There’s a fine line between being fun and flirty and just plain corny—or even inappropriate. Here’s how to navigate this digital land mine.

• Use emojis in a light-hearted way to keep things cute and exciting.

• Don’t use emojisduring particularly serious conversations. A sad face might be okay if someone’s car has died, but it could be seen as insincere if someone’s loved one has passed away.

• Be aware of certain emojis’ potential alternate meanings. You don’t want to end up in awkward waters trying to find out if your crush likes eggplant.

• If the timing seems right (or if you’re already a couple), don’t be afraid of the heart emoji! Even if you haven’t yet used “the L-word,” it can be a cute, low-key way to express the depth of your affection.

• Send cute pictures now and again. A snapshot of your dog doing something cute, for example.

• Likewise, don’t send any—ahem—unsolicited personal photos. It’s the quickest way to turn someone off and gain a reputation as “that guy.”

• Get to know your interest’s sense of humor. If they use a lot of flirtatious sarcasm, it’s probably safe for you to use it, too.

• Be yourself. Don’t try too hard to impress your romantic interest with trivial knowledge or discussions of your workout routine.

• Have fun! Flirting is supposed to be enjoyable for both parties involved. Flex your humor and don’t take yourself too seriously.

• If you’re just starting to talk to someone new, use texting primarily as a way to make in-person plans. Don’t be afraid to meet up in the real world!

• Don’t overthink it when asking for a date via text. Suggest something that meets shared interests and just let it come out naturally.

• Always be “one-call ready.” This means being prepared to meet with your date in style.

• Always dress to impress. Accessorize with men's jewelry that expresses your personality, like a guitar pick pendant in sterling silver with 24K gold inlay or a masculine braided deerskin bracelet.

• Don’t be pushy about text response time or the pace of your relationship. Stay calm and just let things progress naturally.

• Don’t “ghost” someone you’ve been talking to. “Ghosting” refers to simply ending communications and disappearing from a person’s life without explanation. If you’re not interested anymore, tell the person.

• Never share any information your significant other/love interest/flirtatious friend tells or sends you in confidence.
