What do I Mean They Dont Teach You In LawSchool About Running A Law FirmWhat Law School Teaches Contracts Property Law Criminal Law Legal Writing and Research TortsWhat Law School DoesntTeach Entrepreneurship Marketing Accounting Networking Skills (formally anyway) Human Resource issues 4. Thing No. 1: Developing reciprocalrelationships How?- Limited time in law school, competitive environment Realization- We dont exist in silos. My piece of advice to young adults:Learn to develop and nurture relationships. Lesson: Obtaining a CRM (client relations management) system will helpautomate those relationships that are crucial to running a law firm 5. Thing No. 2: Becoming a transformationalleader How?-We are taught about RISK and EXPECTING THE WORSE so we canprepare our clients. Realization- No risk, no reward. We have to work up to being a leader (vs. aboss) most time. Lesson: Taking time each week to PLAN strategy and tactics 6. Thing No. 3: Helping Others How?- Remember hiding of books, holding on to notes, secret meetingswith the professor Realization- We succeed by helping others. Anon #Truestory Lesson: Develop a consistent referral system for other attorneys. 7. Thing No. 4: Self-Awareness & Outsourcing How?- Everyone believes we are smart and know EVERYTHING. So much sothat we start to believe it ourselves. Realization- Law degree does NOT equal M.B.A. or jack of all trades. Lesson: You cant do it all. No. 1 reason for outsourcing is so businesses canfocus on their CORE COMPETENCY, i.e. practicing law. 8. Thing No. 5: Marketing & Advertising How?- Jobs limited to a certain amount of high GPA people, only advertisingis on paper (1 page resume), the goal is to graduate Realization-If a tree falls in the middle of the forest, and no one is around tohear it, it makes a sound but who cares? No one heard it. Lesson: M & A is something that has to be strategic and consistent anddone well. 9.
