Top 10 Considerations when undertaking an Energy Management Software Migration ProjectWhen setting up an energy management software platform, the migration

planning phase is vital to the success of the project and ensures that it is executed properly. Migration planning also ensures the resulting platform is useful, fit for purpose and more importantly, can start to deliver energy saving opportunities right away.

Energy ICT has a wide range of experience in delivering such migration projects and in this article, Stephen Cook, Energy ICT Project Manager, draws our attention to the Top 10 factors we should consider for an efficient, seamless energy management software platform migration process.

Top 10 Considerations when undertaking an Energy Management Software Migration Project

Energy ICT’s top 10 dos and don’ts:

• Ensure that all interested parties appoint an appropriate project manager who has the authority to ensure their actions are completed.

• Develop a project approach and project plan that is agreed by all parties before the work starts and reviewed regularly to adjust for any changes.

• Agree a communications plan to ensure progress is reviewed and any issues are identified early on and any risks identified and managed with relevant contingency plans should they be realised.

• Develop a functional scope document (FSD) stating all the aspects of the project that will be delivered. This allows for greater clarity for all parties. If the requirements of the customer change, this may have an impact on costs and timing.

• Accept that a migration of this size can sometimes have issues.

Top 10 Considerations when undertaking an Energy Management Software Migration Project

• Review all the data that has been migrated and proactively correct any erroneous data within the old system to ensure data quality in the new system.

• Patience and understanding is key. In a recent migration, we estimated that around 500,000,000 pieces of data needed to be migrated. This needs careful planning and teamwork to manage it successfully.

 • Understanding that a migration is to a new product and this is not an

upgrade. This means functionality gained BUT sometimes custom functionality is also lost.

• Ensure that you allow for holidays, absence etc and plan your resources accordingly. This applies to all parties in the plan.

• The success of the project can hinge on the quality of the testing. There will be a number of stages for testing – ensuring you have suitable people available and prepared to undertake this testing and provide suitable feedback.
