ZAYED’S LIFEDescribed as the man born in the desert, his life was the same as other people’s life; he was always with people without showing that he was sheikh and he sought to solve their problems. He had a

lot of hobbies such as camel and horse riding, poetry competitions and hunting with falcons.

BIRTHHe was born in 1918 in Al Ain, he was the youngest of his four brothers. His father was Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

ruled Al Ain in 1946, and there was a dearth of fresh water at that time. Despite these difficulties, but they were not a barrier to the beginning. The first school in Al

FIRST VISITIn 1953, Sheikh Zayed made his first visit out of the UAE with his brother Shakhbut to Britain, the United States, Switzerland, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, India, Iran, Pakistan and France. Sheikh Zayed was interested in the development that he saw in schools, hospitals and buildings. So he decided to make this improvement in the UAE.

ABU DHABI RULEROn 6 August 1966, Sheikh Zayed became ruler; he started ruling by putting goals and the first of them was change UAE to the best. He started in farms, he worked to improve the land and solve the water problems by the machines, and after a few years he turned the desert into green land.

2ND DECAt the end of 1971 Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum thought about a new idea that they called unity. On December 2, 1971 Sheikh Zayed created the

federation of the UAE with seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah.

INFRASTRUCTUREThe priorities of Sheikh Zayed were the establishment in many sectors such as schools, housing, medical services and the establishment of ports and airports, roads, and building a bridge between Abu Dhabi and the land.

MILITARY Sheikh Zayed was always saying that

development is not measured by the iron and cement, but the men. So he supported young people to join the military to defend their homeland and to show patience. Also to defend our country from foreign wars.

OCTOBER WAR 1990 A famous saying of Sheikh Zayed in

1990 in the October War, was when he said the Arab oil is not more expensive than Arab blood. He cut off oil from countries of the world.

SUCCESS And he succeeded in the

establishment of a different economy and solid resources. The high GDP of the oil sector increased from about two billion and 300 million dirhams in 1972 to 199 billion and 200 million dirhams in 2003.

HOUSING SECTOR The total spent in

the housing sector in the country was about 72 billion dirhams, including the implementation of about 42 thousand houses and more than six

thousand grants to citizens, through the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme.

EDUCATION The quality of education developed;

there is now technical industrial, commercial, and religious education; and there are also a number of universities; previously there was only one university, the University of the UAE; there were 12 universities at the beginning of 2005.

FINANCIAL AID The volume of assistance provided by

the UAE in the form of grants and loans was more than 98 billion dirhams, equivalent to 55.3 percent of GDP per year; the number of projects in various countries was 240.

SHEIKH ZAYED MOSQUE Sheikh Zayed ordered the building of

the mosque in 1996; this mosque is a large symbol for Muslims. The first prayer in this mosque was on 19 December 2007.
