BACKGROUND

Wolf Alice are a fairly new indie band who recently won a break-through act award for their amazing year. They've just recently released their highly anticipated debut album, "My Love Is Cool" so I'll be analyzing how their online presence promotes their recent release.

They first started back in 2010 where only two of the current members, Ellie and Joff were present. Starting as an acoustic duo, they felt they needed to add an electric element to their sound, so consequently leaving them to recruit two new members – Sadie and George. The premature four-piece released a four track EP called “Wolf Alice” that year. Since then the name has stuck with them, originating from the child’s short story by Angela Carter. With complications with the two new members, it left the original duo to search for some new people; Joel and Theo who are still with them currently. They immediately released a free song together on Soundcloud which gained them recognition by Huw Stephens of BBC 1 and also NME magazine. Since then, it’s took off…

My Love Is CoolFocusing on their most recently release, their album, I will be evaluating the use of promotion that influence the album’s release.

To the right is the album’s official album cover, as you can see there is no name or any photos of the band apparent. This seems like a trend for these guys not to include their faces. Although, one of their Eps does include a youthful photo of Ellie, the lead singer. What is apparent is a golden glittery photo of somebody in a vest. If you’re a fan of Wolf Alice you know glitter is one key iconography of their image, they always wear it during their live shows when fans started to imitate them.

Website

Here is their album cover dominating the screen. With the black and gold house style a recurring theme with them, the black background allows anything to stand out.

Despite having an already dedicated tab to purchase things, the band has included three buttons on the home page to immediately promote their album. On many different platforms, “itunes” “CD” and “Vinyl”.

In the center is their most latest music video for their newest single, “You’re A Germ” as you can see the blood-like red is very eye-catching. It seems consecutive for Wolf Alice to use very eye-catching colours.

Here is the band’s social media handles, following the colour scheme. This allows fans to connect with the band on almost any platform from twitter to spotify.

Here is tabs that allow you to navigate through their website, “home” “Live” “Photos” “Music” “Video “Signup” “Store”. So you can get tickets to see them tour the album, see recent music and video releases. As well as signing up to ensure you get the recent news from Wolf Alice. And finally, the store link where you can buy some merchandise to represent the band.

As you can see on their other social media platforms, their profile is fully indulged in their debut album. Both headers include the date of the release as well as it being available on iTunes.

Image creation

The image Wolf Alice are trying to achieve is an ambiguous / mystical aura rooting straight from the black void like background on their album cover. Lacking the band members, this also reinforces the ambiguity of the band - leaving you to feel curious and question: who is this band? However, with the gold, glitter drowning figure on the cover represents Wolf Alice’s playful side. Only pre-sold fans would recognise this, even new listeners could get this vibe from listening to their music.

Their target demographic are mid-teens to thirty year old indie fans, they have a very teenage innocent angst to their sound which probably reasons why they’re the most up coming band of 2015. Although, fans could be sourced from fans who support the brand of their record label, Dirty Hit Records. Sharing the likes of The 1975 and The Japanese House, they all adopt a similar sound, hence why all fans of these bands share the same interests.

Their tour photo follows their consistent black and gold style, keeping the influence of their recent album. This tour is their biggest yet, since they are touring their album. They include the tour dates and venues as well as who’s supporting them this time round. But what mostly dominates the tour poster is their logo and the photo used on their album’s front cover - easily recognisable.

More information is added at the bottom of the poster; website url and stating their album is out now. Proving their main focus is in fact, their album.

Digipak

With Wolf Alice’s digipak, they follow their consistent house-style of black gold. Their band name or title of the album doesn’t appear until you open the fold of the album. Opposite this, appears a list of writing from each member of the band, expressing their thank yous on their debut, including family members and relevant people to the production of this album - still follows the gold style. Then at the back of the album, is the tracklisting as well as their logo and also record label’s logo.
