Why recycle mobile phones? Millions of tired old phones are not recycled either because their owners are unaware of mobile phone recycling or simply because they are not convinced why they should. Here we will try to educate and convince you and hopefully after reading this post you would have sufficient reasons to not only sell your old mobiles but also be telling friends and family to do same. Mobile phones are about the most common household Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipments (WEEE) in the UK. It is estimated that there are almost 100 million phones in circulation weighing up to 12 thousand tonnes, more than 5 times the weight of the London Eye. However, only between 10 to 20 % are currently being recycled. The others will continue to lose value stored away in drawers or end up in a landfill. Apart from continuing to lose value mobiles can seriously damage the environment when they end up either in a landfill or our waterways. This is because they contain toxic substances which are released into our environment as a result of their improper disposal. Cadmium can be found in phone batteries. A single phone battery contains enough of this substance to contaminate 600 thousand litres of our drinking water when it enters the UK’s waterways. Cadmium is however being phased out in newer phone batteries.

Why recycle mobile phones?

Millions of tired old phones are not recycled either

because their owners are unaware of mobile phone

recycling or simply because they are not convinced

why they should. Here we will try to educate and

convince you and hopefully after reading this post you

would have sufficient reasons to not only sell your old mobiles but also be

telling friends and family to do same.

Mobile phones are about the most common household

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipments (WEEE)

in the UK. It is estimated that there are almost 100

million phones in circulation weighing up to 12

thousand tonnes, more than 5 times the weight of the

London Eye. However, only between 10 to 20 % are currently being recycled.

The others will continue to lose value stored away in drawers or end up in a

landfill.

Apart from continuing to lose value mobiles can seriously damage the

environment when they end up either in a landfill or our waterways. This is

because they contain toxic substances which are released into our environment

as a result of their improper disposal.

Cadmium can be found in phone batteries. A single phone battery contains

enough of this substance to contaminate 600 thousand litres of our drinking

water when it enters the UK’s waterways. Cadmium is however being phased

out in newer phone batteries.

Lead is a deadly substance which can affect the immune and nervous systems.

Lead is used to solder components in a mobile phone. It can also cause serious

damage to children’s brains.

Brominated flame retardants are used in mobile wiring boards and plastic cases.

They have been linked to cancer, liver damage as well as damage to the

neurological, immune and endocrine systems.

Beryllium can cause serious lung damage and is produced when mobile phones

are incinerated in waste plants. This toxic substance is used in phone contacts

and springs.

Are you convinced already? Our environment no

doubt suffers from the indiscriminate disposal of

old, used or unwanted mobiles. And there’s yet the
