Tools and Inspiration for the Modern Recruiter
You Got This!
Carmen Hudson, Principal Consultant, Recruiting Toolbox
RecruitDC Conference | Spring, 2015
How do you walk in the world?
What is your recruiting philosophy?
• WHY are you a recruiter?• WHAT do you want to do in your career?• WHO is your customer? (And what does customer
mean?)• WHEN will you make your next move?• WHERE do you want to be?• HOW will you do your job?
The Struggle is Real
I don’t want to be part of a LOL profession
• Too many reqs• Candidate volume• Not enough time• Managers don’t know what they’re doing• Candidates have high expectations• Technology is behind the times• No training/role models/expertise
The next 45 min is for reflection
I will cover some broad themes…
• Recruiting is NOT sales• Find and Attract The RIGHT Candidates• WRITE Better Email• WARM-Calling• Manage PROACTIVELY
Basic MBA Curriculum
Over time, learn to speak the language of business
• Basic principles of corporate finance• Function of Capital Markets• Financial Statements• Leadership and performance management• Marketing – product, distribution, communication and
pricing• Technology and Operations Management• Domestic and International Economy• Corporate Strategy and Innovation• Corporate Governance
What Do You Recruit For?
Or, whom do you recruit?
• No jargon, keywords• How does this position earn money for your
company, or ensure that it is possible?• What does the CEO think of this position?
Essential or a necessary evil?• What are the latest innovations or
developments in this function?
Research, visualize, talk to people
Do your homework.

Send fewer, better email
It’s about THEM, not YOU.
• Every email is personal. Well-researched. Impeccably written and edited.
• Sending mass email hurts all of us. It’s lame.• Be brief. Goal: establish a relationship.• Ask, what is the next step in your career? What would
challenge you?• You will be tempted to get it all in one email. Resist.• Host email parties – rewrite your pitch and follow up
emails monthly.
A few of my favorite things
Caution: Email automation can make you lazy!
Wisestamp – professional signature, with messaging and social media capability

Mailtrack.io tells me who has read my email. Uglymail extension tells me who’s tracking me.

ToutApp allows me to insert and track often-used attachments, insert text templates, remind myself to follow up with a phone call and more!

Assistant.to eliminates back-and-forth. Insert meeting times right from email. Recipient selects best time, and invite is created automagically!
Make the call
You could change someone’s life
• Newbie: Make one scary call every day• Old-timer: Phone a friend• Write notes. Be prepared.• Be brief. 30 seconds or less.• Say your name slowly, twice. • Stand up. Speak with confidence and
delight.
Manage Proactively
Commit to excellence
• Declare your commitment publicly. Be accountable.
• Put a stake in the ground. Set dates. Have confidence that you will be able to execute your plan or re-set expectations.
• Don’t wait until things go haywire.• Shadow. Listen in. Coach.• Share. It doesn’t have to be dog-eat-dog.
Pay it forward. Succeed. You got this.
I’ll leave you with this…
“When you’re a recruiter, every failure is like dying some small death, and every requisition is like getting a new life -- and the chance to
save someone else’s in the process. “Derek Zeller, Recruiting Daily
