technologies focused on high efficiency of a
person’s sleep and wake-up stages
– In the evening and during falling-asleep phases
• Sleep-inducing lighting wavelengths
• Slowly-decreasing lighting levels with auto-switch-off
– In the morning and during waking-up phases
• Slowly-increasing lighting levels to ensure smooth awakening
• Melatonin-inhibiting lighting wavelengths (of light-therapy-quality blue light)
• We brand this set of proprietary lighting technologies
‘Melatonin LightingTM’
• NightCove also offers sound programs with frequencies
and patterns that correspond to circadian rhythms, relaxing
and calming in the evening and stimulating in the morning.
