MEANING OF PRIDE• The other word similar with ‘pride’ is

‘arrogant’.• Pride in Arabic is تكبر • According to Imam Al-Ghazali كبر is divided

into two:

1) .means feel greater than others كبر, is when people show their feeling ,تكبر (2

through their action.

• Knowledge• Wealthy• Power

• Good deeds• Relatives

EFFECTS OF PRIDE

• Allah is very angry to those who has pride. It’s being mention in chapter 29;39-40.

• The good deeds and doa’ will be reject.(7;40)• Our heart can’t accept the guidance.• Always in astray.

THE EXAMPLES OF PRIDEIN AL-QURAN

• ‘Azazil’ becomes Iblis because of pride, he claims that he is the greater than Adam. (Al-A’raf; 12) ” طين من وخلقته نار من خلقتني منه خير أنا “قال

• Pharaoh claims to be a god because he had power to make people live or die.

• األعلى ربكم أنا ”“قال• Karun prides about his wealth. (Al-Qasas;76)

SOLUTIONS OF PRIDE

• Realize that everything comes from Allah.• Knowing and remember who is greater than

us.• Set in our mind and heart that “nobody in the

world are perfect”.• Be aware that Allah can take everything that

had been given to us.

Meaning

• Hate the ‘nikmat’ that someone had gain and hoping that it will be taken from him,

regardless it become his or not.

Law• It is illegal (haram) in Islam because it is one

of the main characteristic of the Devil.• Rasulullah May peace be upon him said:تقاطعوا ” وال تباغضوا تحاسدوا ال تدابروا وال وال

إخوانا الله عباد “ ........وكونوا“ Don’t ever hate each other, Don’t break

relationship, Don’t envy each others, and not talk each other’s, and become slaves of Allah which have ukhuwwah”

History• From the story of Abel (Habil) and Cain

(Qabil).• It begun when Adam Peace be upon him

ask Abel and Cain to marry their sisters.• It is the first murder in the history of

human.• Allah says about this story in the surah Al-

maidah, verses 27-31.

Causes According to Imam al-Ghazali, there are seven causes

and factors of Envy:

1. Hatred and feud.2. Proud.3. Haughty.4. Feeling proud (ta’ajjub).5. Wrong competition to fulfill their desire.6. Power-hunger.7. Deter to someone else.

Effects• Our faith will not be complete and perfect.• Destroy the good in ourselves.• Envy will destroy the family and society

institution.• Will become a proud person.• Our lives will not be in peace and harmony.• Will prevent the owner from doing any good

deeds.

How to prevent?• Every person must posses true knowledge

about envy and it consequences both here (in this world) and also in hereafter.

• Should have a strong effort to remove envy from the soul.

• Always remember to Allah.• Always be humble and grateful to Allah.• Always think about other people misfortune.

What is Backbiting??• Dictionary:

‘Unpleasant and unkind words that are said about someone who is not

there’.

Islam perspective“Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may

peace be upon him) as saying: Do you know what is backbiting? They (the companions) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Thereupon he (the Holy

Prophet) said: Backbiting implies your talking about your brothers in a manner which he does not like. They (the companions) were said to him: What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that failing) in my brother which I made a mention of? He said: If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have

slandered him.”

(Sahih Muslim, book 32,no. 6265)

According to Imam Nawawi: A person who talk bad about his brother whereas his brother doesn't know about it in any kind of aspect such as about himself,

characters, family, and others including trough words or signs.

(Fathul bari, chapter 46, page 576)

Law (الحكم)

• Backbiting is strictly prohibited in Islam.

• Backbiting always is compared to one eating flesh of the dead.

Causes of BackbitingAccording to Imam Ghazali:

• To fulfill our desire.• When in temper.• Desire to exalt one’s self by degrading

another.• People who attend council to vote their leader.

Permissible Backbiting

• Oppression and injustice.• Seeking assistance in changing an evil and in

returning a sinner back to what is correct.• Seeking a fatwa.• Warning and advising the Muslims against Evil.• When one openly exposes his acts of evil or his

innovation.• Defining someone.

On-backbiting non-Muslims

• Backbiting a non-Muslim is permissible like backbiting a Muslims.

• Al-Haskafi, the Hanafi jurist says about the zimmi (non-Muslim who staying in Islamic country), “Backbiting him is prohibited, just like (backbiting a Muslim).”

• The Prophet said in ‘Forty Hadith’ by Imam Nawawi: “Treat people with good character.”

Effects of backbiting• Allah S.W.T angry to those who backbiting

others.• Break up the relationship between the

Muslims.• Started a fight which can make Muslims

killing each others.• The Ummah of Islam will not enlarge.

How to prevent and overcome?

Imam Ghazali suggest a few ways how to stop backbiting, such as:

• Always realizing that backbiting is a bad deed and is one of the major sins.

• Aware and try not to blame other people.• Should be feel ashamed when backbiting

about disabilities and weaknesses of the other people.

Why Islam prohibited backbiting?

• To proof that Islam is a religion of peace and harmony.

• Backbiting will give bad impact for the Ummah.

• Prevent from any quarrelling in the society, especially Muslim's society.

Expiation of backbiting

• Commit two offenses and infringements:1. Towards Allah.2. The other one is against Allah creatures (his

brothers/sisters).

Conclusion about backbiting

• Allah says in surah Al-Humazah: “Woe to every (kind of) slanderer and back-

biter!”• On the authority of Abu Hurayrah: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say (something good), or he should keep silent.” (Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad, Tirmizi, and Ibn Majah)
