Ratan Tata One of the best known Indian

industrialists, Ratan Tata was Chairman of the Tata Group from 1962. Ratan Tata has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan, and has also been knighted by the Queen of England. Ratan Tata is considered a prolific businessman and is responsible for the spectacular success of many Tata companies.

What We Learnt Despite being the nephew of JRD Tata, Ratan

Tata started his career working in the blast furnaces and in the workshops at Jamshedpur. Taking over from JRD Tata in 1981, Rata Tata grew the Tata Group into a major multi national presence with over 114 companies.

His major achievements include the first Indian Car Nano, push into the sunrise industries –Software and Telecom , global reach-Corus,Tata Tetley & Jaguar and Range Rover.

Lessons learnt- Thinking out of the box, passion and taking risks definitely give massive results

E. Sreedharan E. Sreedharan is the chief architect

behind the metro projects in most Indian cities including Kolkata Metro and Delhi Metro. He planned and oversaw the construction of 93 tunnels within a distance of 82 kilometers in the Konkan Railways segment.

Awarded the Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan, E Sreedharan has also been awarded the Legion d’Honneur by the Government of France.

What We Learnt E Sreedharan’s life is a living example of

achievement in the face of what seems like impossible odds. When he set out to design and implement the first metro of the country in Kolkata, Sreedharan had to face insurmountable opposition by way of inimical circumstances and critics.

The Konkan Railway story is one of tunneling through soft soil and building navigable routes saving much time and cost for the people. E Sreedharan simply never gives up till he succeeds.

G R Gopinath

Formerly a commissioned officer in the Indian Army, Captain G R Gopinath revolutionized the aviation industry in India by setting up Air Deccan, the first low cost airline of the country.

His pioneering efforts won him France’s highest civilian award, the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur and many entrepreneurship awards in India.

What We Learnt When he ended his stint at the Indian

Army, G R Gopinath returned to take up agriculture. But the deep rooted desire to serve the country never really left him.

He dreamed of an India where air travel was within the means of every man and woman. G R Gopinath’s famous statement “I want every Indian to fly at least once” serves to show the vision that helped this leader pioneer low cost airlines in India.

NR Narayana Murthy NR Narayana Murthy rose from

being a software engineer from a humble background to become one of India’s leading industrialists. Co-founder of the software giant, Infosys, Narayana Murthy also served as the company’s CEO from 1981 to 2011.

Narayana Murthy has been the dominant force behind the meteoric rise of the company with leading the organization form the front.

What We Learnt Armed with an engineering degree Narayana

Murthy started Infosys in 1981 with a capital investment of INR 10,000. In Narayana Murthy’s 21 year tenure as CEO, the company has grown into an organization that reported profits worth US $1.49 billion last year.

Besides pioneering the famous Global Delivery Model, Narayana Murthy has set an example for others with his philanthropic ventures, transparency, integrity and being fair.

Lessons learnt- A Person can become successful irrespective of his background and without compromising on integrity

Mahendra Singh Dhoni India won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20,

CB Series of 2007–08, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2008 and 2010 against Australia 2–0 and 2011 World Cup. His Test, ODI record is best among all the Indian captains to date.

He also captained Chennai Super Kings to victory in the recent 2011 IPL and in the Champions League. He is now a captain of India in all three forms of the game

Dhoni has also been the recipient of many awards including the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2008 and 2009 (the first Indian player to achieve this feat), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and the Padma Shri.

What We Learnt A perfect team player who backs his players and

remains calm and cool under all circumstances. He gives credit to his players and places them in

the lime-light. He also leads from the front. He has handled admirably both the senior

marquee players like Sachin, Sourav etc. and younger players like Virat, Ashwin etc.

He takes risks, innovates and brings out the best in his players

Lessons learnt- High emotional quotient, remaining cool and calm and absorbing pressure is a great leadership quality
