Leadership as if the Future Matters
Assuming we all hope to have a
healthy economic, environmental and
social future life then lets together
design how we are and what we do
today to create that.
We are not separate.
We are one.
We are one with our past and our future.
Where are we now?
2012:
“of our 16 Board of Governors, all but 4 would leave the room if you use the “S” word.”
Many green projects, some sustainability reports,….but… its viewed as a cost.
Somehow we pretend that environmental protection is sustainability. It is only a part.

Regulation & Risk
Stakeholder Pressure: Notion that, companies are widely
perceived to be prospering at the expense of the broader
community.
Climate change: Doesn’t matter if you believe in it or not,
governments do and that means regulatory change. General
public also does, again stakeholder pressure
Risk Management: Plain and simple for many companies, act
now or get pushed out of the market
Reporting Side – Value Chain: Reporting standards changing –
GRI G4. Still voluntary, but the trend is emerging that this might
change. Again stakeholder pressure driving this
Why are companies adopting sustainability frameworks into their business models
Opportunity
Innovation: Employees are challenged to change the
way they think. Innovation has led to competitive
advantage in many scenarios. First mover advantage
Competitive Advantage: If we change our process, we
become more efficient and less wasteful
Cost of Capital: Deutsche Bank argues, from research,
the cost of capital is lower for sustainable companies.
Also increased ability to raise equity and debt

Oil and Gas
Stakeholder Pressure: Oil sands, whipping boy of mining.
Negative image hurts entire oil and gas industry
Market Access: Better environmental performance is necessary to enable Canada’s oil and gas sector to
compete globally and earn social license…
Social License to Operate: Enabler for growth. Gets
people on their side
Attracting the Best New Leaders There is a global
attraction to Canada for the best from around the
globe.

Old Business Paradigm:
quarterly reports…
short term economics on capital projects….
Corporate cultures that see people and resources only as
inputs.
“Us” vs. “them” attitudes
I don’t have time to ….
We are not responsible….
Leadership as if the Future Matters
New Paradigm:
See the bigger opportunities and challenges
Recognize the impact on our environment, our communities and our economics long term. We can no longer see ourselves as separate. We can no longer see the impacts of our corporations as separate.
Capture the opportunity of Sustainability into how we do our business every day.
These leaders and corporations will outperform those that don’t.
Those that don’t will continue to see communities, the environment and long term economic health as challenges.
