THE DESCENT: PERSONAL OPINION The Descent begins with a great tragedy. In my opinion this is a quite effect opening scene, as it delivers a horrific element into the film straight away. The director, Neil Marshall does this to grasp the viewing audience into the film straight away, this is important in my opinion as it gets the viewing audience wanting to know what is going to happen next, furthermore in much simpler context it gets the read engaged into the film. The way in which The Decent has been presented is never done before, therefore it is a completely new and original horror film. Also, The Decent is a horror film which revolves around the horror of a monster and the devastation it causes when the six girls enter eh unmapped cave system. Moreover, The Decent has been made original by the director through the aid and use of elements in the film, such as the all female cast, the crawlers and the cave system. the all female cast makes the horror film original, because there are very little films which posses an all female cast playing the main roles in the film, therefore right form the start of the film the audience can recognise the originality of the film. The cave systems make the film original and sui genris, because there are again no horror films which are set in caves and involves caves as the main setting of the film. I believe that the cave system is important as it adds a aspect of claustrophobia to the film, and makes the cave system more effective and horrific to the viewing audience. This is because the viewing audience can relate and can fell the trauma and state of panic the girls are in due to the small and tight holes, spaces and tunnels. Furthermore, the crawlers make the film original as there are not any films which possess ghoulish, Voldomort like monsters, which feast on cave explorers. The identity and appearance of the crawlers make the film more horrific, as they are not what the viewer wants to see. In The Decent, there are many green screens present. These green screens are a very important, as well as vital part of The Decent. This is because they are what makes up much of the background and adds the fine detail to make them legendary. Also, if the backgrounds were not as such, The Decent would not be as effective as it is without them, because it is the background which aid and give the horror of the film its luminescence, creepy and unordinary green glow. Also, the director has made the horror of the movies more effective by making the horror revolve around he character of Sarah. This is important because we as the viewing audience see Sarah being effected by the films horror the most, as she gets effected by

that tragedy of the car crash and then the horrific devastation of the cave scene. Therefore, we get to feel remorse for the character of Sarah, until she turns the tables and becomes the image of death in the second half of the film. In addition, the film is made into two equal halves by director Neil Marshall, thew first half being the innocence and the remorse for Sarah and the second half being here as the image of death and becoming a savage, just like the crawlers.

In conclusion, my final opinion is that The Decent is made very effective my Neil Marshall and is an effective horror film which meets its purpose of entertaining the viewing advance through the use of horror.
