At the IHS Forum Event, September 17-19, in Houston, TX, IHS experts Marie Fagan, Judson Jacobs, and Paul Markwell share their insights on Upstream Strategy, Technology, and Opportunity. The growth in tight oil in North America has been the game-changer of a generation. The question is now—where to, next? The experts examine the role of aboveground risk, technology and innovation, and specific opportunities available in tight oil; and we focus on one area, North Africa (Algeria, specifically) to illustrate how these elements come together.

Upstream Strategy, Technology, and Opportunity
The growth in tight oil in North America has been the game-changer of a generation. The question is now—where to, next? In this session, we examine the role of aboveground risk, technology and innovation, and specific opportunities available in tight oil; and we focus on one area, North Africa (Algeria, specifically) to illustrate how these elements come together.
Key Takeaways
North America is not unique in having tight oil. Other locations across the globe, particularly
some in North Africa, have attractive geology and could hold substantial tight oil resources.
In contrast, North America’s aboveground investment environment was and is uniquely enabling
for tight oil development.
A company will need the right mix of skills to manage the particular set of aboveground
challenges in given country.
Technological innovations drove North American tight oil production growth. Globally, each
location has its own mix of aboveground and belowground challenges.
A focus on how to bring the right technology and know-how into a new tight oil province will be
critical.
The example of Algeria illustrates that even in a location with world-class source rocks, tight oil
opportunities may face stiff competition.
We have considered the environment in our production of materials for this event.

IHS Upstream Strategies, Opportunities, and Technology and Innovation Advisory Services
Upstream Strategies Advisory Service is an integrated service combining analysis of belowground factors, geopolitics, the upstream business environment, technology, and economics to provide E&P companies with critical insight to help differentiate performance.
Upstream Opportunities Advisory Service examines global E&P locations and characterizes opportunities in terms of fit to corporate strategy.
Upstream Technology and Innovation Service (incorporating Digital Oil Field of the Future Forum) makes sense of evolving technology trends, and provides decision-makers with insight and broad business context to help make the right technology investment and deployment choices.
Why do companies subscribe to these three services?
We are unbiased. Within an E&P company, sometimes there are unconscious biases for or against types of E&P projects, or locations. We provide a necessary outside perspective on decision-making.
We challenge their thinking. We give our clients new perspectives on events and trends, to help them evaluate what fits their strategic goals and company characteristics.
