Water-reducible Intumescent Paint 02/10/13 LRC/nz

Description and use

Intumescent Paint for fire protection of metal structures, metal panels, columns and structures made up of cement, concrete floors, brick walls, etc. In case of fire, special BARRIER 87-1151 components interact at temperatures above 200°C (390°F), producing a non-flammable insulating foam that protects the surface from fire for some time, preventing the structural elements from subsiding, and allowing the fire brigade to intervene and possibly to access the blazing premises without the risk of a structural collapse. The time for which the BARRIER protects against fire is shown in minutes and represents the "Class" of the product. This varies depending on the type of surface and on the thickness of the BARRIER applied. It is recommended to protect structures indoors or not directly exposed to washing away of the rain or to high humidity such as steel or concrete industrial buildings, warehouses, canopies, cinemas, theatres, schools, hospitals, airports, underground stations, etc.

Technical data Colour :white. For technical reasons BARRIER can't be

produced in deep colours. It's possible to get it into light shades or it can be recoated to obtain the required final colour.

02/10/13 LRC/nz PAINT PRO code 1004, or with a water-thinnable type POLY ACRYL code 0004 or SUPERFIX code 0010.

Product preparation : Mix well to even colour and consistency. Application method : - airless spraying - air mix - roller - brush Reduction : BARRIER is ready to use and should be applied such it

is just to make a sufficient thickness with less possible paint layers. If necessary and according to the application method, BARRIER can be thinned down with 5 10% of water.

Application : - airless spraying: we recommend the use of a high pressure piston or diaphragm pump, gas or electric engine powered (200 250 bar). Choose self-cleaning nozzle and spraying angle according to the structure to be treated but not less than 23 (0.023 inch = 0.58 mm). The angle of the spray nozzle is very important in order to limit waste spraying. - conventional spray gun: use nozzles with large hole ∅ 2.2 2.5 mm @ 3 5 bar pressure.

Air drying time : According to the applied thickness. In ventilated place, at 25°C one coat of 600 µm wet will be recoatable after few hours and will be completely dry after approx. 24 hours.

Suggested thickness : Thickness changes depending on requested protection "Class". Thickness and relative protections (steel or concrete) are well indicated in the Test Certificate. Described thickness must be respected without exceeding, particularly in the corners where too much product can crack during drying time. Apply product in several coats. Do not apply more than 700 800 µm wet for each single coat. One single coat of 800 µm wet can be applied with airless pump and it

correspond to 550 µm dry = 1Kg/m2.

WARNING: Contact our TECHNICAL SERVICE to know the quantity of product to be applied on the structures to be treated. Certificates are issued by Afiti Licof (Spain).

In accordance with Directive 89/106/EEC on construction products, Barrier 87-1151 has been awarded the European Technical Approval (ETA) and EC mark for compliance with the provisions of ETAG 018 Guidelines - part 1 and part 2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONSERVATION AND APPLICATION OF "BARRIER" WATER-BASED 1 - During storage Because of the thixotropic features of the product, after long storage there could occur a thickening. In this case carry out a mechanical stirring by a suitable propeller drill. Avoid temperature below + 5°C (41°F), frozen product can not be used anymore. (BEWARE OF FROST). Avoid storage for long time at temperature over 25°C (77°F). 2 - During application Applying BARRIER outdoor, in open air and in several days, it is absolutely necessary to protect coated surfaces from rain and dew 'till recoating them with a water-proof paint. No caution needed if product will be applied indoor and in a dry place like cinemas, theatres, schools, garages, closed hangars, shopping centres, supermarkets, etc. 3 - After application Avoid washing away by the rain which, because of BARRIER porosity, will go through the film coat getting blisters and flaking, and also dissolving and taking off the active components, leaving the product absolutely inefficient against the fire. Also high moisture or steam will get problems time by time (for example for application in shower room, laundry, dungeon, etc.) because the dampened salts will be partially dissolved, coming up on the surface and causing, after some time, superficial crusts. In such conditions BARRIER must be always protected, overcoating it with a water-proof paint. Apply a protective water-proof coat in the properly thickness, without exceed in quantity because high thickness may stop the free foam expansion in fire conditions. At the end of the coating system, BARRIER will not be sensitive anymore to even strong sudden changes of temperature. Applied product will not loose its intumescent features,
